Central venous bubbles and mixed venous nitrogen in goats following decompression.

Decompression of awake goats from saturation at 1, 2, and 3 ATA of air has been carried out using ultrasonic Doppler bubble detection, central venous blood inert gas measurement, and cardiac output measurement. The results of these experiments indicate that the decrease in nitrogen elimination rate as an apparent result of decompression cannot be due to excessive cardiac output or mass transport of a large amount of inert gas to the lungs as bubbles. Rather, the rapid drop in mixed venous nitrogen content is consistent with a generalized decrease in tissue-to-blood nitrogen elimination. This in turn appears to be due to a cardiovascular response to the decompression insult as was previously reported for dogs (D'Aoust et al., J. Appl. Physiol. 41: 348--355, 1976) at 1, 2, and 3 ATA; addition of ultrasonic Doppler monitoring and cardiac output in the present studies allowed measurement of the degree of latency in the appearance of bubbles at a central venous location. This time period includes that required for bubble formation, growth, and vascular transport of the bubbles to the Doppler detector. All results of these studies are consistent with the interpretation that due to a decompression insult, which probably includes bubble formation, some degree of hemostasis, and other hematologic sequelae, the transport of tissue inert gas to the capillary venous blood is retarded, thus providing the rapid apparent decrease in mixed venous blood inert gas content. These results demonstrate what is most likely a general response to a severe but not crucial decompression by the cardiovascular system.

Silastic rod pseudosheaths and tendon graft healing.

By examining the breaking strength and gap formation of tendon graft junction sites covered with pseudosheath at various times of immobilization, no significant increase was found compared to junction sites not covered by the pseudosheath. The optimum time for immobilization following tendon grafting is between 4 and 5 weeks in the chicken. Total coverage of the junction sites by pseudosheath did not affect gap formation.

Is the Vando Scale a valid measure of perceptual reactance?

A test of the validity of the Vando Scale of perceptual reactance was made by correlating Vando Scale scores with objective pain tolerance, subjective discomfort, distortion in estimation of duration of discomfort, and assertiveness. 84 college women participated in an ice water-tolerance task. Higher scores associated with less subjective discomfort, greater time distortion and reduced submissiveness. Objective tolerance was not correlated with scale scores. It was concluded that the Vando Scale has relatively low construct validity and may be very sensitive to the demand characteristics of the research situation.

Advanced digoxin toxicity in renal failure: treatment with charcoal hemoperfusion.

Glycoside toxicity, a common and potentially fatal complication among patients taking digoxin, is treated basically by managing cardiac arrythmias until the patient can excrete enough drug to decrease the intoxication. Patients with renal failure, however, are particularly difficult to manage. We describe a case of advanced digoxin toxicity in an elderly man with severe renal failure, treated with a charcoal hemoperfusion device.

Chronic renal vein thrombosis.

Twenty-eight patients with demonstrated chronic renal vein thrombosis were studied. In seven, only small venous channels were involved; in 21, both small and large veins were thrombosed. A constellation of findings occurred with such frequency in these patients that we believe it virtually diagnostic of renal venous obstruction. These findings include the nephrotic syndrome, great variability in proteinuria and glomerular filtration rate, pulmonary embolization, sterile pyuria, hematuria, hyperchloremic acidosis, decreased renal tubular threshold for glucose and increased fibrin degradation products. These findings are an indication for definitive angiographic and biopsy procedures. Prolonged anticoagulant therapy was generally very effective.

The errant spouse: a study in person perception.

College students rated protagonists of vignettes involved in extra-marital affairs in two separate studies. In the first study, where the affair resulted in the errant spouse falling in love, both the husband and wife were perceived more favorably when they cheated than when they were being cheated. The results of the second study, where the affair did not involve love, were opposite from those of the first. The cheating spouse was viewed negatively. No significant differences were found between married and unmarried subjects' perceptions. Results indicated that the motivation for an extramarital affair may be crucial in evaluation. Implications of perceived competence of the spouse were considered.

Factor specific differences in locus of control for emotionally disturbed and normal children.

The Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale for Children was given to 20 normal and 20 emotionally disturbed children to investigate the differences between the two groups on self-reported locus of control. The locus of control score and scores for each separate factor were calculated. Separate analyses of variance indicated that emotionally disturbed children did not differ from normals on overall locus of control nor on four of the five factors. However, one factor, Helplessness, differentiated the two groups with emotionally disturbed children endorsing more Helplessness items. The results are discussed in terms of factor specific methodology and in regards to the clinical relevance of Helplessness as a key factor.

Perceptual reactance and melanic density.

Following assessment of eye color, a total of 108 college students (33 males and 75 females) estimated changes in sizes of standardized blocks while blindfolded. Subjects were classfied as perceptual augmenters, moderates or reducers as a function of their overestimation, accurate estimation, or underestimation, respectively, of the sizes of the blocks. A significant interaction of gender by perceptual reactance appeared, with augmenting males being rated the most dark-eyed and augmenting females being rated the most light-eyed. Interpretation of the findings was made in terms of attention to relevant cues.

The anticipation of death by violence: a psychological profile.

College students (n = 172) completed Cattell's personality factor questionnaire, Rotter's locus of control scale, Speilberger's trait anxiety measure, and Sabatini and Kastenbaum's self-completed death certificate. Comparison of profiles for subjects anticipating sudden violent death (SVD, n = 59) with those anticipating natural death (ND, n = 113) disclosed that the SVD group was characteristically more anxious and socially isolated. A sex-by-type of death interaction occurred for locus of control, with SVD females being the most external, suggesting that this group was more likely to "give up" in response to stress. The data support Shneidman's concept of subintentioned death in disclosing that several personality factors may be associated with violent death.
