The chloroplast elongator methionine-accepting tRNA from the green alga Scenedesmus obliquus was purified and and its nucleotide sequence determined. The sequence does not bear close homology to higher-plant chloroplast tRNAMetm species, nor to the chloroplast tRNAMetm species from Euglena gracilis. This tRNA is unique among all tRNAs in having pseudouridine at position 8, and this has implications with regard to the proposed interaction of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases with their cognate tRNAs at this position. The primary sequence of the tRNA is: pG-C-C-U-G-C-U-psi-A-G-C-U-C-A-G-U-D-Gm- G-C-C-A-G-A-G-C-A-U-C-C-G-psi-psi-U-C-A-U-m2A-C-G-C-G-G-A-A-A- m7G-D-C-A-C-U-A-G-T-psi-C-G-A-A-U-C-U-A-G-U-A-G-C-A-G-G-C-A-C-C-A-OH.
Eagle first described vague orofacial pain associated with styloid elongation in 1937. Since that time, many authors have described the various clinical symptoms, radiographic features, and treatment regiments seen with Eagle's syndrome. Two cases of Eagle's syndrome treated surgically are presented in this article. Both extraoral and intraoral approaches were separately used. These two surgical approaches are critically discussed in depth. The extraoral approach is advocated. In addition, diagnostic procedures and nonsurgical treatment alternatives are discussed.

A fusion between the genes for bacteriorhodopsin and beta-galactosidase was constructed on a multicopy plasmid, pXB/Gal 101. The fusion gene, containing the bacteriorhodopsin gene fused upstream from the beta-galactosidase gene, was under the control of tandem lipoprotein and lac gene promoters. When expressed in Escherichia coli the fusion protein retained beta-galactosidase activity. Mutations in the fusion gene were produced by passage of pXB/Gal 101 through the E. coli mutator strain mut D5. Amber mutations were then selected by examining the loss of the lac+ phenotype imparted by the fusion protein to lac- E. coli cells. Amber mutations occurring within the bacteriorhodopsin gene were localized by replacing the beta-galactosidase region of each mutant plasmid with a beta-galactosidase region which was known to be unmutated. Precise localization of the mutations was achieved first by sizing the prematurely terminated peptides produced by the mutant plasmids in in vitro coupled transcription-translation reactions, and secondly by DNA sequence analysis. Six amber mutants in the gene for bacteriorhodopsin were characterized in this way. One of these was a transversion mutation at a lysine codon; the other five were all transition mutations at tryptophan codons, codons 10, 12, 80, 86, and 137 of the bacteriorhodopsin sequence.
A case of ancient neurilemoma arising in the oral soft tissues is presented. Histologic and electron microscopic studies indicate that this tumor is, indeed, a variant of the neurilemoma and that the Schwann cell is the cell of origin. At the ultrastructural level, the bulk of the lesion is composed of numerous reduplications of basal lamina accompanying thin cytoplasmic processes and thus resembles a confluence of Verocay bodies as described in previous studies of classic neurilemomas. Heretofore unreported submicroscopic calcified spherules were observed scattered through the basal lamina material.
The nucleotide sequence of the cytoplasmic 5S ribosomal RNA from Scenedesmusobliquus has been determined using post-labelling techniques. The sequence is closely related to the 5S RNA sequence of Chlorella and contains all the areas of invariant sequence which appear to be conserved in plant cytoplasmic 5S RNA species.
Chondrosarcoma of the nasal septum is a rare pathological entity. The histologic and roentgenographic features as well as the clinical presentations are diverse. Treatment of choice is a wide surgical excision, which demands a craniofacial approach. We are presenting the sixth reported case and, to our knowledge, the first one in which this surgical approach was used.
Verrucous carcinoma is a distinctive, extremely well-differentiated, slow-growing variant of the squamous cell carcinoma. Forty-nine cases of this neoplasm were gathered from the Oral Pathology Service at the Emory University School of Dentistry from 1965 to 1979. The most common site of occurrence was the buccal mucosa, followed by the mandibular alveolar ridge and gingiva. The majority of our patients were between the ages of 50 and 80 years, and most of them were Caucasians. Although most other series of oral verrucous carcinoma show a male predominance, almost 60 percent of our cases occurred in females. The role of radiation therapy in treatment of oral verrucous carcinoma is controversial, and adequate surgical excision appears to be the treatment of choice.
The chloroplast initiator tRNAfMet from the green alga Scenedesmus obliquus has been purified and its sequence shown to be p C-G-C-A-G-G-A-U-A-G-A-G-C-A-G-U-C-U-Gm-G-D-A-G-C-U-C-m2(2)G-psi-G-G-G-G-C-U-C-A -U-A-A-psi-C-C-C-A-A-U-m7G-D-C-G-C-A-G-G-T-psi-C-A-A-A-U-C-C-U-G-C-U-C-C-U-G-C-A-A-C-C-A-OH. This structure is prokaryotic in character and displays close homologies with a blue green algal initiator tRNAfMet and bean chloroplast initiator tRNAfMet.

Renal length and volume were determined with B-mode ultrasonography and manual planimetry. The accuracy of the technique was prospectively evaluated in 11 children in whom concurrent sonograms and excretory urograms were obtained. Sonographic renal volume correlated better with urographic renal volume (r = 0.89) than did sonographic and urographic renal length (r = 0.78). The technique provides rapid, noninvasive measurement of renal length and volume, and can be used to follow renal growth patterns in children.
The eighth case of sialadenoma papilliferum is reported. This benign salivary gland tumor occurs most commonly in the palate of older men. Surgical excision appears the preferable treatment; recurrence is not expected. Although the histomorphology as described by Abrams and Finck is quite distinctive, we believe that the sialadenoma papilliferum shows very different histomorphologic states according to its stage of growth.
