Children's over- and underestimation of academic competence: a longitudinal study of gender differences, depression, and anxiety.

A total of 807 third and sixth graders completed questionnaires about their academic competence, feelings of depression, and symptoms of anxiety, every 6 months for 3 years. Teachers provided objective measures of academic competence. Compared to teachers' ratings, boys overestimated and girls underestimated their academic competence. Gender differences first emerged in fourth or fifth grade and increased through eighth grade. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were negatively associated with academic overestimation. Furthermore, controlling for depression and anxiety eliminated most of the gender differences in academic over- and underestimation. Finally, self-reported depression and anxiety predicted changes in the tendency to overestimate academic competence over time. Evidence of the reverse relation was much weaker.

The development of multiple domains of child and adolescent self-concept: a cohort sequential longitudinal design.

The development of child and adolescent self-concept was examined as a function of the self-concept domain, social/developmental/educational transitions, and gender. In two overlapping age cohorts of public school students (Ns = 936 and 984), five dimensions of self-concept were evaluated every 6 months in a manner that spanned grades 3 through 11 (representing the elementary, middle, and high school years). Domains of self-concept included academic competence, physical appearance, behavioral conduct, social acceptance, and sports competence. Structural equation modeling addressed questions about the stability of individual differences over time. Multilevel modeling addressed questions about mean-level changes in self-concept over time. Significant effects emerged with regard to gender, age, dimension of self-concept, and educational transition.

Dynamics of protein recovery from process filtration systems using microporous membrane filter cartridges.

The purpose of this report is to address the concern for protein concentration recovery through membrane filter cartridges at the process scale. Filtration systems consisting of pre- and/or final membrane filter cartridges were evaluated for protein concentration recovery under typical manufacturing conditions of continuous flow and high throughput volumes. Results of the study conclusively demonstrate that consideration of the protein adsorptive properties and recovery performance of cartridge filters can provide efficient bio-burden and particulate control without compromising protein yields. Understanding the dynamics of protein recovery through various prefilter and final filter cartridges can play an important role in the proper selection of a filtration system to ensure optimal life and protein yield when filtering dilute protein solutions.

[About the different steps leading to the quality of medical information (importance of medical computing) (author's transl)].

To draw the best conclusions from a set of medical data, one must first choose correct, valid, representative and well-expressed information. So it's not sufficient to collect data, but we have to valid them before including them in the records. After having put out the general characteristics of any validation and defined the fields where they can be applied we recommend a method over three steps. First, the physician alone, then the physician with an informatician and again the physician seem concerned by the steps of control. It is particularly important to develop the validation of chronology and generally speaking of evolutive data. Of course, the costs of validation with respect to the large groups of data must be taken into account.

Analysis of selected elements in tobacco by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

A rapid method for the determination of 16 elements in tobacco by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry has been developed. The method is accurate and precise, and requires only 9 min per sample for quantitation. Sample preparation consists of placing a portion of dried, ground tobacco in a sample cup, and pressing at 25 tons pressure to make a compressed pellet. This pellet is then automatically analyzed by X-ray fluorescence for 16 elements. The results are stored on a computer disk for future recall and report generation.

Metastatic renal cell carcinoma of the parotid gland presenting as a neck mass.

Metastatic tumours in major salivary glands are uncommon, with a higher incidence of primary sites from the head and neck. Renal cell carcinoma often exhibits unusual behaviour causing both clinical and pathological confusion. Renal cell carcinoma initially presenting as a metastatic swelling in the parotid gland or elsewhere in the head and neck is rare. We report a case of renal cell carcinoma metastatic to the parotid gland where the neck swelling was the first sign of the tumour, with a comprehensive review of the literature.
