One- and two-electron reduction of hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinones and hydroxy-9,10-anthraquinones. The role of internal hydrogen bonding and its bearing on the redox chemistry of the anthracycline antitumour quinones.

First and second half-wave reduction potentials of 11 1,4-naphthoquinones and 42 9,10-anthraquinones have been measured for solutions in dimethylformamide. The presence of hydroxy groups at the 5- and 8-positions of the 1,4-naphthoquinone nucleus, and at the 1-, 4-, 5- and 8-positions of the 9,10-anthraquinone (the alpha-positions) markedly raises both reduction potentials. Measurements on the corresponding methoxy- and acetoxyquinones indicate that internal hydrogen bonding in the alpha-hydroxyquinones makes a major contribution to stabilisation of the semiquinone, probably as a result of increased delocalisation due to exchange of the hydroxy hydrogen between the two neighbouring oxygen atoms. The bearing of this phenomenon on the mechanism of action of anthracycline antitumour quinones is discussed, and the stabilising effect on the semiquinone of hydroxy groups at the 1- and 5-positions of the 9,10-anthraquinone nucleus is highlighted.

One-electron reduction of adriamycin: properties of the semiquinone.

Pulse radiolysis of aqueous solutions containing adriamycin and redox indicators of known one-electron reduction potential (E1) shows that its E1 at pH 7 is -328 mV (vs NHE). The variation E1 with pH in the range 6-12 shows that the net charge on the semiquinone at pH 7 is zero. As well as the pKa values of 2.9 and greater than or equal to 14 established independently, the semiquinone has a pKa close to 9.2. The new data enable the structure and likely reactivity of the semiquinone to be specified.

Distance education: a learner-centered paradigm.

OBJECTIVE: To describe distance education and present an overview of current and future applications of the technologies used. DATA SOURCES: Current literature and the authors' experience. STUDY SELECTION: Determined by the authors. DATA EXTRACTION: Determined by the authors. DATA SYNTHESIS: Distance education is characterized by the physical separation of the learner and the instructor during instruction. Instructors and learners shift roles; the method and the technology combine to create a learner-centered paradigm. CONCLUSION: With improved technology and the increased demand for professional training, distance education promises to become a part of the mainstream of education.

A new paradigm for clinical laboratory science education: a case study for survival and growth.

Clinical laboratory science (CLS) education programs are faced with declining numbers of qualified students and resources. A solution is to move toward a new education paradigm. The new paradigm emphasizes cooperation between institutions, asynchronized learning and advising, the use of technology for teaching and advising and the decentralization of the teaching process. This article presents a case study describing how 1 CLS program was able to go from a scarcity mentality to an abundance mentality by implementing the new paradigm.
