The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of an obstetrician-based cord blood collection system for the purpose of banking cord blood for unrelated donor hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Over 200 delivering physicians and 40 area obstetrical units were educated and became involved in the collection of cord blood during the third stage of labor. These products compared favorable with those obtained after placental delivery. Issues involved in the development of quality assurance for unrelated donor banking are discussed. An obstetrician-based cord blood collection network is feasible and advantageous in that cord blood can be collected from a wider variety of communities, thus enhancing the ethnic diversity of a bank.

The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimal Bacteriocidal Concentration (MBC) of 19 antimicrobials on 16 isolates of D. congolensis were determined. The potential field efficacy of the agents was evaluated by comparing the results with serum levels of drug unbound to proteins and the in vitro and in vivo findings of other authors. A modified standard microtechnique was used for serial dilution-antimicrobial sensitivity and found to be easy and reproducible. Erythromycin, spiramycin, penicillin G, ampicillin, chloramphenicol, the streptomycin, amoxicillin, the tetracyclines and novobiocin had high serum concentrations in comparison with their MBCs and were shown to have potential use for the treatment of dermatophilosis.
An outbreak of W135 meningococcal disease occurred in the spring of 2000 among pilgrims returning from Saudi Arabia and their contacts. Clinical isolates from England and France were examined and compared with reference strains from other countries. Characterisation of isolates by a range of typing methods showed them to be of clonal origin (ET-37) and closely related to other meningococci with an established propensity to cause disease clusters. A reappraisal of vaccination strategies for travellers is required.
In this paper, we examine the association between polymorphisms of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and muscle-specific creatine kinase (CKMM) genes, and the actual performance status observed in professional cyclists capable of completing a classic tour stage race such as the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, or Vuelta a España. To accomplish this, we compared the frequencies of the ACE and CKMM genotypes/alleles in 50 top-level Spanish professional cyclists that have completed at least one of these events to 119 sedentary controls, and 27 elite (Olympic-class) Spanish runners. The genetic polymorphism at the CK-MM locus was detected with the NcoI restriction endonuclease. The results of our study showed that the proportion of the DD genotype was higher in cyclists (50.0 %) than in the other two groups (p<0.05), the proportion of the ID genotype was higher in controls (46.2 %) than in the other two groups (p<0.05), and the proportion of the II genotype was higher in runners (40.7 %) than in the other two groups (p<0.05). The proportion of the D allele was higher in both cyclists (65.0 %) and controls (57.6 %) than in runners (46.3 %) (p<0.001), whereas the proportion of the I allele was higher in runners than in the other two groups (p<0.001). No statistical differences were found for CKK-MM- NcoI. We conclude that in top-level professional cyclists capable of completing a classic 3-wk tour race, the frequency distribution of the D allele and the DD genotype seems to be higher than in other endurance athletes such as elite runners (in whom the I allele is especially frequent).
Most studies from Argentina have focused on toxocariasis as an environmental problem of big cities, and there are no available data about children infection from small or middle-sized cities. In order to assess the prevalence of anti-Toxocara antibodies in infantile population, 206 children from Resistencia, of both sexes, aged 1-14 years old were studied by Elisa testing with E/S T. canis L2 antigens. Hematological parameters and immunoglobulin levels were determined; five days' stool samples were studied and epidemiological data were obtained by means of a questionnaire to parents. Results showed that 73% of the children had one or more dogs living at home, 57% reported geophagia and 37.9% were positive for Toxocara serology, but there was no significant difference in prevalence neither for boys and girls, nor concerning age. An increased risk of infection was observed in age groups 5-6 and 7-8 for boys, and in age groups 3-4 and 5-6 for girls.
Developing T cells diverge to several different effector classes, identified by their ability to express different set of genes. Aside from the genes encoding components of the TCR/CD3, there are many others that are activated and/or inactivated during T-cell development, but the functions of most of them are not yet defined. Despite the significant progress made, several fundamental aspects of the major steps of T-cell differentiation remains unclear. Thus, while long ago it was realized that the thymus is a central organ for the development of functionally competent T lymphocytes, it appears clear today that ectopic T-cell differentiation can also take place. In this article we review some of the molecules implicated in T-cell development and discuss some of the pathways that lead to mature T cells from precursors, both intra- and extra-thymically, as well as their implications in the acquisition of self tolerance.

Virulence of the five genomic groups of Listeria monocytogenes (sensu lato) was tested toward mice by determination of LD50 and growth or survival kinetics in vivo. Virulent strains included L. monocytogenes (sensu lato) (genomic group 1) and "L. bulgarica" (genomic group 2). The three other genomic groups, "L. innocua", "L. welshimeri" and "L. seeligeri", were apathogenic and avirulent under these experimental conditions.

In this multicenter prospective study, the results achieved with the use of Brånemark implants for single tooth replacement were evaluated. The overall cumulative success rate was 95.9% for implants and 91.1% for crowns. Two of the 99 implants placed had to be removed before the prosthodontic stage of treatment; thus, 97 were restored with CeraOne crowns. Seventy-seven implants were evaluated radiographically at the 1-year follow-up, 57 at 3 years, and 47 at 5 years. Mean marginal bone resorption was well within the limits set by Albrektsson et al in 1986. The status of the soft tissue around crowns and adjacent teeth remained stable over the evaluation period. The gold abutment screw in the CeraOne system seems to have eliminated the problem of loosening abutment screws in single tooth replacements. The results suggest that the Brånemark system can be safely used for tissue-integrated replacement of single teeth.
Although most of Yersinia enterocolitica strains isolated from man have no pathogenicity for laboratory animals, it has been demonstrated that some strains are pathogenic for conventional mice and that most of the strains are probably pathogenic for Nude mice. The authors report the results of the infection of germ-free mice with a strain of Y. enterocolitica which is non pathogenic for holoxenic mice. It appears that C3H/He mice are sensitive to the infection by gavage or aerogenic and peritoneal routes. They all die within 8 to 12 days after injection of an inoculum of 5.10(5) viable cells. Germ-free NCS mice were also sensitive to the oral and aerogenic infection but not to the peritoneal infection; the difference between C3H/He and NCS sensitivity to this way of infection could be explained by a higher bactericidal activity of the peritoneal phagocytes of the latter. The C3H/He and NCS holoxenic control mice infected with the same inoculum of the same strain, did not show any symptoms and all attempts to isolate Y. enterocolitica failed three months after the challenge. Germ-free mice killed by the infection showed histopathological findings, i.e. abscesses involving intestinal wall. liver and spleen; they were similar to those described in experiments with pathogenic strains for conventional mice (holoxenic) and to those observed in infection of athymic Nude mice with strains non pathogenic for conventional mice. This infectious disease model is discussed in regards to the natural human infection.
Epidemiological characteristics of dermatophytoses in the metropolitan area of Resistencia city are described. Hair fragments, skin, scalp or nail scrapings were collected from 3.507 persons with dermatological symptoms of probable fungal origin. The mycological studies were performed by three mycological laboratories, one from a university Institute and two from private laboratories. Direct microscopic examinations showed fungi in 39.66% of samples, while the recovering of dermatophytes from cultures was 40.66%. Microsporum canis was the most prevalent species among dermatophytes, isolated in 217 samples (41.73% of cultures) while Trichophyton rubrum, Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum gypseum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes were present in 38.46%, 6.35%, 5.58% and 4.81%, respectively. Microsporum and Trichophyton genus were clearly predominant over Epidermophyton. Variations in prevalences of fungal genus from different places of the world probably reflect the existence of particular environmental situations defined by biotic and abiotic factors that influence the settlement of endemic mycoses.
