Relative deprivation and perception of financial adequacy among the aged.

This paper presents a conceptual framework that incorporates the notion of relative deprivation to explain the perceived financial adequacy among the elderly. The model not only provides a more heuristic interpretation of older people's financial satisfaction but also further clarifies the role of actual income. The relative deprivation model was evaluated by using data from the General Social Survey conducted by the National Opinion Research Ctr. from 1972 through 1977. The findings support the predictions derived from the model and were replicated with high consistency across these six data sets. According to the findings, financial satisfaction is directly related to relative deprivation while income only indirectly affects one's sense of financial well-being. Social status, income, and labor force participation have been demonstrated to be either directly or indirectly related to feelings of deprivation.

Detection and deletion of motion artifacts in electrogastrogram using feature analysis and neural networks.

Electrogastrogram is a surface measurement of gastric myoelectrical activity, and electrogastrography has been an attractive method for physiological and pathophysiological studies of the stomach due to its noninvasive nature. Motion artifacts, however, ruin the electrogastrogram (EGG), and make the analysis very difficult and sometimes even impossible. They must be eliminated from EGG signals before analysis. Up to now, this can only be done by visual inspection, which is not only time-consuming but also subjective. In this study, a method using feature analysis and neural networks has been developed to realize automatic detection and elimination of the motion artifacts in EGG recordings by computer. Experiments were conducted to investigate the characteristics of different motion artifacts. Useful features were extracted, and different combinations of the features used as the input of the neural network were compared to obtain the optimal performance for the detection of motion artifacts using the artificial neural network.

Sex, marital status, and psychological distress in later life: a comparative analysis.

Some investigators maintain that while married men experience less distress than married women, the opposite may be true for those who are not married. In this instance, women are thought to report fewer symptoms of distress than men. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among gender, marital status, psychological distress and alcohol use in five culturally-diverse groups of older adults: U.S. whites, U.S. blacks, Japanese, Taiwanese and elderly people in the People's Republic of China. We find little evidence of the pattern described above. Instead, the data suggest that being single is equally detrimental for older men and women regardless of the cultural setting.

Calorimetric and ionimetric dosimetry intercomparisons I: U.S. neutron radiotherapy centers.

In the U.S. neutron radiotherapy trial centers, absorbed dose is routinely measured using commercially available A-150 tissue equivalent (TE) plastic ionization chambers. The collecting volumes of these chambers are filled with either methane-based tissue equivalent gas or air. Absorbed dose in A-150 plastic, determined with these ionization chambers, was compared to that measured by an A-150 plastic calorimeter in an A-150 plastic phantom. These comparisons have yielded the following information: (1) Agreement of the total absorbed dose measured using the ionization chambers was within 2.5% of the calorimeter at all the centers visited to date. (2) For all the neutron fields measured, the product of the stopping power ratio (sw,g)N' between the A-150 plastic chamber wall and TE gas, and the average energy expended in the gas per ion pair formed, WN/e, was computed assuming Bragg-Gray theory and found to be 31.0 +/- 0.7 J/C. (3) The displacement correction factor employed to normalize measurements at a depth in a phantom using the type IC-17 ionization chamber was verified to be approximately 0.97 +/- 0.01.

[Molecular cloning and characterization of a novel WRKY gene from Brassica chinensis].

A new WRKY gene was cloned from Brassica chinensis by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The full-length cDNA of BcWRKY was 1175 bp long and contained a 924 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a putative W-box-binding protein of 308 amino acids. The predicted BcWRKY protein was found to have a potential bipartite nuclear localization sequence (NLS-BP) in its N-terminal region followed by a WRKY DNA-binding domain. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that BcWRKY resembled other WRKY domain-containing proteins from Arabidopsis (AtWRKY18), tobacco (WIZZ), parsley (PcWRKY4) and wild oat (ABF2). Expression of the BcWRKY gene could be induced by salicylic acid (SA), and influenced by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato strain DC3000 infection and wounding treatment. Our study implies that BcWRKY might have similar functions possessed by other WRKY genes such as inducing the expression of some defense-related genes and increasing plant's disease resistance ability.

Analysis of the impact of mother-daughter relationships on the commitment to caregiving.

Path analysis was used to test a model to examine the impact of mother-daughter relationships on the commitment to caregiving by 98 adult daughters during the first three months. Findings generally supported the model. Although significant, magnitude of mothers' limitations did not solely explain commitment, either instrumental or affective. Mother-daughter relationships were powerful predictors of commitment, especially affective commitment. Although predicted, employment status did not function as a mediator in this model, while living arrangements did.

Refined exposure assessment for ingestion of tapwater contaminated with hexavalent chromium: consideration of exogenous and endogenous reducing agents.

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine how rapidly and completely chromium (VI) [Cr(VI)] is reduced upon contact with common beverages mixed with tapwater. Studies were performed for five common beverages (coffee, tea, orange juice, Kool Aid, and powdered lemonade) spiked with either 10 or 50 mg Cr(VI)/l. The concentrations of Cr(VI) were measured at several time intervals for up to four hours. It was demonstrated that each of these beverages had the capacity to reduce a concentration of > or = 8 mg Cr(VI)/l within a 15-minute time frame, and that continued monitoring of the beverages revealed greater reduction of the Cr(VI). These findings are consistent with the observation that many foods and beverages, as well as endogenous body fluids such as saliva and gastric juices, are capable of reducing substantial quantities of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Our exposure assessment shows that the estimated high-end ingested dose of Cr(VI) from tapwater at both 1 and 5 mg Cr(VI)/l is generally two to three orders of magnitude below doses shown to have no adverse health effect in animal studies. When considered in conjunction with studies demonstrating that the reductive capacity of gastric juices may exceed 50 mg Cr(VI) daily, these observations suggest that little or no Cr(VI) is likely to be absorbed orally at a reasonable water concentration of Cr(VI), since tapwater is bright yellow at 5 mg Cr(VI)/l.
