Peroxidase activity as a marker for estrogenicity: studies in uterus and mammary tumors.

We examined the possibility that peroxidase activity might be a marker for estrogen activity in established estrogen-dependent tissues: dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced rat mammary tumors and human breast cancer. In DMBA-induced tumors undergoing regression after ovariectomy or tamoxifen treatment, tumor size decreased by 50%, estradiol receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PgR) decreased by 25 and 20%, respectively, but peroxidase activity paradoxically increased six- to sevenfold. In DMBA tumors stimulated by estradiol treatment or by the cessation of tamoxifen administration in intact rats, tumor size increased threefold. ER and PgR increased two- and threefold, respectively, while peroxidase activity decreased 50%. These data indicate an inverse relation between tumor growth, ER and PgR on the one hand, and peroxidase activity on the other. In the human breast cancers there was a significant negative relation between the presence of ER and peroxidase activity. By using a calibrated Sephadex G-100 column it was shown that uterine peroxidase differs in molecular weight from the peroxidase of rat mammary tumors and that of human breast cancer.

The uncovering of projective identification in the treatment of the borderline adolescent.

This paper illustrates a clinical finding from intensive family and individual therapy with borderline adolescents: The properly handled uncovering of projective identification leads to the building of parental empathy, and allows for the reopening of emotional growth for the adolescent and his parents. Projective identification is defined and applied in the context of intensive therapy, and its place is established as a link between interpersonal family relations and intrapsychic structure. The process of the uncovering of a specific object-relations conflict which had been defended by projective identification is illustrated by excerpts from the treatment situation.

[The child exposed to the human immunodeficiency virus].

The care of the child exposed to human immunodeficiency virus extends beyond the treatment of the medical complications of the illness. It begins during the pregnancy by an individualised decision regarding the indication of a prophylactic intervention to reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of the virus, includes after delivery the attempt of early diagnosis of the vertical transmission and offers, during each of these circumstances, counselling and social support. A multidisciplinary team, associating pediatricians, nurses, social workers and psychologists, a close collaboration with obstetricians and internists, as well as the access to an expert laboratory are the keys to answer the challenges of this disease.

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome↗

[Epidemiology of lower respiratory tract infections in children].

Lower respiratory tract infections--croup, tracheo-bronchitis, bronchiolitis and pneumonia--represent one of the major causes of pediatric consultation. They occur most frequently during the first years of life, are usually not recurrent and require hospitalization in less than 2% of the cases. They are associated in time with epidemics of respiratory virus and Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections, but the role of bacteria as primary infectious agents, or as causes of superinfection is significant.

Bacterial Infections↗

[Cholestasis in pregnancy].

It has been possible by seeing twenty cases of cholestasis in pregnancy to define certain characteristics of the condition. This pathology of pregnancy is frequently associated with twin pregnancy. The prognosis for the fetus is especially affected by prematurity. There is no evidence of small-for-dates babies, but the neonate gains weight slowly. Anaemia and jaundice in the neonates are common. The treatment of threatened premature labour using beta-mimetic drug is useful and of no danger to the mother.
