[Acid-base equilibrium during acute fetal hypoxia. Experimental study].

The authors studied the effects of acute hypoxia of short duration in eight pregnant ewes that had been anaesthetised. They showed that during the experiment the E.E.G. as well as the pH and pCO and the maternal lactate levels were not changed and that therefore changes that can be found in the fetus are due solely to its own hypoxia and not due to transmission from the mother. In the fetus the trace flattens in about 30 minutes on an average. After this interval a moderate drop in pH occurs at the same time as an increase in lactacidemia and the relationship between lactate and pyruvate. The heart rate is changed in a variable manner: it accelerates if the basal rate is less than 180 beats a minute and slows if it is above 180. Blood pressure rises. Changes in the cardio-vascular system always precede those in the electroencephalograms.

[Ultrastructural and histochemical study of the zones of the junctions of luteal cells in women. Functional significance].

We are reporting here the results of an electron microscopic study of the junction between cells which have been seen in corpora lutea in human beings between the 20th and 27th days of the cycle. Conventional electron microscopic techniques, using tracers (plotters) for the extracellular spaces as well as Thiery's histochemical technique, were used. Two principal types of junctions between the cells have been described: tight junctions and septate junctions. A discussion takes place about the different histophysiological problems which presented (LH hormone receptors and intercellular diffusion of the message).

[Attempt at a standardized interpretation of testicular histopathology in male sterility].

The authors present a standard for interpreting the histopathology of testicular biopsies carried out during the framework of investigation of male sterility. The standard is based on a study of the alterations in the seminiferous tubes (T), the peritubular membranes (M) and the interstitial tissue (I). This method of histological assessment has been used to study 35 subjects on whom bilateral bipolar biopsies were carried out (130 specimens). The statistical study showed: a) the absence of any difference between the pieces taken from the two poles in each testis; b) the level of concentration of spermatozoa could not be tied up with any of the three histological parameters. This applied also for hormone levels with the exception of GUT which seem to correlate directly with M; c) the presence of a varicocoele does not reflect in any way the membrane or the interstitial tissue; d) spermograms carried out after the biopsies showed that testicular biopsy does not cause permanent trauma to the testis. The advantages and disadvantages of this quantitative method are discussed.
