A method for transition smoothing of sleep--waking states.

A method was developed for sequential redistribution of short-duration sleep--waking states into the long-duration behavioral state(s) that surrounds these intervals. This methodological approach is useful in determination of general sleep--waking patterns such as state durations, interstate intervals, and sleep--waking cycles. The redistribution sequences had no effect on total amount of sleep or waking categories, but did decrease stage 1 with successive redistribution steps. Examination of the slope of the curve (number of occurrences or mean epoch duration divided by successive redistributions) can be used to determine the appropriate "smoothing" for electroencephalogram (EEG) state data via location of the breakpoint in the curve. The low-pass redistribution technique has been particularly useful for smoothing large volumes of EEG state data for subsequent analyses without significantly changing the various sleep-waking states.

Some correlates of language deterioration in severely and profoundly retarded long-term institutionalized residents.

Progress or deterioration in language use was observed in two samples of retarded institutionalized residents. One sample was observed twice, and the other three times, at 5-year intervals. We coded change in language use as noncommunicating, regressed irregular, stable, or progressed. Change in language use was found to be related to two indicators of intellectual capacity. Central nervous system involvement may play a part in irregular or totally absent communication. Institutional policies regarding transfer of residents also affect the apparent language deficit in longer-term residents.

Test of a model of decision processes in an intense conflict situation.

A particularly intense form of conflict. It is a situation in which at most one of some set of participants may obtain an objective and in which it is possible that none will obtain their objective. A mathematical model is derived from basic assumptions about the decision making process in a three-person uelative conflict situation, a truel. It is proposed that the model is generalizable to n-person situations. A preliminary test of the model that varied only one of the parameters revealed support for the model. More extensive tests of the model are warranted. In addition, the applicability of the model to internation or intergroup conflict is explored.

Zinc uptake in normal and leukemic lymphocytes: effect of poly-L-ornithine.

Phytohemagglutinin and poly-L-ornithine were tested for their ability to stimulate uptake of transferrin-bound zinc by lymphocytes from both normal donors and donors with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The ratio of zinc uptake in poly-L-ornithine cultures to zinc uptake in phytohemagglutinin cultures was 0.9 +/- 0.3 for leukemic lymphocytes and 1.9 +/- 0.2 for normal lymphocytes. Results indicated that this technique may be useful in the diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia as well as in the assessment of the efficacy of chemotherapeutic regimens.

Effect of zinc administration on the growth of L1210 and BW5147 tumors in mice.

Aqueous zinc acetate injected ip prevented tumor growth in 50-70% of BDF male mice previously inoculated ip with L1210 leukemia cells. However, aqueous zinc acetate injected sc did not prevent tumor growth in AKR/J mice inoculated im with BW5147 lymphatic leukemia cells. In the latter mice, only a small but statistically significant increase in mean survival was noted.

The interaction between anthelmintic drugs and histamine in Ascaris suum.

1 Piperazine reduced the histamine content of Ascaris suum, yet it greatly increased the uptake of histamine from the surrounding medium, the neuromuscular structures of the nematode preferentially increasing in amount. 2 Bephenium reduced the histamine content of Ascaris and the uptake of histamine from the surrounding medium. However, the relative amount in the neuromuscular structures increased. 3 The flaccid paralysing action of piperazine may thus involve increased histamine absorption whereas the spastic paralysing action of bephenium may be independent of histamine.

Social adjustment in more severely retarded, institutionalized individuals: the sum of adjusted behavior.

A measure which is used to count kinds of social behavior in more severely mentally retarded residents was described in this study. The measure is an aggregate or sum, and it is referred to as the Sum of Adjusted Behavior. In this study, we determined measures of social adjustment which are useful for obtaining population parameters. Data concerning the relationship between the Sum of Adjusted Behavior and CA to MA, age at time of institutionalization, gender, medical diagnosis, medication, and social behavior were discussed. The relationships between adjustment and adaptive behavior were also defined on the basis of the findings.
