Fat-laden macrophages in cerebrospinal fluid as an indication of brain damage in children.

A study of the incidence of fat-laden cells (compound granular corpuscles) in the cerebrospinal fluid in infants indicating that a high level of these cells (over 40% of cells) is invariably associated with a bad prognosis and lower levels of these cells can give a useful indication of brain damage in children with meningitis and ventriculitis.

Brain Damage, Chronic↗

The neurological junction between the appendix and ascending colon.

The junction between gut wall having the intramural plexus distribution characteristic of large bowel and that of appendix does not occur at the anatomical junction of the caecum and the appendix but at a level proximal to this and just distal to the ileocaecal valve.

Appendix↗

The connective tissue in livers of children.

The amount of connective tissue present, relative to the amount of parenchymal tissue, has been assessed in a random series of 200 livers from children dying from non-hepatic disease. The amount of connective tissue in the left liver is approximately twice that in the right liver. The connective tissue in both lobes progressively diminishes during childhood but at all times remains higher than that in adults.Increased amounts of connective tissue in the liver in children is probably non-specific and related to the degree and duration of shock and hypoxia in the immediate postnatal period.
