Short-duration ('minutes') therapy with dithranol for psoriasis: a new out-patient regimen.

Eighty-five patients with widespread psoriasis were treated with daily short-term applications of dithranol and salicylic acid in yellow soft paraffin. Two different schedules were used: (1) '3-h' therapy using increasing dithranol concentrations (o.I, o.25, o.5, I, 2%) for 3 h; (2) 'minutes' therapy using high dithranol concentrations (I, 2, 3%) for only 10-20 min. In comparison with the standard dithranol therapy, applied for 24 h each day, the '3-h' therapy showed equal efficacy clinically and histologically, and the 'minutes' therapy was significantly better than the standard therapy, reducing the mean clearing time by 6.8 days. Daily short-term ('minutes') therapy combines all the advantages of dithranol with a convenient and readily acceptable mode of application for home use.

[A very promising treatment method in psoriasis. Short-term anthralin therapy].

UNLABELLED: New found knowledge concerning the penetration kinetics of anthralin induced us to modify the treatment of psoriasis. The new method was compared in a right-left test with the classical anthralin therapy in 9 patients. After that the entire body was treated with the short-term therapy on 45 patients with severe psoriasis. METHOD: once a day 1%-anthralin-5%-salicylic acid vaseline was rubbed over all parts of the skin and after 10 minutes washed off thoroughly. Within a few days the dosage was increased up to 3% anthralin and the application time up to 20 minutes if possible. The treatment was continued on the level according to the individual tolerance. With the new method there was an earlier healing process and the time of treatment was therefore shortened. Moreover after a few days of hospitalization it was possible to continue the treatment at home with cooperative patients, able to go on with their work. Short-time anthralin therapy seems to optimate the classical method.

Telethermography in the diagnostics and management of malignant melanomas.

Telethermography is a harmless, noninvasive method of examining some patients for some conditions. There are more important differential criteria than thermography for the diagnosis of malignant melanomas, but in some cases the proof of a surrounding difference in temperature may make a contribution to the diagnosis of malignant melanoma, especially if it gives decisive information as to the otherwise clinically inapparent extent of the malignancy locally, and thus guides the surgeon to excise widely enough. Also, thermography of the whole body is complementary to established techniques of examination used in evaluation of patients with malignant melanomas. By making visible hypo- or hyperthermic areas, it helps to detect metastases and confirms or denies suspicious findings obtained by other methods of examination.

[Comparison of the efficiency of the Soviet culture medium no. 3 and the media used for cultivation of mycobacteria in routine in the GDR (author's transl)].

In cooperation of ten laboratories the Soviet culture medium Mo. 3 (FINN) was compared with the media used in the GDR for primary cultivation of mycobacteria in routine (German Pharmacopoeia (diagnostic laboratory methods) GDR). The efficiency of the media tested in the study was nearly the same, not only concerning the number of positive cultures but also in time of growth and the number of colonies.

Further similarities between Sézary syndrome and mycosis fungoides.

Sézary syndrome and mycosis fungoides, both malignant Non-Hodgkin lymphomas, although characterized as specific entities, show a close relationship. This is based on striking similarities not only uith respect to morphological, cytophotometrical, cytogenetical and immunological findings, but also with respect to a typical common reaction pattern to photochemotherapy.

[Intrafocal BCG therapy of metastasizing malignant melanoma].

Therapeutical possibilities and side effects of intrafocal BCG-vaccination into metastases of malignant melanomas are discussed. Only in one of our three cases, this special method of unspecific immunstimulation induced a remarkable regression of tumor size. The second patient showed a partial remission and in the third there was no effect at all. Besides local irritation with ulceration we observed severe generalized side effects in all patients. A granulomatous hepatitis, which represents the most severe complication of this therapeutical method, occurred in one case. Its successful treatment with tuberculostatic agents favors the assumption of an infectious genesis.

[Determination of cobalt in small samples of tissues and organs of the rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) by flameless atomic-absorption-spectroscopy (author's transl)].

In order to increase our knowledge about the distribution pattern of the trace mineral cobalt in fish, cobalt contents of tissues and inner organs of rainbow trout were analysed. Cobalt determinations were performed by flameless atomic-absorption-spectroscopy with a heated graphite analyzer after digestion of the organic material with concentrated nitric acid in a closed system under pressure (pressure decomposition). In order to concentrate and separate the trace cobalt quantities from the main matrix constituents a micro-solvent-extraction system with ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate (APDC) as heavy metal chelating reagent and toluene as extraction solvent was developed. The extraction procedure yielded a recovery of more than 95% as determined the use of an isotope method (radiotracer experiments with Co-57). Results (calculated on wet weight basis) showed that the element under study was mainly accumulated in the kidney (0.195-0.449 microgram/g). Smaller amounts were found in blood (0.038-0.090 microgram/g), spleen (0.015-0.078 microgram/g, and liver 0.015-0.068 microgram/g). The values for skeletal and muscle tissue were low and ranged from 0.007 to 0.014 microgram/g a 0.002 to 0.007 microgram/g respectively.

Klinefelter's syndrome and incontinentia pigmenti Bloch-Sulzberger.

We report a newborn with incontinentia pigmenti Bloch-Sulzberger and male phenotype. Chromosome analysis revealed a Klinefelter's syndrome 47,XXY. These findings are compatible with the hypothesis of dominant sexlinked genes carried on the X-chromosome in this disease.

Identification of the triploid genome by the C-banding method.

We report on cytogenetic studies of a malformed fetus, whose clinical symptoms indicated the diagnosis of triploidy. This was confirmed by chromosome analysis of peripheral lymphocytes of cord blood. Using the C-banding method it was possible to identify the origin of the extra haploid set: marker chromosomes indicate, that nonreduction of the first meiotic division in the father's spermiogenesis most probably leads to triploidy. However, in our case fertilization of the zygote by two sperms cannot be excluded.

Cytogenetic investigations in a new case of Bloom's syndrome.

Cytogenetic studies of an 8-year-old caucasian girl with typical but mild manifestation of Bloom's syndrome showed a characteristic increase of homologous chromatid translocations and prematurely condensed chromosomes. The average frequency of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) in lymphocytes with 133 was much higher than in skin fibroblasts with 49. The inter- and intrachromosomal distributions of SCE in lymphocytes were analyzed.
