[Effect of sulfuric acid vapors on the respiratory system].

The influence of a mixture of sulphuric acid vapour and SO2 mist upon the respiratory tract of animals was investigated during on exposure lasting 8 and 12 hours. Marked inflammatory changes in the upper respiratory tract, bronchioli and lung parenchyma were found. These changes were manifested by inflammatory infiltrations and abundant production of mucous in the bronchial tree. A significant increase in the number of dust cells in the lumen of bronchioli was also observed. A decrease of mitotic index was found in the epithelium of oral cavity after inhalator intoxication with sulphuric acid. This may lead to disturbances in the repair of epithelium. The authors emphasize the intensity of changes in proportion to H2SO4 dosage.

Variation of Se, Zn, Co, Fe and Rb distribution in rats after injection with selenium or sulfur compounds.

Contents of Se, Zn, Co, Fe and Rb in liver, kidney, heart, spleen, brain, pancreas and testicle of Wistar rats were determined 2 h after i.p. injection with selenodiglutathione, selenomethionine, selenocystine, selenocystamine, methionine, cystine and cystamine. Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was applied as the analytical method. It was found that Se was incorporated to all examined rat organs. High Se incorporation was observed after injection with selenomethionine and selenocystine. Variations in the Zn, Co, Fe and Rb contents were observed in all the investigated organs after the injections. These variations depended upon injected compounds.

The incorporation of selenium and ytterbium into the eyes of mice.

The incorporation of Se and Yb into the eyes of mice has been studied. Selenodiglutathione, (GS)2Se, or ytterbium chloride, YbCl3, were injected intraperitoneally into mice: either alone, combined, or after various time intervals. Instrumental neutron activation analysis was applied as the analytical method for the determination of the levels of Se and Yb. The concentrations of both investigated elements were highest in the retinal tissue of the eye. YbCl3 influenced the distribution of Se in the eye.

Gas-liquid chromatography of free amino acids in the cytosol of mammalian atrium and ventricle of the heart.

N-Trifluoroacetyl n-butyl ester derivatives of amino acids were studied. The investigations, carried out on random slaughter-house material, were based on the results of histological and biochemical differences between the atrium and ventricle of the mammalian heart muscle. The data indicate a high level of glutamic acid, and a predominance of tyrosine in the atrium and phenylalanine in the ventricle. The results provide evidence for metabolic differences between the atrium and the ventricle of the heart. This finding may have some significance in heart muscle defects.

Gas chromatographic analysis of free amino acids in the hyaloplasm of the hypophysis, pineal gland, thyroid gland, spinal cord, thymus and lymph nodes of the cow.

Studies of the qualitative and quantitative composition of free amino acids in the hyaloplasm of the hypophysis, pineal gland, thyroid gland, spinal cord, thymus and lymph nodes of the cow are described. The following findings are reported: the highest levels of alanine, valine, glycine, isoleucine, histidine, leucine, threonine, serine, phenylalanine, tyrosine and lysine are found in the thyroid gland, methionine and aspartic acid in the spinal cord, tryptophan and hydroxyproline in the pineal gland, and proline and glutamic acid in the thymus gland. The highest level by weight is that of glutamic acid in all tissues. The presence of alpha-aminobutyric acid combined with sarcosine and 4-aminoisobutyric acid with 2-AOA and citrulline with cystine was demonstrated. alpha-Aminoisobutyric acid and isovaline were found in the spinal cord.

Gas-liquid chromatography of free amino acids in the hyaloplasm of rat cerebral, cerebellar and ocular tissues, and in skeletal and heart muscle.

The paper deals with the composition of amino acids in the hyaloplasm of cerebral tissue, cerebellum, eyeball, heart muscle and skeletal muscles. The investigations performed showed that: the most numerous groups of peaks were obtained from heart muscle (45), cerebellar tissue (43), skeletal muscle (36), eyeball (29) and cerebral tissue (25); and the highest molar levels corresponded to those of tryptophan in skeletal muscle, heart and cerebellum, proline in the heart, valine in the eyeball, and aspartic acid in the brain. Weight ratios indicated high contents of histidine, tyrosine and phenylalanine in the tissues of the skeletal muscles, the heart and cerebellum.

Histochemical and histoenzymatic changes in mouse liver in subacute benzene intoxication.

The investigations were performed on mice. They were divided into a control group and 4 experimental groups. The experimental animals were administered intraperitoneally benzene 6 X every 24 h. The animals were decapitated 30 min. 4, 12 and 24 h after the last benzene administration. During the experiment, dyeing for neutral lipids and glycogen was carried out, and the activity of NADH2-r.t., SDH, G-6-Pase, ATP-ase and ACP was estimated. A decrease of glycogen content in liver cells, deviations in the amount of neutral lipids, reversible decrease of mitochondrial enzymes activity, and intensification of the processes of intracellular catabolism were found.

The behaviour of some enzymes in the mouse liver due to chronic benzene intoxication.

1. Long trem benzene action brings about a permanent decrease in oxidoreductive enzymes and active transport as well as an inactivation of the lysosomal apparatus in liver-cells. 2. Particular liver lobule zones show different sensitivity to toxic action of benzene which might result from their different role in the processes of benzene biotransformation.

Quantitative determination of acid phosphatase activity detected in tissue sections according to the Burstone method.

Quantitative determination of the activity of acid phosphatase detected in tissue sections using Burstone's method. The experiment was performed on inbred rats. A reaction for AcP according to Burstone was made in liver sections, incubation time was fixed experimentally. The material obtained from each animal was divided into 3 parts. One of them was used for enzymatic estimations, the 2nd for planimetry of sections, and the 3rd was eluted by N,N-dimethylformanid, and the obtained coloured product was subjected to spectrophotometric analysis at the Spectrophotometer Unicam SP 8000 B. Homogeneity of the coloured product eluted from the sections as well as its identity with the coloured product obtained during the reaction with a preparation of crystalline acid phosphatase was found. Repeatability of the obtained activity for the inbred animals was shown. The obtained results were subjected to statistical analysis. The method of quantitative estimation of AcP activity may be useful in histoenzymatic works.

The effect of 35SO2 binding by ammonia on sulfur incorporation into rat tissues.

Sulfur metabolism was traced in experimental investigations on rats, and the importance of the method of sulfur dioxide neutralized by ammonia was estimated. The animals were exposed to 35SO2 by means of inhalation, and radioactivity in several organs at different periods of exposure was traced. Apart from that, autoradiographic investigations were carried out in order to show the incorporation of radioactive sulfur into particular elements of the cell in different tissues. Elimination of isotope with urine and feces at different periods of time after exposure was also determined. It was found that the use of ammonia to neutralize sulfur dioxide in the air decreased the amount of sulfur which could enter the organism as a result of breathing air contaminated by SO2.

The dynamics of histoenzymatic changes in the kidney in acute poisoning with benzene.

The experiments were carried out in mice which were divided into 4 experimental groups and a control group. In the course of the experiment SD, NADH2-tetrazolium reductase; ATP-ase, G-6-P-ase and AP were observed. It was found that acute benzene intoxication causes the disturbances in the enzymatic activities of the cells of the main segment of the nephron. The impairment of tissue respiration and oxygen phosphorylation and of active transport is due to benzene intoxication. Benzene leads to injury of the endoplasmatic reticulum in the cells of the kidney.
