Test-retest reliability and internal consistency of a variety of measures of dietary restraint and body concerns in a sample of adolescent girls.

OBJECTIVE: Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were examined in a variety of measures relating to body concerns and dieting and eating behaviors. METHOD: Grade 9 females (n = 363) from nine schools completed questionnaires with the aid of a definitions glossary at Time 1, including the five subscales of the Eating Attitudes Test, the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire-Restraint scale, a variety of measures of current size and ideal size (self, parents) based on the Body Figure Rating Questionnaire, the Appearance Evaluation and Appearance Orientation subscales of the Multidimensional Body Self-Rating Questionnaire, and the Weight Loss Behaviors Scale. Four to 5 weeks later, 164 girls completed the questionnaires again. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Findings indicated adequate internal consistency and high test-retest correlations for all measures. Some measures, particularly those related to body size and dietary restraint, showed a slight increase in group means over time.

Profiles of leadership: a dialogue with two nursing revolutionaries.

Rebels break the rules and revolutionaries rewrite them because the old rules are no longer adequate. These revolutionary leaders examine their life journeys and highlight issues and events that prepared them for nontraditional nursing roles; that of consultant and CEO. Patterns of thought and behavior nested within their stories provide a rich map for the contemporary nurse seeking to expand their view of the health care landscape.

The advanced practice nurse's role in differentiated practice: Martha's story.

The changing health care environment and increasing patient acuity necessitate a coordinated effort among all health care disciplines to assure the best patient outcomes. The advanced practice nurse in the role of case manager is well qualified to serve as the leader of this team. Within the framework of differentiated practice, advanced practice nurses work in tandem with associate and primary nurses to ensure positive quality, financial, and satisfaction outcomes. Clinical expertise and knowledge of systems allow the advanced practice nurse to assist the patient through complex systems to achieve these ends.

Psilocybin as a discriminative stimulus: lack of specificity in an animal behavior model for 'hallucinogens'.

Fifteen rats were trained to discriminate between the tryptamine hallucinogen psilocybin (4-phosphoryloxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine; 1.0 mg/kg) and saline in a two-lever choice task. Dose-response and time-response curves were obtained. The psilocybin cue generalized to psilocin (the dephosphorylated congener of psilocybin) and to the prototypical indoleamine hallucinogen LSD, but not to the phenylethylamine hallucinogen mescaline. These results indicate that the hallucinogenic effects of these drugs in humans may not be identical with their discriminative stimulus functions in animals, and that these four compounds may not be members of a single drug class. The term 'hallucinogen' may thus be a misnomer in the context of drug discrimination studies in nonhumans.

Differentiated practice: the evolution of professional nursing.

Differentiated practice identifies and uses three distinct nursing roles to create a comprehensive nursing care delivery system that meets client needs across the health care continuum. Clearly defined associate degree in nursing, bachelor's of science in nursing, and master's science in nursing competencies present career opportunities for professional nurses at the bedside providing, integrating, or managing client care as well as options in management, education, and regulation. An evolutionary paradigm shift required of all nurses is the awareness that each nurse is not the whole of nursing, but rather each nurse contributes to the whole of nursing. A nursing community comprised of differentiated roles that are mutually valued and well integrated will position nursing as a powerful force in meeting the diversity and complexity of health care needs in contemporary society.
