[An epizootic Staphylococcus infection in a nude mouse colony].

An epizootic of Staphylococcus infection causing abscesses was encountered in a small-scale breeding colony of nude mice of BALB/c background. The incidence of abscess was sporadic and mostly nude (nu/nu) mice aged over 3 months were affected. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from the face, oral cavity, and feces of almost all nu/nu and heterozygous (nu/+) mice in the colony. After a prolonged time period, up to 10 to 14 months of age, almost all the S. aureus-carrying nu/nu mice produced abscesses and eventually died. Athymicity of the host seemed to be a prerequisite for the abscess formation since nu/+ mice were spared from the lesions. Also, transfer of immunocompetent spleen cells cured the abscesses of the affected nude mice.

Biological characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from nude mice.

The characteristics of 50 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from BALB/c nude mice (nu/nu, nu/+) with or without subcutaneous abscesses [13] were examined. All the 50 strains belonged to biotype B according to the classification by Hájek and Marsálek. All of them were phage typable, showing a single phage pattern of 52A/79/47/53/77/83A/85. The coagulase type was classified as VII. All of the 50 strains were highly sensitive to penicillin, methylphenylisoxazolyl penicillin, erythromycin, spiramycin, lincomycin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, kanamycin, gentamicin and cephaloridine, but were resistant to sulfisoxazole. Two S. aureus strains isolated from the nostril and finger of one person working in the mouse colony were identified as the same biotype as the murine strains but different in phage type, coagulase type and drug resistance pattern.

Regional distribution of arylsulfatase C and estrone-sulfate sulfatase activities in rat brain and hypophysis.

Regional distributions of arylsulfatase C and estrone-sulfate sulfatase activities were studied in rat brain and hypophysis by both histochemical and biochemical methods. Both methods showed that high activities of both enzymes were localized in pineal gland, choroid plexus, and adenohypophysis. Ultracytochemical techniques visualized the arylsulfatase C activity in the endoplasmic reticulum and the nuclear envelope of pineal cells, ependymal cells, and some types of cells of the adenohypophysis.

Phage patterns of Staphylococcus hyicus subsp. hyicus isolated from chickens, cattle and pigs.

Bacteriophage typing was performed on 285 strains of Staphylococcus hyicus subsp. hyicus isolated from pigs, chickens, and cattle, using the 5 S. hyicus subsp. hyicus phages, S9, S13, S39, S188 and CH11. One hundred and twenty-eight (64.3%) of the 199 swine strains, 62 (100%) of the 62 chicken strains, and 24 (100%) of the 24 cattle strains were typable at either routine test dilution (RTD) or 100 X RTD. Most (124/128) of the typable swine strains showed phage patterns consisting of lytic reactions with one or more of the phages S9, S13, S39 and S188. Phage patterns including phage CH11 were detected in only 4 swine strains. All of the typable chicken strains showed phage patterns consisting of lytic reactions with phage CH11. Cattle strains had the phage patterns that were found most frequently in swine and chicken strains. This study suggested that phage typing might be a useful marker for distinguishing ecovars within S. hyicus subsp. hyicus.

Altered high density lipoprotein composition in manganese-deficient Sprague-Dawley and Wistar rats.

The objective of this experiment was to determine whether changes in liver cholesterol content, plasma lipids and lipoprotein composition result from dietary manganese (Mn) deficiency in the Sprague-Dawley (SD) and the Wistar (W) rat. Weanling rats of both strains were fed Mn-deficient (1 ppm Mn) or Mn-adequate (45 ppm Mn) diets for 10 wk. After the 10-wk period rats were killed and plasma, liver, kidney and heart were collected. Liver, kidney and heart Mn concentrations were significantly lower in the rats fed the Mn-deficient diet than in controls. Plasma high density lipoprotein (HDL) (density 1.050-1.1963) was isolated by sequential ultracentrifugation. Plasma cholesterol levels were similar for all groups. HDL protein, cholesterol and apo E levels were significantly reduced with Mn deficiency. A shift to a smaller HDL particle was associated with Mn deficiency, based on gradient gel electrophoresis. The shift in size was more pronounced in the SD strain. Liver concentrations of total and free cholesterol were lower with Mn deficiency but more noticeably in the SD group. The results of our study suggest a role for Mn in HDL metabolism in vivo in both SD and W rats with a trend toward a greater effect in the SD strain.
