This paper discusses the concept of death review. Death review is an important component of grief resolution. The circumstances of the illness and death need to be repeated several times as survivors cope with their own pain and distress. The smallest event recalled may be helpful in resolving grief.

This study investigates the concept of patient/family as a unit of care insofar as it affects the treatment of dying patients. One hundred social workers in three institutional settings were interviewed to determine if the patient/family concept is perceived to be more prevalent in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, or hospices. The family's allowable involvement in care was found to differ in these settings as were some aspects of health care provided by professionals to the family. The concept of patient/family as a unit of care was a salient one, and the concept was correlated across the three settings with job satisfaction and other characteristics of an optimal model of care.

Caring for disabled family members at home can create stress that may exacerbate existing dysfunctions in the family. By changing the orientation of hospital-based social work from "disabled family member as burden" to "family unit as an ongoing system," the authors have succeeded in helping dysfunctional, disunited families become functional family systems.
This article describes group work services to ambulatory emphysema patients in a community hospital. The group is viewed as an essential component in the treatment of patients with a chronically disabling illness. These patients experience devastating changes in their lives in the community, in the world of work, and in their families. Physical and respiratory therapy and medication comprise the medical treatment, group work provides the peer support necessary for coping with the disease in a way as to assist with maintaining health and improving the quality of life.
