The need of a nationwide system of drug use review (DUR) in hospitals is discussed. Many drugs important in terms of both potential adverse effects and cost (e.g., aminoglycosides and heparin) are used primarily in hospitals, a setting for which nationwide data on key elements of use and prescribing are not available. A main problem is one of logistics, stemming primarily from a lack of uniformity in how drug information is recorded. Since data collection and organization are pivotal prerequisites for drug use review, there is a need for standardization in data collection if data from various institutions are to be compared. Uniform data elements are proposed that would allow for national tabulations and estimates, which could provide the normative data critical to both drug use review and drug epidemiology.

We report a case of liposarcoma of the parotid gland. The tumor was initially controlled with radiation therapy, surgery, and chemotherapy, but the patient died in 24 months with widespread metastatic disease.

Eleven cases of granular cell tumor were reviewed. In two of the cases multiple sites of involvement were seen. The tumor occurred in the oral cavity in both of these cases and each was initially wrongly diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma. The most common site was the subcutaneous tissue (nine patients) and the tongue was involved in three cases. In one patient the parotid gland was involved. Eight of the patients were females and three were males; seven were black and four were white. The importance of differentiating between squamous cell carcinoma and granular cell tumor is stressed, as is the need for a simple wide surgical excision.

A synthesis of L-dendroketose (5) has been achieved by microbiological oxidation by Acetobacter suboxydans of the branched-chain alditol 2-C-(hydroxy-methyl)-D-erythro-pentitol (4). Treatment of the oxidation product with acetone, copper(II) sulfate, and sulfuric acid afforded the two di-O-isopropylidene-L-dendro-ketose derivatives 6 and 7. Assignment of configuration at the branching carbon atom (C-4) and at the anomeric center in 6 and 7 was made on the basis of the carbon-13 magnetic resonance spectra of these derivatives.
The possibility of immobilization of Acetobacter suboxydans cells by entrapment within polyacrylamide gels or by intercellular cross-linking with glutaral-dehyde was investigated. The oxidation of unsubstituted alditols and aldose diethyl dithioacetals by the resultant modified cells has been achieved.
This paper presents information on the cranial and dental anomalies observed in the crania of three species of platyrrhine monkeys collected in Nicaragua. Cranial anomalies that are discussed include plagiocephaly, bregmatic fontanelle bones, Wormian bones, cranial trauma, and heterotopic bones. Among the dental anomalies that were studied were the following: crazing caries, periodontal and pulpal disorders, alveolar thinning, mechanical loss, excessive attrition, shear bite, impacted molars, supernumerary teeth, congenital agencies, congenital crown aberration, and irregular placement.
A case of benign rhabdomyoma is presented, and the pathology is discussed with reference to its differential diagnosis. The literature is reviewed and the common features of the tumor are described.
