Malignant glioma: current treatment perspectives.

Cytoreduction through multimodality therapy is the primary goal in management of malignant gliomas. Clinical trials such as those offered by the Brain Tumor Cooperative Group help to define current standards of care and investigate new therapies. Available therapies are in the medical, surgical, radiation and chemotherapeutic realms.

The incidence of tuberculosis in Lechwe (marsh antelope).

Of the 238 specimens of tissue collected from 70 lechwe (marsh antelope) 79 yielded M. bovis, 1 yielded a mixed growth of M. bovis and an 'atypical' mycobacterium and 6 yielded 'atypical' mycobacteria; the 'atypical' mycobacteria were probably contaminants. Of the 63 lechwe killed as a 1 in 10 random sample from four herds, M. bovis was obtained from 21 animals, indicating that 33% of wild lechwe are infected with tuberculosis.

Comparison of machine and manual staining of direct smears for acid-fast bacilli by fluorescence microscopy.

Comparisons were made in Lusaka and in London between manual staining and staining in an automatic machine with auramine-phenol of direct smears of sputum and other types of specimen for acid-fast bacilli. No evidence was obtained of carry-over of acid-fast bacilli from positive to negative smears during machine staining. There was improved contrast between bacilli and the background in smears prepared with the machine.
