College males reported drinking more frequently and in higher amounts than females. Correlations between quantity-frequency (QF) indices of drinking by parents and by their college-age children showed the greatest similarity between fathers and sons. Log linear analyses compared each parent's drinking level against each of three other factors that might affect the QF levels of college-age children: the relationship between parent and child, the effect of the parent's drinking on the parent, and how the parent's drinking affected their treatment of the child. The results supported models in which the relationship of each parent's drinking to the QF levels of both sons and daughters was affected by the closeness of the parent-child relationship. However, there was no support for models involving how each parent's drinking affected that parent or how each parent's drinking affected their treatment of the child.
We investigated whether an aqueous extract of Asparagus cochinchinensis Merrill (Liliaceae) roots (ACAE) inhibits secretion of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) from primary cultures of mouse astrocytes. ACAE dose-dependently inhibited the TNF-alpha secretion by astrocytes stimulated with substance P (SP) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). IL-1 has been shown to elevate TNF-alpha secretion from LPS-stimulated astrocytes while having no effect on astrocytes in the absence of LPS. We therefore investigated whether IL-1 mediated inhibition of TNF-alpha secretion from astrocytes by ACAE. Treatment of ACAE to astrocytes stimulated with both LPS and SP decreased IL-1 secretion. Moreover, incubation of astrocytes with IL-1 antibody abolished the synergistic cooperative effect of LPS and SP. These results suggest that ACAE may inhibit TNF-alpha secretion by inhibiting IL-1 secretion and that ACAE has a antiinflammatory activity in the central nervous system.
Immunohistochemistry is part of the routine diagnosis of the neuroendocrine tumors. In our study, we included 52 paragangliomas with various localizations by routine histology and immunohistochemistry. In order to increase the diagnostic specificity, a complex immunohistochemistry panel has been performed consisting of Bcl-2, Ki-67, Bax and Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase-Activating Peptide (PACAP), somatostatin, VIP and Calcitonin Gene Related Peptide (CGRP). After heat induced antigen retrieval, the immunostaining was performed by StreptABC using DAB as a chromogen. We were the first to demonstrate the presence of Bax and PACAP in paragangliomas. Some of the used markers are of prognostic value. The relationship between Bcl-2 and Bax is decisive in generating the final response to the input apoptotic signals. The Ki-67 antigen staining has gained wide acceptance in prognostic evaluation of other tumor types. We noted a small number of Ki-67 positive cases, which signifies a low mitotic activity of these tumors and a relatively high number of Bax positivities (32.9%) and the much lower number of Bcl-2 positivities (11.39%), and could explain the benign behaviour of paragangliomas.
Fibrocystic mastopathy (FM), a benign lesion, is considered by many author like a premalignant lesion. Breast carcinoma (CA) represents the most frequent female tumor and the second mortality cause through cancer, after the bronchopulmonary cancer. At the Department of Pathology from Tg. Mureş, we selected 190 cases, for 10 month: 102 presented FM, 41 CA and 47 CA + FM. In every case, we have examined 2 slides stained with HE. In difficult cases, we performed special stains (van Gieson, H-PAS, Alcian). We studied the pulmonary tumor, adjacent mammary tissue and axillary lymph nodes. The present data of literature and the experience of the Department of Pathology from Tg. Mureş showed a strong relationship between the presence of FM and the appearance of CA: both lesions have a common field of hormonal disfunction and intraductal and intralobular hyperplasia (an microscopic feature of mastopathy) increase the risk of CA.
The examination of the myocardium in 609 natural and violent death cases by using Lie's histochemical method revealed recent ischaemic lesions, extended or microfocal, in 511 cases. These lesions were prevailingly extended in sudden cardiac deaths, alcoholic intoxication and electrocution, while in the various kinds of shock, in asphyxia and pesticide poisoning cases they were of a predominantly microfocal nature. According to these morphological changes, the vascular and metabolic factors involved in producing ischaemic cardiomyopathy are discussed.

The authors examine the incidence of fire setting among hospitalized children according to age, and also compare the characteristics of the fire-setter group to a control group.
