Electron drift velocities in mixtures of helium and xenon and experimental verification of corrections to Blanc's law.

Measurements of electron drift velocities were performed in pure Xe and He and in a number of mixtures ranging up to 70% of Xe. The data were obtained by using a pulsed Townsend technique over the density-normalized electric field strength E/N between 1 and 100 Td . Even for pure gases there are no data in the entire range covered here, and these data represent an extension of accurate drift velocities to higher E/N. A selection of well-established cross sections for low energies, which was extended to higher energies, led to a reasonably good agreement of the calculated transport coefficients with the available data. At the same time we have applied the standard (common E/N) Blanc's law and two forms of common mean energy (CME, due to Chiflykian) procedures. Blanc's law fails for most mixtures at low and moderate E/N, while the CME procedure is capable of following the experimental data for the mixtures much more closely, and even predicting the negative differential conductivity region when such effect does not exist for pure gases. Thus the present paper also represents an experimental test of procedures to correct the standard Blanc's law. Finally, we have used the data for two mixtures to obtain results for the third mixture and in all cases this procedure gave excellent results even though only the standard Blanc's law was used in the process.

Occupational accidents in Serbian industries in transition.

Occupational accidents and injuries present a serious social, medical and economical problem in Serbian industries in transition. The purpose of this study is to estimate the number and average annual rate of occupational accidents and traumatic injuries in Serbian industries in transition, between 1992 and 2003, and to estimate the effects of a preventive safety program in the rubber manufacturing industry and in the production of electrical goods and equipment. This paper presents a descriptive analysis of occupational accidents and injuries which occurred in all industries over a twelve years period. In the rubber manufacturing industry and in the production of electrical goods and equipment a surveillance and prevention program has been implemented since 1997. A significant drop after 1997 in average annual accidents rate and severity ratio of injuries in these two industries has been observed, which was not the case in the other industries, and can be explained by the positive effects of the safety training program. The study documents that the safety training program showed significant effects, especially in case of workers with less than ten years of working experience.

Bi-directional flow sensor with a wide dynamic range for medical applications.

This paper describes a novel three-wire thermal flow sensor for medical applications. The present innovation for low-frequency measurements involves the use of a pulsed-wire anemometer with a comparatively large wire diameter (12.5 microm and larger) together with a novel signal processing approach. A small wire is heated using a sinusoidal alternating current, and two sensing wires, acting as resistance thermometers, are set parallel to, and at a small distance on either side of, the pulsed wire. The thermal wake of the pulsed wire is convected downstream to one of the two receiving wires which detect its delayed arrival. This arrangement allows the sensing of both the direction and the flow velocity component normal to the three probes. By appropriate signal processing, the present sensor can be operated such that the phase shift between the periodic current that drives the central wire and the detected signal by either the upstream or downstream wire takes into account a combination of convection, diffusion and the finite thermal response time of both the pulsed wire and the receiving wire. Because the time constants increase as the flow velocity decreases, the time lag due to thermal inertia supplements the time lag due to the true time of flight, thus yielding an effective operating range of 0.05 m/s <or= U <or= 25 m/s , which corresponds to a dynamic range of 500:1. This wide velocity range is an order of magnitude larger than that for the traditional time-of-flight pulsed-wire anemometers. An important application of the bi-directional thermal flowmeter is the measurement of human respiration, e.g. for early diagnostics of asthmatic attacks. The main advantage of the present sensor is its low sensitivity to variations in temperature and also to the composition of the flowing gas. Also, a calibration will be not needed for each density and gas used in addition to that for velocity. The resultant design work aimed at developing a sensor that can be mass-produced at low cost.

[Experimental and clinical possibilities of transplantation of the injured and totally devascularized spleen].

The most severe spleen lesions with conquasation and devascularisation of entire organ, when it is practically impossible to do any preservating surgical procedure, are the true indications for the transplantation of this extremely important immunological organ. We have performed the evaluation of the surgical procedure of heterotopic auto transplantation in the 30 dogs with severe spleen lesions. Simulation of totally devascularized spleen with the lesions of V degree was performed by disrupting all segmental blood vessels with deep and long longitudinal transhilar incision. During the 3 months follow-up period, animals were subjected to numerous explorations in order to macroscopically and histologically valuate the implant. In most cases (80-85%) implants had complete vitality with the preservation of normal tissue architecture, while 15-20% of implants had partial or total fibrosis. There were no mortality and no complications after this preservation procedure. The presence of fibrosis in some implants suggests that the implant preparation should be better performed and that transplantation of larger tissue volume is needed. Enriched with this experimental experience we have performed heterotopic auto transplantation in 2 patients with spleen lesion of V degree (car accident and injury at work) with very satisfactory results.

[Treatment of bite wounds and cat-scratch disease].

Although rabies is the most serious consequence of animal bite injuries, in urban rabies-free countries the risk of rabies is far lower than the risk of bacterial infections of the wound. The most frequent etiologic cause of the wound infections after dog bites is Pasteurella multocida, as well as in the case of bites by cats, after which cat-scratch disease may also develop, its main cause being Bartonella henselae. All bite injuries must be carefully cleaned and disinfected; it is necessary to estimate the need of antirabies and antitetanus protection, and to introduce antibiotic treatment for prevention, particularly in the case of deep sting wounds caused mostly by cats.

Occupational profile and cardiac risks: mechanisms and implications for professional drivers.

Of the population of 900 drivers, 419 drivers with changes in the circulatory system were enrolled in the study, and the control group consisted of 150 healthy drivers. In both groups there were professional and non-professional drivers. Traffic accidents caused by these drivers were registered over a five-year period. Drivers with cardiovascular diseases and professional drivers were more frequently responsible for accidents than healthy and non-professional drivers. The comparison between the group studied and the controls indicated over a two-fold increase in the number of accidents caused by sick drivers.

Protolytic constants of nizatidine, ranitidine and N,N'-dimethyl-2-nitro-1,1-ethenediamine; spectrophotometric and theoretical investigation.

The prototropic exchange equilibria of two drugs, nizatidine (I) and ranitidine(II), and also of structurally related the N,N'-dimethyl-2-nitro-1,1-ethenediamine molecule (III) were investigated. From the changes in electronic spectra in media of various acidity several protonation constants were determined. For pK values were -0.82, 1.95, and 6.67; for ranitidine pK values were 1.95 and 8.13; and for III was 2.60. The hydroxylation equilibrium constant in strongly alkaline media was determined too. Corresponding pK(a) values were 13.23 for I, 13.36 for II and 13.76 for III. Molecular orbital calculations of electronic spectra confirmed that pK 1.95 for I and II, and pK 2.60 for III, are associated with C-protonation of nitroethenediamine fragment, while all pK(a) values correspond to the addition of HO- anion at the same double bond.

[Fertility in men after mumps infection without manifestations of orchitis].

The study presents results of an investigation on male fertility after mumps infection without clinically manifested mumps orchitis. The study included 30 patients, but 10 were excluded because of other ethnologic factors connected to male infertility. Out of 20 patients 12 were fertile, while 8 were subfertile. All of these 8 subfertile patients were with asthenospermia, that is with decreased sperm motility.

[New findings on the etiopathogenesis and clinical manifestations of Epstein-Barr virus infections].

Epstein-Barr virus is an ubiquitous member of the human herpes virus family. A specific antigen structure of the Epstein-Barr virus was discovered in the last decade. It was possible to diagnose some unusual clinical manifestations of EBV infections and its clinical course by different serologic analyses (immunofluorescent tests, immunoenzyme assay and polymerase chain reaction). This is very important in cases of atypical primary infections (hepatitis, meningoencephalitis), chronic mononucleosis and lymphoproliferative disorders and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Famciclovir, a new antiviral agent (peroral form of penciclovir) may play an important role in the therapy of these infections.

[Fever of unknown origin].

Febrile episodes of unknown origin are a great challenge for physicians practitioners, but often a great problem too, as they remain unsolved in a certain percentage of patients. Increased temperature is the most common characteristic of infections, so that is why febrile episodes of unknown origin are mostly part of the practice of epidemiologists. This study shows that febrile episodes of unknown origin can be caused by a great number of other diseases and gives the sequence of diagnostic procedures in regard to the age and subjective difficulties as well as therapeutic approach to solving the cause of the febrile episode of unknown origin.

[Clinical characteristics of trichinosis].

91 patients with trichinosis were treated at the Clinic of Infectious and Dermatovenereology Diseases in Novi Sad during a one-year period. In 64% of patients the onset was intestinal, while in 36% it was invasive. Diarrhea (in 28.89%) and abdominal pain (in 22.22%) are the most common symptoms of the intestinal stage. Nausea, vomiting and opstipation are less common. The main symptoms of the invasive stage are myalgia (65.54%), high temperature and eyelid edema (57.78%). Facial edema (38.89%), general weakness (24.44%), conjunctivitis (15.56%) and rash (8.89%) are somewhat less common. Heavy sweating, headache, nervousness, psychic instability and fast forgetting occur in a small number of treated patients. Myocarditis and encephalitis occurred in 3.33% of patients. There were 43.33% of patients with mild clinical picture, 40% with mild-to-severe and 16.66% with severe clinical picture. 54.44% of patients were males and 45.56% were females, and it can be said that sex did not influence the severeness of the clinical picture. The youngest patient was 5 years of age, the oldest 72. Most patients were 21-50 years of age but we did not establish statistical importance between clinical picture severeness in regard to age. The shortest period of incubation was 5 days, the longest 40 days. Average incubation period was 18.05 days (x = 18.05). Studying period of incubation and severeness of the clinical picture we established the following (x2 = 28.535). The shorter the incubation period, the severer the disease.

[Herpes simplex virus and ovarian malignancies].

Immunologic methods were used to examine 35 sera and the same number of malignant tissue samples taken from female patients with verified ovarian malignomas in order to establish presence of herpes simplex virus. In 23 preoperative sera presence of herpes simplex virus antibodies was established. In 23 postoperatively taken sera there was an evident decrease of antibody titres. In both samples antibodies were IgG class. In 25 samples of malignant tissues presence of herpes simplex virus antigen was established by method of indirect imunnofluorescency. In 9 samples antigen was of the type 1. In 6 cases it was herpes simplex virus of type 2. In order to isolate the complete infective virion, acellular filtrates taken from malignant tissues were used, inoculated with Vero cell cultures, as well as experimental intracerebrally inoculated mice. Cytopathogenic effect on cell cultures was typical but poor and it disappeared in the following passages. In inoculated mice symptoms were also typical, but incomplete. In the examined brains dyed by indirect imunnofluorescency method only focal fluorescence being different from diffuse which characterizes the complete infective virus, was established.

[Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Vojvodina].

This paper presents 4 serologically confirmed cases of hemorrhagic fever with kidney syndrome. The objective of this study was to point to occurrence of unexpected hemorrhagic fever with kidney syndrome, to different clinical pictures and differential-diagnostic difficulties as well as to therapeutic procedures of serious cases. The disease had a sudden onset with general signs of infection in all our patients. 3 out of 4 patients had had a dominant symptomatology in regard to gastrointestinal tract, whereas signs of acute renal insufficiency appeared later. In 3 patients there was a complete recovery without consequences, while one female patient died on the twelfth day of the disease.

[The Epstein-Barr virus and chronic fatigue syndrome].

Lately discovered chronic fatigue syndrome is associated with Epstein-Barr virus infection. The objective of this paper was to detect this syndrome in our patients. 31 patients with cured acute infective mononucleosis were examined by questionnaire, physical check-up and laboratory analyses in order to detect disorders characteristic for chronic fatigue syndrome. Six months after they had been cured, out of 7 patients 5 patients complained of frequent sore throat, fatigue and exhaustion, and a year later, all 5 patients were sleepy and tired all the time. More than a year after the acute illness 19 patients were examined and in 5.6% frequent sore throat and enlarged neck lymph nodes occurred. The gathered results point to disorders characteristic for chronic fatigue syndrome in a high percentage. This pilot study should only be the beginning of examinations of this kind.

[Lyme disease--neuroborreliosis].

Lyme disease is an infective disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi transmitted by ticks of the Ixodes ricinus. The disease usually has three stages whereas the last, because of domination of neurologic symptomatology is called "neuroborreliosis". This is a case report of a female patient with neuroborreliosis in whom, due to lack of symptoms and signs which characterize the first stage of Lyme disease as well as lack of evidence about the tick, nobody assumed such an etiology. Lyme disease was not confirmed by serologic evaluation until the third stage of the disease occurred. This case points to the conclusion that by differential diagnosis of meningeal syndrome accompanied by maintenance and progredience of neurologic deficit and disorders in mental sphere one should think of the Lyme disease.

[The effect of noise and vibration on the cardiovascular system in exposed workers and possibilities of preventing their harmful effects].

We examined the state of blood pressure, peripheral arterial circulation and changes of polycardiogram before and after three hour work of 160 workers professionally exposed to noise and vibrations. They were divided into two sub-groups regarding physical recreational activity (walking, swimming or running), with the average load level from 60% to 80% of maximal oxygen consumption. 85 workers made up the control group. They were not exposed to noise and vibrations at work. The gathered results show that the prevalence of the arterial hypertension and obliterating endarteritis is statistically significantly higher in the group of workers exposed to noise and vibrations and that these professional damages cause important hemodynamic changes of cardiovascular system, but also that permanent physical recreational activity (swimming, running or walking) can prevent such effects.

[Therapy of salmonella gastroenterocolitis].

At the Clinic for infectious and dermatovenerologic diseases in Novi Sad a prospective randomized, simple, blind investigation of differently organized treatments of salmonellal gastroenterocolitis (symptomatic therapies, ampicillin, co-trimoxazole and ciprofloxacine) was carried out. It was established that there is no statistically significant difference in the length of febrile states in any of the compared therapeutic groups. However, ciprofloxacine significantly shortens diarrhea and excretion of germs comparing with other therapeutic treatments.

[Analysis of causes and sequelae of highway accidents in the region of Nis].

During the last five years there were 12,556 traffic accidents; there were injured persons in 2753 accidents which makes 21.9% (225 killed, 598 seriously and 210 lightly injured). Among the killed victims motor vehicle drivers are dominant, among the seriously injured are pedestrians and travellers are dominant in the group of lightly injured. In these accidents 404 children were injured, mostly 8-11 years of age. In most cases causes of death are polytrauma and craniocerebral injuries. The most frequent causes of traffic accidents resulting injured persons are: traffic regulations not being respected, bad psychophysical state of drivers and vehicle technical defects. The first two reasons are causes of serious traffic accidents. It has been established that weather conditions influence the occurrence and seriousness of traffic accidents, so that this area is characterized by a maximal number of accidents and injured persons during the period May--August.
