The levels of cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP during the second cleavage cycle of eggs of Mactra solidissima have been measured. Cyclic GMP levels vary reciprocally with cyclic AMP levels, the cyclic GMP level increasing up to 4 to 5-fold and the cyclic AMP level falling to 50 percent at the onset of mitosis.
1. The hypoglossal nucleus of whalebone whales is composed of four major subdivisions, forming four parallel columns, here called the dorsomedial, the dorsolateral, the ventromedial and the ventrolateral XII columns. 2. The ventromedial XII column extends throughout the hypoglossal nucleus, forming in whalebone whales the rostral as well as the caudal end of the nucleus. 3. The ventrolateral XII column is lamelliformed and splits into a dorsomedial and a ventrolateral part, the former intimately related topographically to the dorsomedial column. 4. The dorsomedial XII column is torpedo-shaped, tapering in rostral direction and terminating a little short of the rostral end of the ventromedial XII column, while the blunt end terminates immediately caudal to the obex. 5. The dorsolateral XII column is the shortest subdivision, approximately one fourth of the length of the entire hypoglossal nucleus. The blunt rostral end of the torpedo-shaped column blends with the dorsomedial XII column, its tapering caudal end terminating rostral to the obex. 6. The cells of the hypoglossal nucleus vary in size from small to medium-sized and large, the small ones dominating in the dorsomedial, the large ones in the dorsolateral and ventromedial XII columns. The ventrolateral column is characterized by spindle-shaped cells. 7. In the toothed whale Phocaena communis the differentiation of the hypoglossal nucleus is less clearcut than in whalebone whales, but a similar structural priniciple is recognizable.
A patient is described who in addition to having the 48, XXXY Klinefelter syndrome has the autosomal dominant nail-patella syndrome, inherited through his mother from the grandfather. Clinical signs of both syndromes were found. Chromosomal investigation with BUDR incorporation and acridine orange staining showed that one X chromosome stained intensively, while the other X chromosomes were elongated and weakly stained. Difference in degree of stretching of the supernumerary chromosomes was noted. The occurrence of the two rare syndromes in the same patient is assumed to be fortuitous.

A Danish family with seven males with hydrocephalus in three generations is described. Frequent findings in this x-linked recessive form of the disease are irregular cranium, asymmetrical face, thumb held across palm, spasticity of the legs and paradoxical plantar responses. The literature on this mode of inheritance is reviewed.

It is shown that gene 5 protein of bacteriophage M13 is one of the major proteins synthesized in vitro under the direction of M13 replicative-form DNA. By means of DNA-cellulose chromatography, this protein has been purified to homogeneity and its biological characteristics have been compared with those of its native counterpart. Like native gene 5 protein, the purified, in vitro-synthesized protein binds tightly and selectively to single-stranded, but not to double-stranded, DNAs. These results suggest that truly functional gene 5 protein is made in the cell-free system.
