Methyl-1 (S-methylphosphoryl-3) imidazolium (MSPI) was approximately equipotent with DFP in producing in mice a lethal intoxication and in inhibiting in vitro cholinesterases of electric-eel, brain and plasma mice. In vivo, a lethal dose of MSPI inhibited plasma but not brain ChE. The intoxication by MSPI was not cured by the combination of Atropine and TMB4 or of diazepam with Atropine and (or) TMB4 and the cholinesterase inhibition was not reversed by TMB4 in vivo nor in vitro in the conditions where DPF intoxication or Che inhibition were.

Thirty-six premature newborn infants of a very low birthweight (1,500 g or less) are described who did not have respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) by clinical criteria or by biochemical analysis of pulmonary effluent phospholipid (surfactant). Such patients seem to be protected against the development of RDS by intrauterine stress, which results in accelerated maturation of the surfactant system. Chest radiographs in these patients show a pattern of fine, diffuse granularity together with mild congestion suggesting excessive lung fluid, without significant air bronchograms, underaeration, or cardiomegaly. The most frequent complications are apnea with bradycardia and/or a significant left-to-right shunt through a patent ductus arteriosus. The serious complications of intraventricular hemorrhage, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and death are more common in the smaller (1,000 g or less) infants; necrotizing enterocolitis, observed in 25% of patients, was not related to birthweight. The radiographic and clinical presentation of "immature lung" should be distinguished from that of RDS, because the prognosis in this birthweight range is considerably better (83% survival).

The course and complications of fifty-two infants with patent ductus arteriosus requiring closure were assessed prospectively. Twenty-six infants with a PDA received indomethacin for pharmacologic closure of the PDA, and 26 underwent ligation. The current study analyzes and compares the longitudinal follow-up with respect to somatic growth, neurologic function, psychomotor and mental development, and renal, ophthalmologic, and audiologic function in 21 infants in each group who entered the follow-up. No selective morbidity was attributable to PDA closure with indomethacin when compared to surgically treated infants.

The microsomal oxidation of 12 frequently occurring environmental polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons after incubation with rat-liver microsomes has been studied and their metabolites characterized by means of gas-liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. The method enables the detection and characterisation of phenols, diols, triols, and tetrols as trimethylsilyl ethers beside the original hydrocarbons. Moreover, the induction properties of some carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic hydrocarbons (benz[a]anthracene, pyrene, chrysene, benzo[a]-pyrene, benzo[e]pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[j]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene) have been studied. Except pyrene and benzo[e]pyrene, all compounds investigated significant but different induction factors. The relevance of the induction for an estimation of the biological effect of environmental polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is discussed.
It is stated that a general final evidence is not yet possible from the existing results of immunological investigations and it may be possible only when taking into consideration the extensive furthering controls mentioned. On the basis of the therefore further existing uncertainty in the evaluation of the immunological valency of the cryotherapy, which is expressed also in literature, the originally optimistic suggestions concerning an increased immune response to the cryotherapy must be judged critically. Even when the clininically favourable courses after cryotherapy, above all in the treatment of the penis carcinoma, may be impressible--a cryospecific immune reaction was not to be proved by the test systems at our disposal.

The determination of papaverine in blood samples using a flame-ionization and a nitrogen-phosphorus detector is described. The method is quite simple and permits the determination of papaverine at blood levels at 5-500 ng/ml.
An electron microscopic study of normal bladder urothelium of elderly patients ranging in age from 61 to 82 years has shown the occurrence of unusually thin regions consisting of either one or two layers of undifferentiated cells interspersed between 3--4 cell layers thick regions. A morphometric study has confirmed the existence of a pattern of cytodifferentiation in cells of the thick region. The generally microvillous nature of the luminal surface is attributed to incompletely differentiated cells that have come to occupy the superficial layer. The lack of thickened and/or asymmetric membrane plaques in luminal plasma as well as the dearth of characteristic precursor vesicles in the cytoplasm are also explicable in terms of a failure of normal cell differentiation. It is suggested that the unusual features noted are consequences of tissue ageing rather than prognostic of cancer. There are indications that the aged urothelium may be prone to increased leakiness and the bladder tissues may therefore be at greater risk from urine-borne chemicals and carcinogens.
