Acute lymphoblastic leukemia--hand mirror cell variant: a detailed cytological and ultrastructural study with an analysis of the immunologic surface markers.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia was observed in a 22-year-old white female patient and was manifested by normal palelet counts, 50--60% hand mirror cells (HMC) in the bone marrow, and prolonged survival without treatment. The characteristic neoplastic cell had a nucleus within the "mirror" portion and a cytoplasmic uropod forming the "handle" portion. The presence of acid phosphatase and beta-glucuronidase activity suggested that the cell was a T cell lymphoblast. However, extensive immunologic surface marker studies indicated the cells were non-T, non-B. Terminal transferase activity further supported the lymphoid nature of the cell. The hand mirrow cells were considered a real phenomenon since they were demonstrated on phase contrast microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The cells did not grow in tissue culture and cytogenetics revealed a normal female karyotype. From the above observations, the HMC is a lymphoblast with morphological, cytochemical, and immunological features which may differentiate it from the usual cell in acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Therefore, cases involving increased numbers of hand mirror cells in the bone marrow and acute lymphoblastic leukemia require further investigation to elucidate the full importance of this cell. This study represents the first attempt to investigate this cell in detail.

Effect of fat supplementation on voluntary food intake and rumen metabolism in sheep.

1. In an experiment in which a high-fat supplement was given in the dry form to lambs offered dried grass ad lib., both the voluntary intake and digestibility of the dried grass were reduced. When the high-fat supplement was given in a liquid suspension so that the rumen was by-passed, the voluntary intake and digestibility of the dried grass were not significantly altered. 2. The effect of injecting an emulsion of tallow into the rumen of sheep on rumen metabolism was studied in another experiment. Increasing the fat supplementation lowered the rate of digestion of both dried grass and cotton thread, lowered markedly the concentration of rumen ammonia, and raised the proportion of propionic acid in the rumen.

Asymmetric septal hypertrophy in autopsies in men.

Asymmetric septal hypertrophy (ASH) was not identified in the 2,790 autopsies performed in a Veterans Administration hospital since 1958. Recent reports consider ASH to be a common cardiac disease in the diffuse form that has extensive myofiber disorientation. A retrospective study of 419 autopsies was undertaken to see if that diagnosis had been overlooked; but, in 100 autopsies with detailed photographic records of ventricular and septal size, ASH was not found. There were slight average increases in the posterior portions of the septum and right ventricle, and an average septal-left ventricular ratio of 1.1. Since neither staff pathologists nor consultants who reviewed entire hearts with cardiomyopathy noted features of ASH, we consider it to be a rare disease in elderly veterans.

Changes in the concentrations of urea, glucose and some mineral elements in the plasma of the ewe during induced parturition.

Four Finnish Landrace X Dorset Horn ewes were each given an intramuscular injection of 15 mg of dexamethazone on day 142 of gestation. Four ewes with the same fetal numbers were used as controls. Administration of the corticosteroid reduced the mean gestation length from 146-5 to 143-3 days and had no effect on the pre-lambing concentrations of Na, Cl, Ca P and Mg in the maternal plasma or on blood pH. There was a slight but significant (P less than 0-05) decrease in plasma K before lambing in the treated ewes. Plasma urea and glucose concentrations were not affected by treatment. There was a significant increase in the plasma concentration of glucose in both groups of ewes immediately after parturition.
