On the essential integration of nursing and informatics.

This paper asserts that nursing knowledge is fundamentally inseparable from the strategies and structures that represent it. Nursing informatics comprises a new disciplinary focus that results from a blend of nursing and informatics. The technologies of informatics, communications, computer science, decision science, human information processing, and knowledge engineering, provide critical care nurses with the support necessary for contemporary nursing practice. Informatics technologies enable nurses to communicate, process knowledge in new and more efficient ways, and better understand the nature of nursing thinking.

An integrated informatics curriculum in a baccalaureate nursing program.

As health care requirements change, nurses will not only have to process and communicate more information, but the nature and types of this information will dramatically change as well. It is imperative that nurses understand the potential information technologies offer to assist the nurse in this expanded role. This paper describes an innovative endeavor to incorporate information technology with its undergraduate nursing program. The challenge was to design a program that would help develop the students' skills to critically appraise their information needs and conceptually evaluate the utility of gathering information in providing patient care. After completing the first nursing informatics course, there was an increase in the students' perception and understanding of the uses of information technology to support the nursing process in providing patient care.

Collaboration in care and research.

This article focuses on psychiatric mental health nursing care and research, with particular attention to collaboration with other health professionals in the area of geriatric mental health. Various components of the NIMH Task Force on Nursing report and recommendations are emphasized. These include research focused on: (a) improving the understanding, treatment, and rehabilitation of the mentally ill; (b) preventing mental illness and promoting mental health; (c) continuous care of persons who are acutely or chronically mentally ill or who are at risk for mental illness; (d) therapeutic interventions with ill persons or those at risk; and (e) the design, implementation, and evaluation of new and existing models of care delivery. An illustrative model of research in geriatric mental health nursing is presented. Particular attention is given to collaborative relationships developed by the primary nursing research team and the nursing staff in an acute care setting, colleagues providing nursing home care, and physician colleagues in geriatric mental health, gerontology, and neurology. Strategies to enhance collaboration and develop collegial relationships for better patient care are presented.
