The evaluation of the mobile nylon bag technique for determining the apparent protein digestibility in a wide variety of feedstuffs for pigs.

Studies were conducted with four (50 to 70 kg) barrows to evaluate the mobile nylon bag technique (MNBT) for determining the apparent protein digestibility (AD) in a variety of feedstuffs. One-gram samples of each feedstuff, ground through a 1.0-mm mesh screen, were enclosed in nylon bags (25 X 40 mm; 48 microns mesh). Following predigestion (.01 N HCl; 4,000 Folin Intestinal Pepsin Units/liter), four bags of each sample were inserted into each pig via a duodenal T-cannula. The indigested contents were pooled within pig and feedstuff prior to crude protein analysis. The AD of each feedstuff was determined previously with four barrows according to the conventional method (CM), based on a 5-d total collection of feces following a 14-d adaptation period. The following results, AD (%), were obtained with the MNBT (n = 4) and CM (n = 4), respectively. Barley, 70.1 vs 81.2 (P less than .05); corn, 72.3 vs 82.1 (P less than .05); wheat, 79.6 vs 86.4 (P less than .05); corn gluten feed, 73.9 vs 70.9; rice bran, 57.3 vs 57.4; wheat middlings, 70.8 vs 79.4 (P less than .05); soybean meal, 89.9 vs 93.0; a mixture of soybean meal and hulls, 86.9 vs 88.8; coconut expeller, 65.0 vs 69.8; fababeans, 79.5 vs 78.5; peas, 87.6 vs 88.1; meat meal, 83.2 vs 84.0; complete diet (4.3% crude fiber), 76.3 vs 83.6 (P less than .05); and complete diet (13.6% crude fiber), 56.5 vs 55.0.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Intellectual development of phenylketonuria children treated early--a longitudinal study. 10 years' concomitant psychological study in The Netherlands].

Since 1st September 1974 almost all newborns in The Netherlands have been screened for phenylketonuria (PKU). Data collected between then and 1 October 1984 are presented, with respect to the intellectual functioning of 69 patients who received early treatment for PKU. Wherever possible, psychological testing was carried out at four key ages, namely 1.0 years, 2.0 years, 4.6 years, 6.6 years. The results of the tests revealed no differences in the mental levels of these patients and healthy children at any of the key ages. Also no sex differences at key ages 1 and 2 years related to this variable were found. The longitudinal course of the intellectual development in the first four and a half years was stable. The necessity for the continuation of screening and the collection of psychosocial data is discussed.

[Sedation and analgesia in interventions].

Children with leukemia have to undergo many times painful procedures like bone-marrow aspiration and lumbar puncture. For reduction of anxiety and pain sensation good psychological support can be an important help. Often sedative drugs are used, or even general anaesthesia may be necessary. There is a need of a safe, short-acting and effective medication. Among the different possibilities the intravenous or rectal administration of midazolam seems to be very promising.

Serum growth hormone and nitrogen metabolism responses in young bull calves infused with growth hormone-releasing factor for 20 days.

Intravenous infusion of growth hormone (GH)-releasing factor (GRF) sustains elevated serum GH for at least 5 days in young Holstein steers, but the effects of extended infusion of GRF on serum GH and nitrogen (N) metabolism have not been determined. Thirteen Dutch-Friesian bull calves (148 +/- 1.5 kg) were assigned randomly to receive daily either 0 or 3.6 mg GRF (hGRF1-44NH2; U-68420) in saline as a continuous infusion for 20 days. Calves were fed milk replacer twice daily while housed indoors in wooden-slatted floor box crates (metabolism cages). Nitrogen determinations were made on daily feed, feces, and urine samples which were pooled for days 9 to 14 of treatment. Concentrations of GH were quantified in blood samples collected at 20 min intervals for 8 hr on day 1, 10 and 20. The infusion of GRF increased baseline GH (P less than .07), the number of GH pulses (P less than .0001), the amplitude of the GH pulses (P less than .001), and area under the GH response curve (P less than .0002). Within GRF-infused calves baseline GH (P less than .0001) and area under the GH response curve (P less than .006) were greater on day 20 than on day 1 or 10 (day X treatment interaction, P less than .04). Area under the GH response curve was similar on each sampling day in saline-infused calves, but baseline GH was higher (P less than .03) on day 20 than either day 1 or 10. Infusion of GRF increased episodic GH secretion in spite of limited pulsatile activity in saline-infused calves.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Q fever in the Netherlands: a sero-epidemiological survey among human population groups from 1968 to 1983.

A sero-epidemiological survey, using an indirect immunofluorescence test for IgG against Coxiella burnetii (phase II), was carried out in the Netherlands. Serum samples taken in 1968, 1975, 1979 and 1983 were tested. Occupational groups with a supposedly high risk of infection (veterinarians, residents of dairy farms and taxidermists) showed a significantly higher percentage of seropositives than defined controls. The percentage of seropositive amateur wool spinners was significantly higher than that of the controls from the same region. Since 1968 there has been no increase in the percentage of infected persons, indicating that, contrary to earlier assumptions, Q fever has been endemic in The Netherlands for a long time already. The increase in numbers of notified cases of overt Q fever is considered to be the result of the recent introduction of a sensitive indirect immunofluorescence test for IgM antibodies against C. burnetii. Antibody percentages in all age classes between 1 and 64 years were much alike, suggesting that most infections occur in early childhood. This is in accordance with the finding that 35% of our patients are younger than 3 years. The possibility of infection related to childbirth and lactation is discussed.
