Risk factors for bladder cancer: a case-control study in northeast China.

A case-control study of risk factors for bladder cancer was carried out in Heilongjing Province, China. Between May 1989 and May 1990, 217 histologically confirmed cases of bladder cancer and 254 controls with non-neoplastic and non-urine system disease were recruited. Individuals were interviewed in the wards of six major hospitals. Controls were matched by sex, age and area of residence. Information was collected concerning economic status, occupation, histories of smoking and consumption of alcohol, use of tea, the taking of analgesics, dietary histories and previous diseases. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated from stratified analysis and conditional logistic regression models. Increased risk was observed with increasing times per year and number of years of saccharine use. Compared with non-users, the use of saccharine for more than 19 times per year, and for more than 15 years, the adjusted ORs were 3.9 (95% CI = 1.8-8.67) and 5.1 (95% CI = 2.3-11.6), respectively. Statistically significant associations were also found for diseases related to the urinary system (OR = 2.8; 95% CI = 1.1-7.6). Increased consumption of fruit and vegetable may reduce the risk of bladder cancer. Cigarette smoking had no effect on the risk of bladder cancer in both genders. There was no association between the consumption of alcohol or tea, or types of water supply, with bladder cancer risk.

Resistance to salmonellosis in the chicken is linked to NRAMP1 and TNC.

Natural resistance to infection with Salmonella typhimurium in mice is controlled by two major loci, Bcg and Lps, located on mouse chromosomes 1 and 4, respectively. Both Bcg and Lps exert pleiotropic effects and contribute to cytostatic/cytocidal activities of the macrophage. Bcg encodes for a membrane phosphoglycoprotein designated Nrampl (natural resistance-associated macrophage protein 1), which belongs to an ancient family of membrane proteins, Lps has not been cloned yet, but its location on mouse chromosome 4 has been refined for positional cloning. As in mice, chicken inbred lines differ in their susceptibility to infection with Salmonella typhimurium. We have tested the candidacy of the chicken homologs of Nrampl and Tnc (a locus closely linked to Lps), in the differential resistance of chicken inbred lines to infection with S. typhimurium. We have first analyzed six inbred chicken lines of Salmonella-resistant or Salmonella-susceptible phenotypes for the presence of nucleotide sequence variations within the coding portion of NRAMP1. We have identified 11 sequence variations within NRAMP1 in the chicken inbred lines tested: 10 of these represented either silent mutations or conservative changes. However, one G-->A substitution at nucleotide 696 resulted in the nonconservative replacement of Arg223 to Gln223 within the predicted TM5-6 region. This allelic variant was specific to the susceptible line C and not observed in any of the resistant strains. To investigate the effect of NRAMP1 and TNC on resistance to infection with S. typhimurium, 425 (W1 x C)F1 x C chicken progeny were examined during a period of 15 days postinfection. Together, NRAMP1 and TNC explain 33% of the early differential resistance to infection with S. typhimurium of parental lines C and W1. Our data established that resistance to infection with S. typhimurium in chickens is inherited as a complex trait and that comparative mapping has proven to be useful to identify Salmonella-resistance genes in the chicken.

Dynamic properties of the aorta and of the foot microcirculation in adolescents with diabetes mellitus.

To evaluate vascular function in diabetic subjects, we studied both the stiffness of the abdominal aorta and the foot microvascular reactivity in 22 diabetic adolescents and 18 controls. The aortic stiffness was significantly higher in diabetic females, but not in males, as compared to age- and gender-matched controls (p < 0.05). Foot post-ischaemic hyperaemia was lower in diabetic subjects than in controls (p < 0.05), while postural vasoconstriction did not differ between the groups. The microvascular reactivity did not correlate with the duration of diabetes, but seemed to be influenced by the insulin regimen. The degree of aortic stiffness and the microvascular reactivity of the foot were not significantly interrelated. Loss of aortic elasticity might be a long-term effect of diabetes, whereas microvascular reactivity seems to reflect the current influence of the metabolic state and insulin treatment.

[Image analysis of the microvascular permeability to various molecular weight of flucrescein in rat mesentery].

An intravital fluorescence microscopic method and digital image analysis were established for measuring the changes of fluorescein sodium (FINa, MW 376) and FITC-Dextrans (FD-4, MW4000, FD-150, MW150000) permeability in mesenteric microvessels. The transport of various molecular fluorescent tracer within the blood vessels and through the vessel walls into the perivascular tissue of the rat mesentery was studied using a highly sensitive CCD camera, the fluorescence intensities were transformed into video signals and recorded for subsequent analysis. The results showed that FINa could pass through the wall of microvessels very quickly. The diffusion constant was 3.362 x 10(-8) cm2/s with FINa, and FD-4 was 1.718 x 10(-8) cm2/s, FD-150 was 0.0486 x 10(-8) cm2/s. The diffusion constant depended very strongly on the molecular weight and showed no difference between capillary and vessels of the venous part of the microcirculation, but in vessels of the arterial part of microcirculation no diffusion was found. That was to say that diffusion occurred in capillary and microvenous, but not in microarterial. It is expected that this method would be very useful for the quantitive analysis in various molecular weights and in monolayer endothelial cell permeability.

[Hepaticocholangiochole cystostomy plus construction of subcutaneous tunnel of the gallbladder in the treatment of hepatolithiasis with bile duct stricture].

A novel operation was designed by using Hartmann's pouch of the gallbladder to anastomose stone-strictured intrahepatic bile duct while leaving the common bile duct and Oddis sphincter intact and fixing the fundus of the bladder subcutaneously. 28 patients with intrahepatic bile duct stones and strictures underwent the operation successfully, and recovered well. There were no postoperative complications such as reflux cholangitis or disturbances of GI tract.

[Commercial identification and resources survey on Chinese drug radix Ranunculi ternati].

Based on the collection of commercial products field investigation in distribution areas and main production places, and consultation of over 200 specimens the identification of traditional Chinese drug Maozhaocao was carried out. The results show that the present source of commercial "Maozhaocao" derives from 2 species of genus Ranunculus. The main species is Ranunculus ternatus, while R. polii is used only in a few regions. A resources survey of the drug was also conducted.

[Soft tissue profile changes following surgical correction for Chinese adults with maxillary protrusion].

The soft tissue profile response to anterior maxillary osteotomy for anterior maxillary excess patients was evaluated. Soft tissue change to hard tissue change ratios as well as linear regression equation were calculated from a patient pool representing fifteen anterior maxillary osteotomies. The soft tissue profile response to anterior maxillary osteotomy appeared to be predictable. The results led to the following abbreviated conclusion: posterior movement of subspinale was accompanied by posterior movement of 37% (r = 0.73) at subnasale, 63% (r = 0.87) at superior labial sulcus. Posterior movement of incision superius was accompanied by posterior movement of 75% (r = 0.86) at labrale superius.

[Bone mineral content and its influence factors of children aged 0-16 in a city and village].

The radial and ulnar bone mineral content (BMC) was measured by single-photon absorptiometry, and the effects of multiple independent variables on BMC and bone width (BW) were explored using multiple regression analysis in 332 rural and city children aged 0-16 years in Henan province from 1994 to 1995. BMC, BW, BMC/BW and forearm length increased with age increasing, and the BMC in city children aged 0-6 years was higher than that in rural children. Radial BMC was positively related to BW in the measured sites. Age, body weight and height (or length) all had significantly positive and independent effects on radial BMC in both groups. The positive correlation of radial BMC with age was observed, however, the ratio of radial BMC to body weight was negative correlation. The BW in measured site and forearm length increased with ages. After adjusted for body size, there were no significant effects of sex, age and body weight on radial BW except height (length). This study shows that overall body size rather than adiposity is the important factor for bone BMC, so that it is needed to consider several variables, for example, BMC, BMD, BMC/body weight and BMC/age.

[Investigation of fluorescence spectra of alum floc].

The sharp fluorescence peak of alum floc was observed at 340nm. The peak height at 340nm is in proportion to alum concentration under same degree of neutralization. There is similar regular change of this peak height as change of neutralization degree under different alum concentration.

[Study on the interaction of metal ion in active center of superoxide dismutase with cobalt chloride by visible spectroscopy].

The direct interaction of metal ion in active center of copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu2Zn2SOD) with inorganic cobalt chloride (CoCl2) in buffer has been first studied by visible spectroscopy. The effects of increasing amounts of CoCl2, changing pH,different acid salt and equilibrium time on the interaction have been discussed. It was found that the Co(II) of CoCl2 makes an exchanging interaction with Zn(II) in Cu2Zn2SOD and thus the partial Cu2Co2SOD is formed.

[Surface-enhanced Raman spectra studies on four complexes derived from D-glucosamine and alpha-glycine and their effect on DNA].

Raman scattering of four complexes derived from d-glucosamine and alpha-glycine and their effects on DNA were studied with surface-enhanced Raman spectra (SERS). It was found that their SERS had shown little difference for their similar structural. Their interaction abilities on DNA were poor according to the change of their SERS spectrun after adding DNA to their water solution except for Co(III)GluG, which has strong effect on DNA. NiGluG's adsorptive ability on Ag sol is the strongest among other three complexes.

Identification of a novel missense mutation in Wilson's disease gene.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the allelic heterogeneity of the ATP7B gene in Chinese patients with Wilson's disease (WD). METHODS: Exons of the ATP7B gene from 141 WD patients' DNA were amplified with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) 887-890. Mutations were then screened by single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis and further identified by sequencing. RESULTS: The molecular structure of exon 7 of the ATP7B gene from 141 WD patients was analyzed. The same band shift in electrophoretic pattern of 4 cerebral type patients was identified with SSCP and subsequently sequenced. The results showed missense mutation at the second base of the codon as Ser 662 Cys, which is caused by a C to G transversion. CONCLUSIONS: Mutations of the ATP7B gene were investigated for the first time in China and a novel missense mutation was identified in four cases.

[Relationship between umbilical blood lead level and neonatal neurobehavioral development].

Umbilical blood lead level, as an indicator for intrauterine exposure to lead, and neurobehavioral score, as an effect indicator, were determined in 101 neonates in Beijing area to explore the relationship between intrauterine lead exposure and neonatal neurobehavioral development. Results revealed that there was a negative relationship between neonatal umbilical blood lead level and their neurobehavioral score and behavioral ability. With umbilical blood lead level of 0.48 mumol/L as a cutoff value, there was a significant difference in neonatal behavioral ability score between groups of high and low blood lead levels. There also were significant differences in nonbiologically auditory and biological visual and auditory orientation reaction. It suggests that intrauterine lead exposure can cause adverse effects on neonatal neurobehavioral development, especially on their visual and auditory function.
