Relationship between hyperventilation and intracranial pressure in patients with severe head injury.

With high fatality rate and disability rate, the pathophysiologic changes of severe head injury are complicated. But the method of lowering intracranial pressure (ICP) through artificial hyperventilation is called in question recently. To understand the related changes of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in artery (PaCO(2)) and the ICP at the acute period of severe head injury, a total of 64 patients with severe head injury were monitored and analyzed on the 3rd day after injury.

[A study on the epidemiological characteristics and the preventive measures of rabies in Shanghai].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the epidemiological characteristics and the preventive measures of rabies in Shanghai from 1950 to 2000. METHODS: Suspected cases of rabies were investigated epidemiologically and collection of samples to isolate the virus. RESULTS: The most highest morbidity of rabies was 1.98/100,000 in 1950. There had been neither case of rabies, nor the rabies virus positive identified in dogs between 1958 and 1988. The morbidity of rabies was 0 - 0.03/100,000 from 1989 to 2000. According to the data of 20 reported cases from 1985 to Sept. 2000, the mean incubation was 66.37 days, except one case of 14 years. The mean course of diseases was 4.55 days. Seventy percent of the cases did not receive any preventive measure. A hundred and ninety-four persons who were bitten by rabies virus positive dogs were timely treated and all of them survived. In recent years, there has been more than 50,000 persons bitten by dogs every year in Shanghai. The rate of rabies vaccine immunization was over 95%. The rate of anti-rabies serum immunization was over 20%. CONCLUSION: Rabies is a preventable disease even when persons were bitten by dogs with rabies virus positive. The important measure is to treat the wound timely, giving vaccine and anti-rabies serum injection. According to the regulation of dog control in Shanghai, the number of dogs be kept at the lowest level, immunizing all the registration dogs, and destroying the none-registration dogs are the most essential measures to be taken.

[Study on the epidemiological feature and control measure for rabies from 1990 to 2000 in Jiangsu province].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the epidemiological feature of rabies and explore the risk factors in Jiangsu for the control of rabies. METHODS: Data on rabies in Jiangsu from Jan. 1990 to Sep. 2000, and on case studies as well as surveillance from 1998 to 2000, were collected. Circular distribution statistics and Chi-square test were used. RESULTS: The number of rabies had been decreasing since 1990 yearly, but increased in the last two years. The new cases of rabies tended to focus in the area of Nantong, Yanchen and Taizhou city. There were about 80% of cases in the above areas. Dogs were the main hosts (93.22%). Ninety-four point nine two percent of the persons were affected through dog bites with major wounded part as thoracic limbs (46.27%). Rates of severe bites, being wounded close to the central nervous system and more than 1 wound per cases were significantly higher than that in the population under surveillance. The antibody conversion rate was 86.28% after immunization in the surveillance population. The immunization rate was 58.20% among dogs. CONCLUSION: Severe deep bites, wounded part close to the central nervous system and more than 1 wound per case were the risk factors in patients with rabies. Maltreatment and low immunization rate were important risk factors as well.

[A simplified and quantitative method for culturing and isolating Legionella from air condition cooling waters].

OBJECTIVE: To establish simplified technique to investigate the distribution of Legionella from air condition cooling waters in a district in Shanghai. METHODS: Using simplified method to make GVPC agar plates; using candle jar to replace CO(2) incubator; initial identification was only relied on colony appearance but no growth on the blood agar plate; and a simple formula was used to quantify the Legionella in waters. RESULTS: From July 1997 to June 1999 in Luwan District Shanghai, the simplified methods were used to culture and isolate 185 Legionella strains from 371 water samples (47 fixed spots of hotels, markets, resident buildings, hospitals, subway stations, cinemas and stadiums), with a detection rate of 49.87% with highest at the subway stations (69.36%), which were significantly higher than repeated in the literature in this country and abroad. CONCLUSIONS: Simplified methods were established for culturing, isolating and quantifying Legionella. These methods had been used for 3 years to have got a high Legionella detection rate from the cooling waters. The high detection rate and quantity of Legionella in cooling waters of subway stations call for more attention to the fact that Legionellosis might exist in these waters.

Changes in the temporomandibular joint after mandibular lengthening with different rates of distraction.

This study assessed the changes in the condyle after mandibular lengthening with 2 different rates of distraction (1 mm/day and 2 mm/day). Unilateral mandibular distraction was performed in 8 young adult goats. The animals were sacrificed 8 weeks after the completion of distraction, and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) specimens were harvested and processed for histologic examination and histomorphometric analysis. Adaptive changes in the condyle were observed in the goats distracted at a rate of 1 mm/day, whereas degenerative alterations were found in those distracted at a rate of 2 mm/day. This study suggests that the TMJ is able to withstand the impact of distraction at a rate of 1 mm/day, but more rapid distraction may induce degeneration in the condylar cartilage.

[Study on expression of Fas/FasL and HBV antigens in liver tissue of patients with hepatitis B].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of apoptosis mediated by Fas/FasL in the liver of hepatitis B and the expression status of Fas, FasL, and HBV antigens. METHODS: We studied the expression of Fas antigen, Fas-ligand (FasL) and hepatitis B virus(HBV) antigens(HBsAg and HBcAg) in the livers of 62 patients with hepatitis B using immunohistochemistry ABC method. Six normal liver samples were used as control. RESULTS: Hepatocytes in normal liver had no Fas/FasL expression, but in the cases of hepatitis B, Fas was expressed mainly in the cytoplasm in 58 cases(93.5%); FasL was observed in infiltrating mononuclear cells and in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes in 37 cases (59.7%). The expressions of Fas/FasL were closely related to the liver histological inflammation degrees. CONCLUSION: The apoptosis mediated by Fas/FasL may play an important role in the hepatocellular injury in hepatitis B. No correlation was found between the degrees of Fas/FasL expression and the presence of HBsAg and HBcAg in the liver.

[Ultrastructural and Ca/P changes of the regenerated bone after mandibular distraction in goats].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the ultra structural and the changes of Ca/P elements of the new bone resulting from mandibular distraction osteogenesis. METHODS: Bilateral mandibular osteotomies were performed in six goats. The mandibles in all animals were lengthened 10 mm using a custom made distracter. Each 2 goats were sacrificed respectively at 2, 4 and 8 weeks after completion of distraction. The distracted callus were harvested and processed for SEM evaluation and Ca/P ratio analysis. RESULTS: The newly generated bone in distraction gap was confirmed by SEM examination, and the contents of Ca, P were found to be elevated with the maturity of distracted callus. CONCLUSION: This study suggested that newly formed bone by mandibular distraction osteogenesis in goats could be remodeled to normal bone.

[Determination of domoic acid in water and aquatic animals by high performance liquid chromatography].

The content of domoic acid in water and in the body of some aquatic animals was detected by HPLC in order to find out the pollutant condition. The result showed that HPLC analysis was a simple and effective method for determining domoic acid in water and aquatic animals. Domoic acid has been found in some marine shellfish and not in seawater or freshwater. It is necessary to strengthen monitoring the contamination of domoic acid to prevent the toxin poisoning.

[Clinical study on effect of recombinant roasted licorice decoction combined with low-dose glucocorticoids in treating idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical effect of recombinant roasted licorice decoction (RRLD) combined with low-dose glucocorticoids (GC) in treating idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). METHODS: Forty-three patients were divided semi-randomly into the treated group (n = 21) and the control group (n = 22), the former was treated with RRLD plus low-dose GC, and the latter was treated mainly with normal dosage of GC. RESULTS: The total effective rate of the treated group was better than that of the control group, the difference between these two groups was significant (P < 0.05). After treatment the platelet count in the treated group arose from (36.29 +/- 9.70) x 10(9)/L to (95.14 +/- 18.26) x 10(9)/L, while in the control group from (37.31 +/- 9.29) x 10(9)/L to (77.73 +/- 21.96) x 10(9)/L, the RRLD was superior to nat of GC in raising platelet count, the difference between them was also significant (P < 0.01). The treated group was lower obviously than the control group in adverse reaction (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The efficacy of RRLD plus low-dose GC is reliable in treating ITP, with less adverse reaction.

[The relationship between cell proliferation and apoptosis of vestibular epithelium in the developing guinea pig].

OBJECTIVE: The cell proliferation and apoptosis of vestibular epithelium in normal developing guinea pig were observed to elucidate the relationship and effect between proliferation and apoptosis in developing vestibular epithelium. METHODS: Twenty Guinea pigs with different developing ages were used in our studies. Cell proliferation was detected by proliferation cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunocytochemistry while apoptosis was detected by TdT-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate-biotin nick end labelling (TUNEL) method and transmission electro-microscopy. RESULTS: PCNA staining had been detected in supporting cells but not in hair cells, and the positive cells were gradually decreased with ageing. The differentiated hair cells and supporting cells underwent apoptosis in vestibular sensory epithelium, and TUNEL-positive cells were also markedly decreased with ageing. After birth, TUNEL-positive hair cells were located at the top of ampulla. CONCLUSION: During the development of guinea pig, cell proliferation as well as apoptosis events diminish contemporaneously. The balance between proliferation and apoptosis may regulate the normal number of cells, and is related to guarantee the normal structure and function of inner ear.

[Study on the direct interaction between alkaline phophatase and Cu(II) ions by spectral analysis].

In this paper, the results of EPR, VIS and enzyme activity show that alkaline phophatase from calf intrest directly interacted with additional Cu(II). The added Cu(II) enter into A site of active sites of AKP which decrease enzyme activity. With increase of pH value, the decrease in the intensity of the Cu(II) EPR signal and the change of place signal in VIS were observed. These results suggest that Cu(II) migrate in the active center of the enzyme.

[The characteristic infrared spectra of N-(2-phenyl-(1,2,3-triazole-formyl)-N'-arylthioueas].

The characteristic infrared spectra of N-(2-phenyl-(1,2,3-triazole-formyl)-N'-aryl)-thioueas have been studied and the changing rules with the change of chemical structure have been discussed. Specially, the effect of the characteristic infrared of long-range radical by different substitute is discussed in detail. Results show that characteristic bands of radical which as far as five radicals away form substitute group are still affected. It is very suggestive meaning for long-range spectra research.

[The structures and characteristic infrared spectra of beta-DDB and its derivatives].

The characteristic infrared bands of the 3, 4-methylenedioxy-5-methoxybenzoate, 6-Br-3, 4-methylenedioxy-5-methoxybenzoate, beta-DDB (6, 6'-dimethoxy-4, 5, 4', 5'-dimethylenedioxy-2, 2'-dimethoxycarbonylbiphenyl) and its five derivatives were assigned. The effects of the substituents of these compounds on their IR data were discussed. The results indicated the varying of ester alkyl mainly influences the C=O double band stretching mode, but has little effects on the C=C double band stretching mode of the phenyl. When the H atom was substituted by other substituents, the absorptions of the C=O and C=C both changed.
