Water intake after stomach loads of NaCl in Mongolian gerbils.

Sixty mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus), 30 male and 30 female, were stomach loaded (2% b.w.) with either water or .9, 2, 6, 10, or 12% NaCl (wt x vol.). Unlike male rats, male gerbils did not lose weight. Female gerbils, like female rats, did not lose weight. However, female gerbils did not increase their water intake at any concentration, whereas males increased their water intake only at the 10 and 12% levels. These data are very much unlike those for the rat (male and female) which show an increase in water intake in response to NaCl solutions above isotonicity.

Genetic and phenotypic parameters of lifetime production traits in Holstein cows.

Canadian Record of Performance data of 51,599 Holstein cows freshened first between 1958 and 1965 were used to evaluate genetic and environmental aspects of production and longevity traits. Traits were adjusted for age at first calving and for average and last calving intervals by partial regression coefficients derived from these data. Heritabilities and phenotypic and genetic correlations then were estimated from paternal half-sister analyses of 138 sires representing 5 genetic time-trend groups. Within herd-year-season heritabilities (and standard errors) were: first lactation 305 day milk .22 (.03); first lactation 305 day fat yield .25 (.03); first lactation herd-year deviation milk .22 (.02); first lactation herd-year deviation fat yield .24 (.03); last lactation 305 day milk .14 (.02); last lactation 305 day fat yield .16 (.02); last lactation length .06 (.01); lifetime milk .11 (.02); lifetime fat yield .12 (.02); milk per day of productive life .21 (.02); fat per day of productive life .25 (.03); culling age .10 (.01); length of productive life .10 (.01); and number of lactations completed .09 (.01). Genetic correlations of first lactation yield with lifetime production ranged from .34 to .93 and with longevity traits from .41 to .47. Genetic correlations between lifetime production traits ranged from .43 to .96 and between longevity traits were greater than or equal to .99. Genetic correlations of first lactation milk with lifetime milk (.56) and milk per day of productive life (.93) indicate that continued selection on first lactation milk is an effective means of maximizing lifetime milk and milk per day of productive life.

Sodium and chloride in cows' drinking water and freezing point of milk.

The study was in two dairying regions of British Columbia, Canada, 700 Holstein-Friesian cows in 10 herds, to examine sodium and chloride in the drinking water of cows and to relate these to the composition of milk and to its freezing point. The Peace River had more sodium and more variation between herds in natural water supplies, which usually derive from surface dugouts, whereas the Fraser Valley region draws its water from mountain reservoirs. There were associated differences in the sodium content of milk between the two regions. These did not result in any regional differences in the freezing point of milk and there were no detectable changes in the chloride and lactose contents of milk to compensate for the higher sodium. The relationships between concentrations of milk lactose and milk chloride on the one hand and milk freezing point variations on the other were as expected.

Locked-in syndrome caused by a tumor.

A case of locked-in syndrome is described. Clinical and radiologic evidence suggested the presence of a brain-stem tumor. Autopsy showed that the patient had a reticulum cell sarcoma. This is the first reported case of locked-in syndrome caused by a tumor.

Atypical pneumonia in the critically ill obstetric patient.

The critically ill obstetrical patient is a challenging complex case for today's critical care nurse. Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, identified this emerging patient population and developed a collaborative multidisciplinary program to provide positive outcomes for these patients. The following case study illustrates the components of the program and its usefulness in providing individualized care for a particular critically ill obstetrical patient.

Restructuring a competency-based orientation for registered nurses.

A competency-based orientation is an orientation program that focuses on a new employee's ability to actually perform the expectations of his or her role in a particular setting. It differs from a traditional model in which the focus is on the cognitive knowledge necessary for the role. The authors will identify key elements educators may consider when evaluating such a program. The process used by the author's organization to evaluate and restructure the competency-based orientation program for registered nurses is also described.
