Maternal oral contraceptive use and atopic diseases in the offspring.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the association of maternal oral contraceptive (OC) use - before and after birth - and atopic manifestations in the offspring. METHODS: A total of 2754 East German children aged 5-14 years participated in a cross-sectional survey in 1998-99. The standardized parental questionnaire in 1998-99 included data on atopic diseases, socio-economic factors, parental atopy and maternal OC use. Specific immunoglobulin E against common inhalant allergens was measured by radioallergosorbent test (RAST). RESULTS: Maternal OC use before birth was associated with a higher risk of atopic diseases in the offspring compared with children of mothers who had never taken OC [asthma: odds ratio (OR) 1.6; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.9-3.0; allergic rhinitis: OR 1.5; CI: 0.96-2.2; atopic eczema: OR 2.6; CI: 1.6-4.3; atopic sensitization: OR 1.5; CI: 0.97-2.2]. However, the effect estimates for maternal OC use after birth compared with the never users showed quite similar effects for these atopic conditions. No relations were observed between the prevalences of atopic diseases and maternal age at beginning of OC use, the duration of OC use, the type of contraceptive or maternal age at birth. CONCLUSION: This study raises doubts in a true biological association between OC use and atopic diseases.

Trends and predictors of overweight and obesity in East German children.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood overweight and obesity seem to be increasing at an alarming rate throughout the Western world. During the 1990's, tremendous socioeconomic changes have taken place in East Germany, and studies about the prevalence and trends of childhood overweight and obesity in Central Eastern European countries are rare. Therefore, we analyzed trends in overweight and obesity in East German school children. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: We examined 5- to 7-y-old school entrants, 8- to 10-y-old third graders and sixth-grade school children aged 11-14 y in three consecutive surveys performed in 1992-93, 1995-96, and 1998-99 in Eastern Germany. In total, we received 7611 questionnaires. Information about height and weight was available for 6650 children. RESULTS: Overweight and obesity showed a significant increasing trend for 11- to 14-y and 8- to 10-y-old children but not for the school entrants aged 5-7 y. After adjustment for age, sex, season and area, the risk of being overweight in 1998-99 compared to 1992-93 was 1.6 (CI 1.4-1.9) and 1.9 (CI 1.4-2.5) for obesity, respectively. Low birth weight and higher parental education were protective factors for overweight and obesity. Breast feeding was protective with regard to obesity. This effect was stronger if the children were exclusively breast-fed. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, our data provide further evidence that the prevalence of overweight and obesity increases. These results might suggest that preventive actions should start as early as possible and children from disadvantaged families might be considered as a susceptible subgroup.

Early endotoxin exposure and atopy development in infants: results of a birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to endotoxin in childhood is currently discussed to protect from the development of allergic diseases. OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of early endotoxin exposure on incidence of atopic sensitization, atopic dermatitis and wheezing until the age of 2 years in infants with different risk status in terms of parental atopy. METHODS: Data of 1942 infants of an ongoing birth cohort study were analysed by logistic regression. Endotoxin was measured in settled dust of the mothers' mattresses at infants' age of 3 months. Data on allergic symptoms and physicians' diagnoses were gathered by questionnaire. Sensitization to common food and inhalant allergens was assessed by specific serum IgE. RESULTS: High endotoxin levels increased the risk of repeated wheeze [adjusted odds ratio (OR) for 4th exposure quartile (Q4) 1.52, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.08-2.14], but were associated with neither sensitization to food allergens nor atopic dermatitis. Stratification by parental atopy showed that there was an association of endotoxin exposure with incidence of repeated wheeze as well as with sensitization to inhalant allergens (P for trend = 0.008 and 0.044, respectively) only in infants with parental atopy, with the highest risk in the 4th exposure quartile (repeated wheeze: ORQ4 1.77, 95% CI 1.14-2.73; sensitization to inhalant allergens: ORQ4 1.69, 95% CI 0.70-4.11). CONCLUSION: Early endotoxin exposure in terms of mattress dust endotoxin levels seemed to increase the risk of atopic reactions to inhalant allergens at the age of 2 years, especially in infants at risk due to parental atopy. Our data disagree with an early protective effect of endotoxin on atopy development until the age of 2 years.

Intake of unsaturated fatty acids and HDL cholesterol levels are associated with manifestations of atopy in adults.

BACKGROUND: The increase in allergic diseases is still unexplained. It was hypothesized that the intake of unsaturated fatty acids is a contributing cause of this development. We investigated the relationship between serum cholesterol levels, intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and manifestations of atopy in a population-based setting. METHODS: A nested case-control study was performed within the population of the 3rd MONICA survey in Augsburg (Germany). The serum levels of total, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol of 1537 adults (aged 28-78 years, response 61.4%) and the estimated intake of PUFA in a subset of 139 men were compared with the frequency of a doctor's diagnosis of asthma, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (AR), atopic eczema (AE) and allergic sensitization as measured by skin prick and Radio Allergo Sorbent Test. FINDINGS: In bivariate analyses, we obtained a negative linear association between total and LDL cholesterol levels and the frequency of AR and sensitization, which was no longer significant after adjustment for important confounders. In contrast, positive linear associations were found between HDL cholesterol levels and AR and AE and, furthermore, between the intake of PUFA and allergic sensitization in men (P<0.01). After adjustment, an increasing risk for atopic diseases with increasing levels of HDL cholesterol and an increasing risk for allergic sensitization with increasing intakes of PUFA remained statistically significant. INTERPRETATION: There is indication that HDL cholesterol also plays a role in the complex interaction of fat intake, metabolism and the manifestation of atopy in adults. These findings may contribute to the understanding of time trends and regional differences of allergies.

Repeated measurements of allergens and endotoxin in settled house dust over a time period of 6 years.

BACKGROUND: Studies investigating the effect of exposure to indoor allergens and endotoxin on human respiratory health usually take dust samples only at one single point of time and consider them to be representative for the indoor biocontaminant burden during a time period of several years. This singly measured biocontaminant concentration is related to adverse respiratory outcomes such as asthma, wheeze or others. OBJECTIVE: We analysed two repeated measurements of mite and cat allergens in mattress and living room floor dust as well as endotoxin concentrations in living room floor dust. The repeated samples were taken over a time period of about 6 years. We investigated the repeatability over time of their concentrations by determining correlation coefficients and computing within- and between-home variance components. METHODS: Our analysis was based on the population of a study on Indoor Factors and Genetics in Asthma (INGA) being carried out in 1995/96 and followed up in 2000/01. Complete data were available from 152 participants. RESULTS: The measured allergen concentrations were low and a considerable percentage of the values was below the limit of detection. The crude Spearman's rank correlation coefficients between the two measurements taken in 1995/96 and 2000/01 ranged from 0.32 to 0.61 for the dust mites allergens, from 0.21 to 0.44 for cat allergen and from 0.35 to 0.51 for endotoxin. Correlations were higher if measurements were performed on the same floor or the same mattress at both sampling time-points. The within-home variance for all measured biocontaminant concentrations was of about the same order as the between-home variance. CONCLUSION: For studies like ours with low allergen and endotoxin concentrations, the repeatability of these concentrations over a time period as long as 6 years is low and a single measurement does not accurately reflect the true long-term exposure in the homes.

Nonallergic respiratory morbidity improved along with a decline of traditional air pollution levels: a review.

The tremendous decline of combustion-derived emissions of traditional air pollutants such as sulphur dioxide (SO2) and total suspended particles (TSP) in Eastern Germany shortly after German reunification in 1990 provided the unique opportunity to study trends of prevalence of respiratory illness along with the improvement of air quality. The present review focused on the results of two repeated surveys of nonallergic respiratory illness in children living in East Germany. The crude prevalence of respiratory illness such as lifetime bronchitis, otitis media, tonsillitis, frequent colds, and frequent cough decreased during the 1990s in East German children. For two surveys the effect estimates showed consistently statistically significant association of TSP with bronchitis. For SO2 statistically significant associations with frequent colds were also consistently found, whereas at least one survey reported higher statistically significant effect estimates for tonsillitis, otitis media, frequent cough and reduced forced vital capacity. The present study concludes that the prevalence of nonallergic respiratory illness in East German children is associated with sulphur dioxide and total suspended particles and that the improvement of air quality has beneficial effects on respiratory health.

Weight gain in two adult cohorts in East and West Germany reunification.

BACKGROUND: Several epidemiological studies have shown consistently higher prevalence rates of obesity and overweight in East German adults compared to West German adults before German reunification in 1990. If different lifestyle factors after German division contribute to these differences, one might speculate that trends of obesity and overweight in the East and West after German reunification in 1990 would be similar. OBJECTIVE: To examine weight gain in East and West German adult cohorts in the decade after German reunification. METHODS: The study population includes 554 individuals with complete data aged 20 - 47 years in 1990-92 participating in the ten year follow-up of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) in the German centres Hamburg (West) and Erfurt (East). Age and occupation-adjusted prevalence and incidence rates, stratified for gender and centre, were calculated for the Erfurt and Hamburg cohorts. RESULTS: The prevalence of overweight increased in males and females in both cities, and was statistically significant for Hamburg males (32.7% to 44.9%), Hamburg females (12.3% to 25.4%) and Erfurt females (18.5% to 31.2%). The increase in the prevalence of obesity was statistically significant for males (Hamburg: 3.7% to 7.9%; Erfurt: 5.2% to 10.8%) and for females only in Hamburg (6.4% to 14.2%). The increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity were larger in Hamburg than in Erfurt. Moreover, the incidence rates of obesity were higher in Hamburg for both sexes, but were not statistically significant CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate different patterns of weight gain in 2 study sites in East- and West-Germany. These results might reflect a convergence of initially higher prevalences of overweight and obesity in the East with initially lower prevalences in the West.

Vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae type b and atopy in east German schoolchildren.

INTRODUCTION: Although routine childhood immunisations are known to prevent severe diseases there is an ongoing discussion on possible side effects in later life. In this paper we investigated the association of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)-vaccination and atopic diseases and allergic sensitisation in children in Eastern Germany. METHODS: From 1998-1999 a cross-sectional survey of school children aged 5 to 14 years on long-term health effects of air pollution was conducted in three regions of Eastern Germany. Atopic outcome was defined by parental reporting of wheezing and doctor's diagnosed asthma (including asthma-like bronchitis), hay fever and eczema. Specific serum IgE against 5 aeroallergens were analysed by RAST-technique. Vaccination status was assessed by vaccination records from the respective local health authorities. Analysis is restricted to 1943 children with complete information on age, gender, place of residence, parental education and 1676 children with available blood data. RESULTS: Lifetime prevalence were 4.9% for asthma, 21.1% for wheezing, 6.6% for hay fever, 11.4% for eczema. 32% of the children had at least one specific IgE RAST>0. Hib-vaccination coverage was 42 % overall, 93 % in 5-7 yr olds, 59 % in 8-10 yr olds and 11 % in 11-14 yr olds. Odds Ratios adjusted for age, gender, place of residence, and parental education were 1.86 (1.05-3.32) for asthma, 1.55 (0.95-2.54) for hay fever, 1.03 (0.70-1.50) for eczema and 1.25 (0.94-1.67) for at least 1 specific IgE RAST>0. CONCLUSION: We found little evidence for an association between Hib-vaccination and some atopic outcomes and causality cannot be ascertained. Our findings do not give sufficient support to question the value of Hib vaccination given the substantial contribution of mass immunisations to public health. Specific research on possible long-term effects of vaccines is needed to enable final conclusions on this topic.

Practicability of magnetoencephalography-guided neuronavigation.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a noninvasive option for localizing electroneurophysiological activity on the human cortex. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practicability and reliability of MEG imaging integrated into a neuronavigation system to identify the sensorimotor cortex intraoperatively in patients with brain tumors in or near the central motor strip. It was performed prior to surgery in 30 patients with space-occupying lesions in or around the central region to localize the primary somatosensory cortex. These functional brain maps were superimposed on MR images obtained prior to surgery and transferred in the operating room for intraoperative functional neuronavigation. During surgery, the phase reversal technique identified a generator which coincided with the somatosensory cortex as displayed by the MEG-based functional neuronavigation system. Following surgery, the motor deficit improved in seven patients, was unchanged in five, and showed a slight transient deterioration in five. One patient suffered a deterioration of motor function with incomplete recovery. The MEG-based functional neuronavigation was found to be practicable and useful in finding a safe approach to tumors in or adjacent to the central region. The accuracy of MEG was concluded to be reliable as verified by the phase reversal technique.

Allergic sensitization owing to 'second-hand' cat exposure in schools.

BACKGROUND: Environmental allergen loads play an important role in triggering symptoms in atopic individuals. While a number of previous studies have shown that cat allergens (Fel d 1) can be found in school dust samples, no study has provided evidence that public places contribute to increased atopic sensitization rates in children. METHODS: We employed data collected in a health survey of school children living in Germany in order to examine the association between the proportion of class- and schoolmates reporting cat contact and sensitization rates in children. RESULTS: Among 1893 children, 8.7% were sensitized to cats. Those sensitized were 5-7 times more likely to have received an asthma diagnosis or to have reported wheezing. Pupils without regular contact with cats were twice as likely to test positive for major cat allergen when the proportion of schoolmates with cat contact was high. No such relation was observed amongst children reporting regular cat contact. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that allergens in school environments contribute to allergic sensitization and atopic diseases such as asthma. Thus, methods to reduce the allergen load in classrooms should be considered.

Predictors of high endotoxin concentrations in the settled dust of German homes.

Endotoxin concentrations in settled house dust were measured within the collaborative study named INGA (Indoor Exposure and Genetics in Asthma) together with other asthma-related indoor factors in 405 randomly selected homes in two German cities. Endotoxin was assayed using the quantitative kinetic chromogenic Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) method. The mean concentration of 2,274 ng endotoxin/g dust in living rooms is about two orders of magnitude below mean occupational exposure (e.g. agriculture). Endotoxin concentrations are higher in old buildings (means ratio = (MR) 1.52, 95% C.I.: 1.14; 2.04), and in the lower storey of the dwelling (MR = 1.30, 95% C.I.: 1.04; 1.62). Furthermore, higher endotoxin concentrations are associated with longer occupancy in the apartment (MR = 1.63, 95% C.I.: 1.21; 2.18), high utilisation of the apartment during the sampling period (MR = 2.52, 95% C.I.: 1.42; 4.47), infrequent vacuum cleaning of the carpets (MR = 1.67; 95% C.I.: 1.10; 2.54), an indifferent attitude to ventilation (MR = 1.37; 95% C.I.: 1.03; 1.82), keeping cats (MR = 1.91; 95% C.I.: 1.43; 2.55) and dogs (1.57; 95% C.I.: 1.08; 2.30), as well as the occurrence of mice (MR = 1.39; 95% C.I.: 1.00; 1.93). The season and indoor climate (operative temperature and relative humidity) did not effect endotoxin concentration. These results indicate that high endotoxin concentration in settled dust is an indicator of poor hygienic conditions in homes.

T cell reactivity in neonates from an East and a West German city--results of the LISA study.

BACKGROUND: Within an ongoing birth cohort study (LISA) the cytokine production of cord blood T cells was compared between neonates from Leipzig (East Germany) and Munich (West Germany). The aim of this study was to analyse regional differences and influencing factors of the immune status. METHODS: Cytokine production was measured in a randomly selected subgroup of 158 children from the LISA (Life style - Immune system - Allergy) cohort by intracellular cytokine staining. Information on family "atopy" history (FAH) and home characteristics was obtained from questionnaires. RESULTS: Reduced numbers of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) producing T cells were found in association with biparental FAH and housing renovation during pregnancy. In addition, cytokine production was influenced by season. In Munich, the frequency of biparental FAH and of renovation measures during pregnancy was significantly higher as compared to Leipzig. Neonates from Munich showed significantly decreased amounts of IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha and elevated levels of interleukin-4 (IL-4) producing T cells. Differences in cytokine production between Munich and Leipzig were influenced by season (IL-4) and housing renovation (IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha). CONCLUSIONS: Since differences in the T cell cytokine production of neonates in Munich and Leipzig are independent from FAH our findings may provide evidence for the impact of environmental factors upon the fetal immune system.

Association of the GPIa C807T and GPIIIa PlA1/A2 polymorphisms with premature myocardial infarction in men.

Aims Recent studies have reported an association between the platelet glycoprotein (GP) Ia C807T polymorphism and myocardial infarction, whereas other studies have reported contradictory results concerning the platelet GPIIIa PlA1/A2 polymorphism. In most of these studies the patients were older than 45 years. Thus we decided to examine both genotypes in 287 men who had their first myocardial infarction before age 45, and a group of 138 healthy controls. Methods and Results The frequency of T807 allele carriers was similar among myocardial infarction patients and among controls (54.6% vs 62.3%; odds ratio (OR) 0.73; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.47-1.12). The frequency of PlA2 carriers was higher in cases than in controls (26.5% vs 15.2%; OR 1.65; CI, 1.09-2.54). After performing a logistic regression analysis, taking into account other cardiovascular risk factors, this difference did not remain significant. The combination of the risk alleles of both genotypes had no major effect on the myocardial infarction risk. Conclusions The GPIIIa PlA2 allele is not independently associated with the risk of premature myocardial infarction. The T807 allele of the GPIa gene alone or in combination with the PlA2 allele had no major effect on premature myocardial infarction risk.

[European Community Respiratory Health Survey in Adults (ECRHS)].

The European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) was the first study to assess the geographical variation in asthma, allergy, and allergic sensitization in adults using the same instruments and definitions. The database of the ECRHS includes information from approximately 140 000 individuals aged 20 - 44 years from 22 countries. The aim of this review is to summarize the results of the ECRHS and to present the specific contribution of the German centers in Hamburg and Erfurt. The prevalence ranged from 2.0 - 11.9 % for asthma, 9.5 - 40.9 % for allergic rhinitis, 4.0 - 32.0 % for wheeze, 3.4 - 27.9 % for bronchial hyperreactivity, and 16.2 - 44.5 % for allergic sensitisation against common aeroallergens. Although the prevalence of these atopic disorders were found to be consistently higher for the Hamburg center compared to the Erfurt center, strong regional differences in the prevalences were also found within several other European countries. Overall Europe, the lowest prevalences were seen in the Eastern and Middle European countries with the center Erfurt, followed by the Mediterranean region. The highest prevalences were reported for all English speaking centers. Strong geographic variation was reported for medication for asthma. Asthma seems to be undertreated in several countries. Environmental exposures and in particular indoor factors, and exposures at the workplace are playing a major role for asthma in adulthood. Furthermore, protective effects on atopy were found for exposures to pets (dogs) and a large number of siblings in early childhood. In conclusion, the ECRHS has shown that the prevalence of asthma varies widely. The fact that the geographical pattern is consistent with the distribution of atopy and bronchial responsiveness supports the conclusion that the geographical variations in the prevalence of asthma are true and likely due to environmental factors.

[Social inequalities and distribution of the environmental burden among the population (environmental justice)].

The paper deals with the following question: How are the environmental risks distributed across different social groups? Using the term 'environmental justice', it has been discussed in the USA for more than 15 years already that environmental risks are not distributed evenly (i.e., justly). Public attention concentrates on the high environmental burden of the black community, but differences by social status are also addressed. In Germany, there is as yet no comparable discussion. In order to contribute to its development, we focus mainly on the following topics: empirical data from Germany on socio-economic differences in environmental risks concerning the home and the home environment, combination with the discussion on environmental justice, recommendations for research and health policy. The results indicate that also in Germany the lower status groups are exposed to greater environmental risks, and that regional measures of health promotion provide a good chance of reducing this inequality.

[Environmental surveys in the areas of Bitterfeld, Hettstedt and a comparative area in 1992-2000].

The aim of the environmental epidemiological study was to determine possible adverse effects on the health of children in the environmentally polluted areas of Bitterfeld and Hettstedt compared to the less polluted area of Zerbst (Eastern Germany). The changes of the health parameters were recorded together with the environmental changes during the time period of 6 years. The study design consisted of three repeated regional cross-sectional studies in 1992/93, 1995/96 and 1998/99. In total, 7,611 questionnaires could be analysed (participation rate: 89%, 75% and 75%). Children living in the most polluted area of Hettstedt had a noticeable higher risk for non-allergic respiratory diseases and symptoms compared to children living in the control area of Zerbst. From 1992 to 1999 a statistically significant decrease in the prevalences of these health outcomes was found. Children without indoor pollutants in their homes had the greatest benefit by the improvement of ambient air quality. The increase in lung function (FVC, FEV1) also underlines the improvement of the respiratory health. Children living in the polluted areas reported allergies more often (physician's diagnosis, allergy specific antibodies). The prevalence of asthma, the bronchial hyperreactivity and atopic eczema was increased within the observational period of 6 years. An increased prevalence was also shown for more severe allergic sensitisation (RAST classes > 17.5 kU/l), while the prevalence of hay fever increased slightly on a non-significant level. The burden with lead and cadmium was higher in children living in polluted areas and decreased during the study period except for 1997 where the lead concentration in blood increased according to the higher lead concentration in settled dust in Hettstedt at that time.

Trends in prevalence of atopic diseases and allergic sensitization in children in Eastern Germany.

Trends in prevalence of atopic diseases and allergic sensitization in children from Eastern Germany during the 1990s were analysed. The study consisted of three regional cross-sectional surveys of a total of 7,632 children (aged 5-14 yrs) in 1992-1993, 1995-1996, and 1998-1999. Information was gathered on atopic diseases and potential predictors by a parental questionnaire. Allergic sensitization for birch, grass, mite, cat, and cladosporium were assessed by radioallergosorbent test (RAST). After adjustment for age, sex and the study area of the participants, prevalence increased between the first and third survey for hay fever, for asthma and for atopic eczema. The adjusted prevalence of allergic sensitization (RAST > 0.35 kU x L(-1)) showed a decrease, whereas the prevalence of strong sensitization (RAST > or = 17.5 kU x L(-1)) increased significantly, specifically in cohorts born after 1989. Further adjustment for possible determinants of these atopic diseases did not change the trend estimates. A clear increase in the prevalence of atopic diseases, with the exception of hay fever, was observed as well as a shift towards a stronger allergic sensitization, which might affect the onset of clinical manifestations of atopic diseases. Differences in the epidemiology of respiratory symptoms, illnesses and allergies between populations living in the former East Germany and those living in the former West Germany have been reported. Among East German children, lower prevalence rates of asthma, and positive skin-prick tests were observed compared to West German children in the early 1990s. Similarly, among East German adults, lower specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E levels and lower prevalence rates of asthma, wheezing, positive methacholine-challenge tests, allergic rhinitis, and positive skin-prick tests have been reported compared to those of West German adults.

Traffic-related air pollution and respiratory health during the first 2 yrs of life.

As part of an international collaborative study on the impact of Traffic-Related Air Pollution on Childhood Asthma (TRAPCA), the health effects associated with long-term exposure to particles with a 50% cut-off aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 microm (PM2.5), PM2.5 absorbance, and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were analysed. The German part of the TRAPCA study used data from subpopulations of two ongoing birth cohort studies (German Infant Nutrition Intervention Programme (GINI) and Influences of Lifestyle Related Factors on the Human Immune System and Development of Allergies in Children (LISA)) based in the city of Munich. Geographic information systems (GIS)-based exposure modelling was used to estimate traffic-related air pollutants at the birth addresses of 1,756 infants. Logistic regression was used to analyse possible health effects and potential confounding factors were adjusted for. The ranges in estimated exposures to PM2.5, PM2.5 absorbance, and NO2 were 11.9-21.9 microg m(-3), 1.38-4.39 x 10(-5) m(-1), and 19.5-66.9 microg x m3, respectively. Significant associations between these pollutants and cough without infection (odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval (CI)): 1.34 (1.11-1.61), 1.32 (1.10-1.59), and 1.40 (1.12-1.75), respectively) and dry cough at night (OR (95% CI): 1.31 (1.07-1.60), 1.27 (1.04-1.55), and 1.36 (1.07-1.74), respectively) in the first year of life were found. In the second year of life, these effects were attenuated. There was some indication of an association between traffic-related air pollution and symptoms of cough. Due to the very young age of the infants, it was too early to draw definitive conclusions from this for the development of asthma.
