Binding of Triton X-114 to mammalian serum albumins at critical micelle concentration.

When the nonionic detergent Triton X-114 binds to different mammalian serum albumins, remarkably little variation occurs in the number bound at the critical micelle concentration of the detergent. Average molar ratios range from 4.0 to 6.3; mean body weights range from 0.25 to 600 kg. Measured values of the extinction coefficients reported here also show remarkably little variation. These results support the view that the folding of these serum albumins is similar.

Progressive coxa valga after childhood excision of the hip abductor muscles.

To our knowledge, progressive coxa valga, femoral anteversion, and hip subluxation after surgical resection of soft tissue tumors of the gluteal muscles have not been described. The importance of this paper is to document proximal femoral deformity and hip subluxation in children after tumor resection of the hip abductor muscles, to provide guidelines for diagnosis and management of this problem, and to avoid late complications of progressive joint incongruity. Late deformity was seen in two cases after limb salvage surgery for a soft tissue buttock tumor. In both cases, the gluteus medius and minimus muscles were completely resected and the tensor fascia lata and gluteus maximus were partially resected. The ages of the patients at initial treatment were 4 months old and 5 years old, and both patients were followed for a minimum of 4 years. Valgus deformity was seen as early as 15 months. One patient has had a varus osteotomy to correct severe coxa valga and hip subluxation; the other patient with moderate deformity is being followed clinically and radiographically.

Ewing's sarcoma in a patient with congenital optic atrophy.

PURPOSE: The authors report Ewing's sarcoma in a patient with congenital optic atrophy. Congenital optic atrophy is an autosomal dominant disorder with variable expression. It manifests itself within the first decade of life and is accompanied by changes in visual acuity. This condition has not been known to cause a predisposition toward malignancy. PATIENT AND METHODS: In this article, a 16-year-old girl with dominant optic atrophy and Ewing's sarcoma is described. RESULTS: After tumor resection, the patient was successfully treated for Ewing's sarcoma with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Today she has no evidence of malignancy. However, she continues to have deterioration of her visual acuity. CONCLUSION: This report of cancer in a child with dominant optic atrophy suggests the possible need for a higher degree of suspicion of malignancy in these patients.
