Clinical Trials as Topic↗

Institutional sources of articles published in the American Journal of Nursing, Nursing Outlook, and Nursing Research.

To identify institutions in which scholarly productivity in nursing is occurring, all articles appearing in American Journal of Nursing, Nursing Outlook, and Nursing Research from 1963 to 1977 were tabulated according to institutional affiliation of author, geographic location of institution, and highest degree obtained by the author. More than half of the 5,560 articles appeared in AJN, and more than half were written by authors in the Mid-Atlantic and North Central areas by the U.S.A. Fifty-eight percent of the articles were written by nurses with at least a masters degree. There were 32 institutions in which at least 20 articles originated during the 15 years studied. The three top-ranking institutions, according to number of publications, were University of Washington, University of California at San Francisco, and the University of California at Los Angeles. The findings revealed that publications in AJN, NO, and NR originated in a large number of institutions and that there were few institutions in which large numbers of articles originated.

Sleep behaviors of older persons.

A pilot study with 22 subjects was done to test instruments and refine methodology for a study of the nature of sleep behaviors among older persons of various ages. Then, mailed questionnaires were completed and sleep charts kept for two weeks by 212 healthy, noninstitutionalized subjects, aged 65 to 93. These subjects were randomly selected from a pool of potential research subjects compiled from voter registration lists. The self-reported sleep behaviors showed extreme variability, even among subjects of the same age groups. Using chi-square and a confidence level of .05, data were analyzed for age differences. Findings showed a significant increase in time in bed, total sleep time when naps were included, number and amount of naps, and number and amount of wake time after sleep onset after age 75. After age 85 there was a significant increase in sleep latency, an increase in total sleep time even when naps were excluded, and a change to an earlier bedtime. It was concluded that changes in sleep behavior are to be expected as age advances.

Institutional sources of articles published in 13 nursing journals, 1978-1982.

The purpose of this study was to identify institutions in which scholarly productivity in nursing is occurring. All articles appearing in 13 nursing journals intended for a general nursing audience during 1978 through 1982 were tabulated according to institutional affiliation of author, geographic location of institution, and highest degree obtained by the author. More than half of the 3,792 articles appeared in American Journal of Nursing, Nursing, and RN, and 56.1% originated in the North Central and Mid-Atlantic areas. Nurses wrote 76.7% of the articles, and nurses with at least a master's degree wrote almost two thirds of those articles. There were 32 institutions in which at least 15 articles originated during the 5 years studied. Twenty-one of the 32 top-ranking institutions offer doctoral programs in nursing. The four top-ranking institutions, according to number of publications, are the Universities of Washington, Pennsylvania, California at San Francisco, and Michigan.
