Pain in the knee in children: the medial plica shelf syndrome.
The medial plica shelf syndrome as a clinical entity should be added to the list of differential diagnoses as a possible cause of symptoms of internal derangement of the knee in children. It most frequently mimics chondromalacia of the patella and indeed may lead to it. It can be clinically suspected in the presence of the signs described in this report. The condition can be diagnosed early and accurately by arthroscopy and thereafter treated satisfactorily, with minimal morbidity. The results of such treatment not only have been gratifying over the period of follow-up (five to 32 months), but in all probability have prevented further serious damage to the knee.
Ethyl alcohol by the oral route as a sedative in dentistry.
The history and social use and misuse of alcohol have been reviewed. Alcohol is an effective mild sedative drug for dental therapy when used in suggested dosage, and its use is encouraged. Guidelines and contraindications for administration have been suggested.
Total disappearance of cell proliferation in the lens of a hypophysectomized animal: in vivo and in vitro maintenance of inhibition with reversal by pituitary factors.
Cell cycle kinetics of lens epithelium were studied in frogs following hypophysectomy, and subsequent replacement therapy with bovine growth hormone (bGH). Hypophysectomy led to a complete absence of cells in DNA synthesis and mitosis within 4 weeks. A small number of G2 nuclei was present in all preparations, but the number was much reduced with time after surgery. Occasional preparations with a significant G2 population were encountered. The major block to cycle traverse appeared to be in the G0-G1 segment. Mechanical injury to the lenses of hypophysectomized animals caused the cells to move closer to S without, however, reaching it. The in vivo block to cycle traverse persisted in organ-cultured lenses maintained in medium containing serum of hypophysectomized animals. The block to cycle traverse was reversed when the lenses were cultured in medium containing the serum of hypophysectomized animals that received replacement therapy with bGH. The serum became effective between 1 and 2 days after the star of replacement therapy. The lens epithelial cells from hypophysectomized frogs incur a deficit such that a protracted prereplicative phase is detected when favourable growth conditions are restored.

Central components of the renin-angiotensin system.
1. Re-establishment of renal blood flow after total renal ischaemia of 4 h duration causes a pressor response in pentobarbitone anaesthetized rats and cats.2. The pressor response is related to the release of renin from the ischaemic kidney.3. Spinal section at any cervical level or stellate ganglionectomy abolishes the pressor response but spinal section caudad to the thorax or vagotomy and treatment with hexamethonium have no effect.4. Spinal section and stellate ganglionectomy interfere with the release of renin and with the pressor response to angiotensin.
