[Formation of nitrosamines in cheese products].

Several strains of micromycetes used as fermentation agents in the cheese industry or having led to accidents during cheese making are able to favor the formation of nitrosamines in 60% of the cases. The concentrations observed are similar to those found by other authors with other microorganisms. The results obtained in a semi-synthetic medium are checked during the ripening of experimental camembert type cheese made from milk containing nitrates and cultured with a strain of Penicillium camemberti, which favors very much the synthesis of nitrosamines. The amount of nitrosodimethylamine formed in this cheese increases from 5 to 20 ppb during ripening. A tentative explanation of the mechanism of formation is outlined.

Geniculate neuralgia and audio-vestibular disturbances due to compression of the intermediate and eighth nerves by the postero-inferior cerebellar artery.

A compression of the intermediate, cochlear and vestibular parts of the VIII nerve by a redundant loop of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) was found at autopsy in a patient who suffered during 21 years of geniculate neuralgia associated with tinnitus, hypoacousia and occasional dizziness. The relationship of arterial cross compression to geniculate neuralgia and audio-vestibular disturbance is discussed.

Primary aberrant third nerve regeneration.

The clinical and neuroradiological features in 4 patients with the syndrome of aberrant regeneration of the third nerve are presented. In contrast to what is commonly seen, the syndrome was not preceded by third nerve palsy. A petrous apex-cavernous sinus meningioma was the underlying lesion in all 4 patients. Surgical and pathological confirmation of the diagnosis was obtained in 3. Regardless of whether the other ocular motor nerves are spared (as in our patients) or involved (as in other cases reported in the literature), primary aberrant regeneration of the oculomotor nerve appears to be characteristic of a cavernous sinus meningioma.

The transsphenoidal surgical approach to the pituitary.

The operating microscope and intraoperative fluoroscopic monitoring have converted this approach from a blind procedure into a precise operation that permits selective (as well as nonselective) resection of pituitary tumors, often restoring function to normal or near-normal levels. Experience with the technique has also shed new light on the pathophysiology of acromegaly, Cushing's disease, and hyperprolactinemia.

Short-term toxicity of allyl alcohol in rats.

Groups of 15 male and 15 female rats were give 0 (control), 50, 100, 200 or 800 ppm allyl alcohol in the drinking water for 15 weeks. There were no effects attributable to allyl alcohol in the results of the haematological examinations or analyses of serum. There was a dose-related reduction in the fluid intake at all treatment levels in both sexes, while growth and food consumption were reduced in both sexes given 800 ppm and in males give 200 ppm. Males given 100 ppm or above and females given 200 or 800 ppm produced less urine than the controls in a period without water or following a water load. The only changes in organ weight that could be attributed to treatment were increased values for the relative weights of liver, spleen and kidney. All 3 organs were affected in both sexes given 800 ppm and the kidneys were also affected in both sexes given 200 ppm and in females given 100 ppm. No effects attributable to allyl alcohol treatment were seen at autopsy or in the histopathological examination. The no-untoward-effect level established in this study was 50 ppm of the drinking water, a level equivalent to an intake in rats of between 4.8 and 6.2 mg allyl alcohol/kg/day.

Long-term toxicity studies of chocolate brown HT in mice.

Groups of 48 male and 48 female mice were given diets containing 0 (control), 0.01, 0.1 or 0.5% Chocolate Brown HT for 80 weeks. There was a slightly reduced body weight gain and a lower heart weight in males given the highest dietary level. At the same level at week 77 the packed cell volume and total leucocyte count values in females were lower than those of the controls. However, the relationship of these findings to the treatment was questionable, as was the increased incidence of leucocytic infiltration of the liver in the female mice at the 0.5% level of treatment. A brown coloration of internal organs seen at the highest treatment level was due probably to the Chocolate Brown HT. The distribution of tumours was similar in all groups and it was concluded that there was no evidence of a carcinogenic effect with doses up to 700 mg/kg/day while the no-untoward-effect level was greater than 140 mg/kg/day.

Long-term toxicity of diethyl carbonate in mice.

Groups of 48 male and 50 female mice were given drinking-water containing 0, 50, 250 or 1000 ppm diethyl carbonate for 83 weeks. There was no effect on mortality, rate of body-weight gain or the incidence of histopathological findings, including tumors. There were isolated differences between treated and control mice in the findings of the haematological examinations and in the liver weights of female mice but these were not considered to be related treatment. It is concluded that no carcinogenic effect could be detected and that the no-untoward-effect level is 1000 ppm (approx. 140 mg/kg/day).

Contribution of trigeminal and facial reflexes to the localization of Vth, VIIth, and VIIIth cranial nerve dysfunction.

After a review of electrophysiological studies in 1,500 cases concerning different types of lesions of the trigeminal nerve, the acousticofacial complex, and the brain stem, one can conclude that beside the intensive clinical examination which most often allows a precise topographic diagnosis, study of trigeminofacial and facial reflexes appears to be an essential diagnostic method to determine the topography of the lesions. On the other hand, this study can sometimes contribute to the prognostic evaluation as well as the choice of the approach in some lesions concerning the acousticofacial complex.

Identification of human anterior pituitary cells by immunoelectron microscopy.

An attempt was made to classify human pituitary cell types by electron microscopic immunohistochemistry. The immunoperoxidase technique involving the use of the peroxidase-antiperoxidase complex was applied to thin sections of human pituitaries removed surgically for breast cancer or diabetic retinopathy. Using specific antibodies against human PRL, GH, beta-FSH, beta-LH, beta-TSH, and porcine ACTH, the localization of each hormone was studied. Identification of 5 human pituitary cells was possible: 1) The PRL-secreting cell contains round or slightly ovoid secretory granules of a diameter of 275-350 nm. 2) The GH-secreting cell is densely granulated with granule diameters ranging from 350-500 nm. 3) The gonadotrophic cell, which stains for both beta-FSH and beta-LH, is characterized by the presence of a varying number of secretory granules ranging from 275-375 nm. 4) The cortico-lipotrophic cell has numerous granules of about 375-550 nm in diameter. 5) The TSH-secreting cell contains small secretory granules of about 125-200 nm in diameter. Another cell type of which the small secretory granules of about 100 nm in diameter could not be stained by any of the antisera was also observed. This ultrastructural identification of human pituitary cells should contribute to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of the human pituitary.

Forces applied by nasal speculums during transsphenoidal operations.

The forces exerted by nasal speculums were measured during the transsphenoidal approach to the pituitary. The highest forces were found to occur at the beginning of surgery when the speculum had been spread to the desired opening (reaching 42 kg). This force decreases during surgery due to the time dependent motion of the biological structure distant from the applied pressure (relaxation). The amount of relaxation that occurred was measured but was found not to be high enough to indicate damage to the tissues adjacent to the speculum. It is also concluded that this type of instrument was underdesigned for its intended function.
