The role of lipoproteins in the distribution of tin etiopurpurin (SnET2) in the tumor-bearing rat.

The role of plasma lipoproteins in the distribution of the photosensitizing agent tin etiopurpurin (SnET2) was examined in male rats bearing the N-[4-(5-nitro-2-furyl)-2- thiazolyl1bdformamide-induced tumor. Treatment with 17 alpha-ethinyl estradiol resulted in the depletion of total plasma cholesterol by > 70% and a corresponding decrease in plasma lipoproteins. To both control and estradiol-treated animals, a therapeutic dose (1.5 mg/kg) of SnET2 was administered and biodistribution measured 24 h later. Estradiol treatment was not associated with differences in the distribution of SnET2 to liver, skin or tumor, or in the pattern of affinity of SnET2 to plasma albumin and lipoprotein. These results indicate that a substantial decrease in circulating lipoprotein levels does not alter patterns of SnET2 biodistribution.

Inhalation anaesthetics--exposure and control during veterinary surgery.

Results are reported for air sampling surveys carried out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in 14 veterinary surgeries. For all personnel the geometric mean (GM) time-weighted average (TWA) exposures to halothane and nitrous oxide over the working period were 2.6 ppm (range: less than 0.5 119 ppm) and 100 ppm (range: 14-1700 ppm), respectively. Since surgery rarely lasted for more than 4 h the corresponding GMs for 8-h TWAs were lower, being 1.3 ppm (range: less than 0.5-34 ppm) for halothane and 34 ppm (range: 5-530 ppm) for nitrous oxide. The GM exposures of veterinarians and nurses were very similar. The size of the practice and the use of scavenging were significant factors in determining personal exposures to inhalation anaesthetics: by comparison general ventilation had little effect. The results are compared with earlier data from human surgery, and previous studies of exposure to inhalation anaesthetics during veterinary surgery are briefly reviewed.

Radioiodination of proteins in single polyacrylamide gel slices. Tryptic peptide analysis of all the major members of complex multicomponent systems using microgram quantities of total protein.

A method is described for radioiodination to high specific activity of fixed and stained proteins within sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels, without elution of the proteins from the gel. Following radioiodination, the proteins can be removed from the gel by trypsin treatment and the peptides analyzed. This procedure offers a means to structurally compare the proteins of multicomponent systems when purification of each component to homogeneity is unfeasible. Using this technique, we have compared the tryptic peptides of all the major protein components of Moloney and Rauscher leukemia viruses using only 50 to 100 microgram of total protein from each virus. Additionally, we have analyzed the membrane proteins of Dictyostelium discoideum at various stages in development. The validity of the technique and its value as a tool for comparative studies and identification of precursor-product relationships is discussed.

Children's articulatory and auditory awareness of differences between vowel sounds.

Thirty-four normal 4th grade children were asked to nonverbally describe tongue positions for American vowels in terms of tongue height and tongue advancement. The same children then rated all pairs of vowels in terms of perceptual-similarity. Results indicate that children are unable to provide an articulatory description of vowels in terms of conventional phonetic descriptors, but they perform in an adult-like fashion when they perceptually sort out differences in vowel quality perceived auditorily between paired vowels.
