An Ultrasound technique for the measurement of tardive dyskinesia.

A simple and portable ultrasound system, using a transducer attached to a pair of spectacles, to measure disorders of facial movement is described and applied to the measurement of tardive dyskinesia. Product-moment coefficients of correlation for the split-half and test-retest assessments of reliability in 20 patients were 0.96 and 0.93 respectively. Concurrent validity was confirmed by assessing the consistency between ultrasound scores and time-sampled scores based on video films (Pearson r = 0.86). Serial measurements of tardive dyskinesia over five months revealed striking individual consistency.

Quantitative scintigraphy of sacroiliac joints: effects of age, gender, and laterality.

The effects of age, gender, and laterality on sacroiliac/sacral ratios obtained during quantitative joint imaging were assessed in 97 nonarthritic control subjects. For the entire group, the right sacroiliac-to-sacral mean ratio of 1.27 in 54 males was significantly higher (p less than 0.02) than the right mean ratio of 1.18 in 53 females. In both genders the right joint ratio tended to be higher than the left in all age groups. The difference in mean ratio between the two joints was wider for males than for females. The age did not affect the joint ratio in either gender. It is concluded that the range of normal sacroiliac-to-sacral ratios are different for males and females and should be taken into account during a quantitative sacroiliac joint imaging examination.

Child guidance as perceived by foster parents and social workers --a research note.

A brief report of findings from a regional study into the conflict and confluence between the attitudes of foster parents and social workers on children's developmental characteristics points to the need for greater discussion of guidance issues between these groups and further research into the nature and effects of their perceptual differences.

Alveolar multiplication in the contralateral lung after unilateral pneumonectomy in the rabbit.

Four weeks after left pneumonectomy in 10-week-old rabbits, the right lung increased in weight and volume to match the weight and volume of both lungs in control and sham-operated rabbits. Alveolar multiplication occurred in the right lung of the pneumonectomized animals resulting in approximately 60 per cent more alveoli than in the right lung of the control or sham-operated animals. Alveolar size was the same in all animals. The total number of alveoli in the right lungs of the pneumonectomized animals was almost identical to the calculated number of alveoli in both lungs of the control animals.
