[Intracerebral calcifications. Etiology and symptomatic (author's transl)].

The importance of x-ray-investigations of skull is demonstrated in ten remarkable examples. Mostly intracerebral calcification follows inflammatory, traumatic, neoplastic or metabolic disease. In spite of the simplification of contrast-investigations which have assumed great importance x-ray-films of skull often permit specific diagnostic assessment and therefore should be done first.

Contrast variation study of specifically deuterated Escherichia coli ribosomal subunits.

A neutron small-angle scattering analysis has been done on partially deuterated 30S and 50S subunits of Escherichia coli ribosomes by the contrast variation method. The results indicate that the central regions of both particles are RNA-rich whereas their exteriors are protein-rich. The segregation of RNA and protein is much greater in the 50S subunit than in the 30S; the 30S subunit approaches a homogeneous mixture of RNA and protein. In both structures the most probable separation between the centers of mass of their protein and RNA distributions is small, although substantial variation of this parameter is possible within experimental error.

Shape of the 50S subunit of Escherichia coli ribosomes.

Extrapolation of a series of low-angle neutron scattering curves to infinitely high contrast gives a scattering function IC(kappa) which is dependent on the shape of the solute molecule. For the 50S subunit of E. coli ribosomes, the first part of the structure determination by neutron scattering, namely the determination of the molecular shape from IC(kappa), is reported. The result is in good agreement with models of the 50S subunit determined by electron microscopy.

[Kearns' syndrome (author's transl)].

Kearns' syndrome, a rare cause of chronic progressive ophthalmoplegia was observed in three patients aged 15 to 54 years. Apart from the chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia the syndrome consists of retinal changes and cardiac conduction defects in all cases, as well as other signs indicating damage to the nervous system. High tone deafness and vestibular damage as well as an increase in CSF protein are common. Endocrine disorders and skeletal anomalies may occur. The cause is unknown. The ophthalmoplegia may be of neurogenic origin. Adams-Stokes attacks following disturbances of cardiac rhythm may be prevented by timely implantation of a cardiac pacemaker.

[Serodiagnosis of malaria (author's transl)].

Homologous and heterologous malaria pathogens were used as antigens for the determination of malaria antibodies by indirect immunofluorescence. Homologous antibodies fell in the second half year, after successful treatment, down to the limit of demonstrability. In inhabitants of endemic malarial areas, who lived in the German Federal Republic, signs of a fall in antibodies could be observed after about 30 months. The predominance of particular malaria pathogens of the country of origin was recognizable in the antibody spectrum of these persons. Malaria antibody findings of three comparable groups of exposed persons under chemoprophylaxis ought to provide pointers to the parasitemias which had occurred and which were held responsible for the antibody production. Persons without chemoprophylaxis from malarial areas served as controls. The markedly deviating results of the antibody findings in the serum donors can only be explained by more seldom parasitemias in persons with adequate chemoprophylaxis.

New low resolution model for 50S subunit of Escherichia coli ribosomes.

Neutron low angle scattering studies of the 50S subunit of E. coli ribosomes with the contrast variation method reveals large fluctuations in the scattering density. A region of relatively low scattering density, rich in proteins, surrounds an RNA-rich core of higher scattering density. The centers of mass of the RNA and protein parts of the 50S subunit are separated by a distance (20 A) that is considerably smaller than that reported in previous studies.

Effectiveness of single doses of Fenbendazole Hoe 88I against Ascaris, hookworm and Trichuris in man.

Fenbendazole (Hoe 881) 5-(phenylthio)-2-benzimidazolecarbaminicacidmethylester in doses of 1-0 g and 1-5 g per person were effective against Ascaris and gave substantial egg count reductions against hookworm (mainly Necator americanus). The 1-5 g dose gave good results against Trichuris. In a trial with a suspension of Hoe 881 with a high specific surface of 25 m2/g there was no advantage over tablets with a specific surface of approximately 8 m2/g. Two doses of 500 mg given with an interval of 24 hours were no more effective than one dose of 1-0 g. In a comparative trial using Hoe 881 1-5 g, Pyrantel 10 mg/kg and placebo respectively Hoe 881 showed equal potency against hookworms and Acsaris as Pyrantel and good effectiveness against Trichuris. Pyrantel showed only moderate activity against Trichuris in this trial.

[Treatment of schistosomiasis haematobium with metritionate in OPD-patients (author's transl)].

40 patients--5 to 50 years of age--voiding eggs of Schistosoma haematobium in their urine--underwent treatment with Metrifonate at the OPD of Bong Mine Hospital, Liberia. The patients received 10 mg/kg body weight 3 times at a fortnight's interval. The drug was swallowed under medical supervision. 27 patients no longer passed eggs after the 1. dose of Metrifonate, 37 no longer voided eggs after the 2. administration. 1 patient did not show up for control after the 3. dose. Theoretically he may not be healed. 1 other patient who came for control after 12 months had been exposed to reinfection and again voided eggs in her urine. She had been negative after the 2. treatment. Reinfection may have happened. Patients could be controlled over a period of 6-14 months. Thus, Metrifonate seems to be an effective drug in the treatment of urinary schistosomiasis. Side-effects (nausea, abdominal pains, and--very rare--vomiting) were mild and disappeared spontaneously within less than 24 hours after medication. Patients did not have to interrupt school, daily activities, and treatment. Statistically, Metrifonate did not show any influence on transaminase SGOT, SGPT, and LDH during and after the course of treatment. The same evaluation applies to eosinophilia. There is no increase or decrease of this particular type of cell during and after treatment 7 patients showed alterations of their ECG curves. There were changes of the T-wave in V1-4. In adults traces were normal again several months after completion of treatment. It seems to be difficult to interpret ECGs in West African youngsters. X-ray photos of the lungs never revealed any pathological findings which could be connected to the course of treatment. Metrifonate seems to be a valuable drug in treatment of Schistosoma haematobium-infection. The drug is well tolerated if the treatment scheme--mentioned above--is used.
