Hematologic study of newborn umbilical cord blood.

Hematological parameters in newborn umbilical cord blood samples (n = 476), collected at the Hospital Provincial del Centenario, Rosario, were studied. They were divided into 3 groups: (I) full term newborns with weight according to gestational age; (II) low weight and normal gestational age; (III) preterm newborns. The results were as follows: group (I) Hb: 15.5 +/- 1.1 g/dl; RBC; 4.66 +/- 0.33 x 10(12)/l; PCV: 49% +/- 4.3%, MCV 105.1 +/- 5.3 fl; MHC: 33.2 +/- 1.2 pg. Decreased Hb concentration (p < 0.05) and increased MCV (p < 0.01) were observed in preterm newborns in comparison with normal ones, and a slight PCV increase and RBC values in low weight newborns compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Erythrocyte morphology was normal as well as reticulocyte values in these samples. The electrophoretic pattern was (FA) with the following Hb F values 66.3 +/- 6.8%, and Hb A2 0.45 +/- 0.3% in group (I), with a significant increase of Hb F in 30-35 weeks preterm newborns. Group (I) values are considered as normal hematological parameters in newborns in our country, whereas MCV < 94.7 fl is considered as a neonatal microcytosis marker, consequently an alert to investigate alpha-thalassemia. There was no influence on Hb concentration due to maternal smoking habit. The present work could be of relevance for our region since up to the present time there are no similar records.

[The glomerular mesangium: a new perspective on its structure and function].

OBJECTIVES: The present study describes a new approach to the structure and function of the renal glomeruli, distinct from the traditional concept of structural support and in relationship with the alterations detected in this area in different diseases. METHODS: The structural and ultrastructural observations in the renal glomerulus reported elsewhere were compared with our own findings in different animal experiments. Furthermore, the biochemical and functional results from these studies are presented. RESULTS: Our observations in vivo corroborate the findings reported by other authors and support their hypotheses on the possible myofibroblastic nature of the glomerular mesangial cells and the relationship of the renal mesangium with the glomerular capillaries in areas with no glomerular basement membrane. CONCLUSIONS: The glomerular mesangium is shown to be a fundamental structure for glomerular hemodynamics by regulating the different properties of the mesangial cells and the role of the mesangial matrix in plasma ultrafiltration by processing its different components and preventing their deposition in this area.

Platinum complexes of p- and m-aminobenzamidine. Synthesis, characterization, and cytotoxic activity.

Four platinum(II) aminobenzamidine complexes have been prepared and characterized by IR and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and tested for their ability to interact with the nicked and closed circular forms of the pUC8 plasmid DNA. The results show that the complexes of formula [Pt(LH)2Cl2]2X have a cis- geometry with an amino-Pt bonding, where L is either p- or m-aminobenzamidine and where 2X is 2Cl- or PtCl4(2-). It was observed that these complexes significantly alter the electrophoretic mobility of nicked and closed circular forms of DNA and that the alteration in electrophoretic mobility due to Pt(II)-p-aminobenzamidine binding is higher than that due to Pt(II)-m-aminobenzamidine. No difference in mobility was observed whether the DNA interacted with complexes having as counteranion Cl- or PtCl4(2-). The synthesized compounds were, in addition, assayed for antitumor activity in vitro against colon (CX-1), lung (LX-1), and mammary (MX-1) human tumor cells. The results show that these complexes inhibited the multiplication of the tumor cells and that they show higher specificity for lung cells.
