A morphometric and comparative study of the malleus.

This study has attempted to research, in detail, the dimensions and form of the malleus, and to indicate possible differences with regard to race, sex and side of origin (left or right). The ossicles were obtained from 75 adult cadavers and the dimensions were determined with the aid of a reflection microscope. Clear statistically significant differences were found between the Negroid and Caucasoid races, as well as between the right and left ossicles. No meaningful differences were determined between male and female ossicles.

Course and relationships of the arteria maxillaris.

The course and relationships of the arteria maxillaris in the left and right infratemporal fossae were examined by means of dissection of 49 South African Negroid cadavers. Eighty-nine specimens of the infratemporal fossae were used. The results were classified according to six variations and were compared to existing findings on Europeans and Asians. In some categories there were significant differences between the Negroid group and the white groups with which it was compared, while in other categories there were no significant differences.

The aqueductus vestibuli--a morphological study.

The morphology of the aqueductus vestibuli enjoys considerable attention as it may possibly play a role in the cause of Ménière's disease. In this study, silicone rubber casts of human temporal bones were used, and the aqueductus vestibuli was then measured by means of a reflection microscope. By this method the morphometry of the aqueductus vestibuli was determined accurately.

[By his letters shall the doctor be known].

The furnishing of information by doctors who refer patients to a hospital, be it by telephone or by letter, is of the greatest importance. Unfortunately, there are a great many doctors who underestimate the value of this serious responsibility towards the patient and as a result provide no or insufficient data.

Endoscopic transnasal dacryocystorhinostomy.

The rigid Hopkins endoscope has been applied to simplify the operation of dacryocystorhinostomy, preventing unnecessary trauma to the medial orbital tissues. The success of the surgical technique is absolutely dependent on a thorough knowledge of the relevant surgical anatomy.

A silicon rubber cast of the cavities in the temporal bone as a teaching aid in human anatomy.

A technique is described for producing a more flexible cast of the cavities in the temporal bone for teaching purposes. Instead of using rigid polymers to produce the model with all its inherent disadvantages, silicon rubber is used. It has the advantage that the cast is easier to produce, it is more robust when handled, and teachers can bend portions of the model to demonstrate underlying structures.
