ANnomalous duplication of inferior oblique muscle.

During an operation for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, an anomalous right inferior oblique muscle was found incidentally in a 59-year-old woman. The patient showed no muscle imbalance and had no clinical history of muscle imbalance. The anomaly consisted of parallel muscles (apparently originating from a common origin) inserting separately into the sclera. No other muscle anomalies were noted.

Use of a new oral analgesic, propiram fumarate, in treating postoperative ocular pain.

Fifty hospitalized patients with moderate to severe ocular pain after retinal surgery were treated with the new, potent, oral analgesic, propiram fumarate. Most patients received total daily doses of 50 to 100 mg for one or two days. Pain relief obtained was excellent or good in 92.7% of the observations. Patient and physician acceptance was 96% and 92%, respectively. Only one side effect was seen. Our overall experience was propiram was favorable.

Bilateral metastatic endophthalmitis.

A case of bilateral metastatic endophthalmitis secondary to Staphylococcus aureus urinary tract infection is presented. Systemic antibiotic therapy was used to treat the bilateral and endophthalmitis. Anterior chamber and vitreous aspirations as well as later enucleation of the fellow eye confirmed the diagnosis of S. aureus endophthalmitis. The case is most unusual in that the patient developed a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in one of the involved eyes. The detachment was successfully repaired, and the patient has maintained useful visual acuity.
