The opportunistic yeast Malassezia pachydermatis is commonly recovered from both normal and diseased skin of warm-blooded animals. The diversity of M pachydermatis isolates obtained from a wide range of hosts was investigated by the partial sequencing of the large subunit (LSU) ribosomal RNA. Among 100 isolates examined, seven types (Ia-Ig) were discriminated on the basis of nucleotide sequence diversity. The seven types differed by one to five mutations, all of them corresponding to transitions. The predominant sequence, type Ia, appeared to be ubiquitous since it was observed in isolates recovered from domestic and wild carnivora, from a monkey and from man. In contrast the sequence types Ic, Id and Ig seemed to be more host-specific; they included isolates recovered exclusively from rhinoceros, dogs and ferrets, respectively. None of the seven sequence types correlated with isolation from healthy skin or a particular lesion (otitis externa or other dermatitis). The study indicated that the skin of an animal may be colonised by more than one type of M pachydermatis.
A case is reported in a 9-year-old Anglo-Arab horse with guttural pouch mycosis caused by Emericella nidulans. Acute death occurred by exsanguination following erosion of the external carotid artery. Histopathological examination of the mycotic plaque demonstrated septate hyphae, conidial heads, hülle cells and mature cleistothecia containing characteristic ascospores. Specific identification was confirmed by culture. In accordance with previous reports, Emericella nidulans should be considered as the major agent of guttural pouch mycosis in Equidae.
Cultivation of Pneumocystis carinii from rabbit onto cell monolayers was intended. Three cell types were used: rat lung derived cell line L2 and canine kidney derived cell line MDCK, and primary epithelial rabbit lung cells derived from 20 days old foetuses. These primary cells were also immortalized by transfection of the coding sequences for the large and small T antigens of the SV40 virus. P. carinii were extracted from lungs of corticoid treated young rabbits and were purified on Ficoll. In vitro development of P. carinii was assessed by counting the number of attached parasites on cells after staining. No development was observed on L2 nd MDCK cell lines. On the contrary, a development was observed on rabbit derived cells with a threefold increase of attached parasites on the third day of culture. Immortalized cells allowed also multiplication of attached P. carinii. These results are similar to those obtained with culture of rodent P. carinii onto cell monolayers.

"Somatic" and "metabolic" antigens prepared from A. farinae and T. casei mites in Auvergne cheese were used for experimental immunisation: the hyper-immune serums obtained permitted 11 to 21 precipitant systems to be distinguished. An enzymatic activity could be identified on certain arcs. Research into antigenic communities showed the existence of 1 to 3 arcs common to the mite antigens, but none with the antigens obtained from the Penicillium cyclopium and Mucor fuscus moulds accompanying the mites. The results obtained thus facilitate an epidemiological investigation among the cheesemakers.
