Antibodies to DNA in 14 month old male NZB/W F1 mice were markedly decreased after 4 weeks of cyclophosphamide therapy. A group of these mice and untreated controls subsequently received levamisole for 12 weeks. Antibodies to DNA returned to pretreatment levels within 8 weeks in animals receiving only cyclophosphamide, whereas levamisole treatment after cyclophosphamide delayed the reappearance of these antibodies. Glomerular immunoglobulin deposition and the degree of lymphocytic tissue infiltrate were decreased in animals receiving cyclophosphamide followed by levamisole as compared with non-treated control animals or those receiving cyclophosphamide or levamisole alone. In vitro T-cell mitogen reactivity was inversely correlated with the final DNA antibody titres of individual mice, suggesting a relationship between decreased autoantibody production and augmented cellular immunity. We discuss possible mechanisms by which levamisole may delay the reappearance of autoantibodies and decrease the histological evidence of lupus nephritis when given to New Zealand mice first treated with cyclophosphamide.
The author discusses the use of the psychiatric audit system developed by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals in conducting retrospective reviews of various aspects of patient care. Treatment or procedures reflected in the medical record are measured against standards or criteria set by an audit committee. Analysis of exceptions to or variations from the criteria points up deficiencies and areas for corrective action. The author describes an audit of patients placed on the self-injury precaution program at his hospital, the deficiences that were identified, and the results of a repeat audit made several months later to see if the deficiencies had been corrected.
A 12,000 dalton serum amyloid A protein (SAA) has been isolated by chromatography on Sephadex in 10% formic acid. It is similar immunologically to the previously characterized 8500 dalton tissue amyloid A (AA) protein. The results of amino acid analyses, peptide maps, and the identity of the first 11 residues of the SAA and AA proteins support the idea that AA represents the amino terminal fragment of SAA and is derived from it by proteolysis.

Biologic acceptance is one of several criteria that must be met by an endodontic filling material. The purpose fo this experiment was to compare a new filling material consisting of a synthetic gutta-percha with a standard material consisting of natural gutta-percha. Each sample, being an endodontic point, contained a quantity of fillers. The materials were implanted subcutaneously in male white rats. The histologic appearance was essentially identical for both materials.
