Body image disturbance in anorexia nervosa during the acute and recuperative phase.

Perception of body size, subjective experience of body image distortions and differentiation of body concept in the human figure drawing were assessed in adolescent anorexia nervosa patients and controls shortly after hospital admission, and again 6 months later during the recuperative phase. Size estimation was not found to be a distinguishing variable, as both groups exhibited overestimation tendencies of comparable magnitude at both time periods. By contrast, experiences denoting estrangement from the body, insensitivity to body sensations, and weakness of body boundaries were more prevalent in anorexics, and persisted at high levels after frank symptoms of weight and eating disorder had subsided. Anorexics were also shown to depict the human figure with less differentiation relative to controls. Within the anorexic sample the presence of vomiting was linked to greater subjective experience of body image distortion, and such phenomena appear to be a more enduring feature in this subgroup. Overall, the results were viewed as lending support to the argument that defects in body image formation render the anorexic vulnerable to their manifest pathology, which is itself activated by maturational conflicts unique to adolescence.

Electroencephalographic change in Parkinsonian patients treated with levodopa-carbidopa.

Our findings in a relatively small series of cases seem to confirm a lack of statistically significant EEG changes when Carbidopa is combined with Levodopa in the therapy of patients with Parkinson's disease. There appears to be a slight increase in basic background frequency which was one of the earlier findings when Levodopa was first used clinically. From the literature surveyed there appears to be a definite lack of consistency in the effects of Levodopa therapy on the electroencephalogram and on the clinical status of the patients followed. We think this well may be explainable by the fact that no large study has been accomplished in which a neuroanatomical (pathological) correlation has been done with both the clinical and the EEG data. Neurological examination and the electroencephalogram are both clinical tools and have yet to be closely reviewed with the added parameter of neuro-pathologic investigation in this new day of therapy for Parkinson's disease.

Inhibition of thiabendazole metabolism in the rat.

1. A single oral dose of desmethylimipramine (80 mg/kg) administered to rats inhibited the hepatic microsomal hydroxylation of thiabendazole (45%), aniline (30%), biphenyl (30%) and ethylmorphine (15%) in vitro at 5 h after dosage; there was no decrease in cytochrome P-450 or b5. 2. A single oral dose of ethoxyquin (200 mg/kg) to rats inhibited the hepatic microsomal hydroxylation of thiabendazole (65%), aniline (40%) and biphenyl (40%) in vitro at 1 h after dosage; inhibition was less at 5 h. There were no changes in the contents of cytochromes P-450 and b5. 3. The max. plasma concn. of thiabendazole occurred 2--4 h after oral dosing (50--200 mg/kg) to rats. Thiabendazole (100 mg/kg) administered orally 30 min after oral ethoxyquin (400 mg/kg) or thiabendazole (200 mg/kg) administered orally 30 min after oral desmethylimipramine (80 mg/kg) delayed absorption of the thiabendazole and resulted in markedly markedly decreased plasma concentration of the anthelmintic. 4. Simultaneous administration of ethoxyquin (300 mg/kg) potentiated the anthelmintic effect of thiabendazole (750 mg/kg) on the helminth parasite, Nematospiroides dubius, in the mouse. Desmethylimipramine showed no similar potentiation.

A micromethod for separation and identification of digestive enzymes in brush border membrane fragments of single human intestinal biopsies.

A micromethod for the isolation of brush border membrane fragments from single peroral duodenal biopsies, and their subsequent analysis by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis is described. The quantity of biopsy material used varied between 5 and 15 mg wet weight, leaving enough mucosa for histological examination. By cutting the gels longitudinally into two halves it was possible to identify several maltases, sucrase, isomaltase and lactase and to correlate these enzymatic activities with distinct co-migrating protein peaks. For alkaline phosphatase and enterokinase this correlation was not possible. This method is suitable for the study on single biopsies of the molecular alterations occurring in the various congenital enzyme deficiencies of the human small intestine.

The attitude of the food industry.

The food industry necessarily provides what the nation will eat. Whilst taking care to meet all the standards laid down, the industry has to follow fashion rather than to dictate it. It welcomes advice from the medical profession but much advice has been slow to come. In this spirit of co-operation the food industry accepts its role to feed the nation and does so with responsibility for health and hygiene.

Alcohol use in the opiate use cycle of the heroin addict.

Ninety-six methadone maintained patients selected at random from a private clinic were interviewed to explore lifetime patterns of alcohol use in relation to opiate use. The results indicated that most addicts who ever drank excessively (in alcoholic, problem, or heavy patterns) did so primarily during two periods: prior to becoming addicted to narcotics and during periods of voluntary abstinence from narcotics. Further, most of the addicts who were drinking in excessive patterns while maintained on methadone had pretreatment histories of similar alcohol use.

Hemiatrophy of the tongue: a rare complication of the hemiplegic migraine.

A rare case of a patient with complicated migraine is presented. The patient had hemiatrophy of the tongue as a residual of a migraine episode. This cleared after several months. The paper goes on to trace the history of complicated migraine and the rather unusual complication of hemiatrophy of the tongue.

Physician-induced demand for medical care.

This paper addresses the theoretical models designed to ascertain the existence of a variable level of physicians' activity in shifting the demand of their patients. Two basic approaches are followed: equilibrium models of the demand for health care, and disequilibrium models. Within the former category, both competitive and monopolistic behavior are studied. Using the monopolistic model, a statistical test of the hypothesis of "no induced demand" is constructed, and fails to reject it. The disequilibrium analysis of other writers is analyzed and alternative specifications of such a model are set out.

Molecular exclusion electrophoresis of human serum lipoproteins: patterns in control and ischaemic heart-disease populations.

1. Electrophoresis of pre-stained lipoproteins on acrylamide-gel gradients has been carried out on serum from populations of control subjects and patients with ischaemic heart disease. The technique resolves components intermediate in position and, by inference, in size, between very-low-density and low-density lipoproteins. 2. These central band components were found in 37% of a control population but the incidence varied with age and sex, being lowest in young males and highest in elderly males. 3. The incidence of central band components in patients with ischaemic heart disease was 64% (males) and 71% (females), and the difference between these figures and those for matched control subjects was highly significant. The intensity of central band components in the group with ischaemic heart disease was significantly greater than in the control group. 4. The presence and intensity of central bands show positive correlation with serum cholesterol and triglyceride values, but many patients showing the phenomenon have normal lipid values. Of patients with ischaemic heart disease 31% showed central band components and had normal lipid values.

Black Thematic Apperception Test stimulus material.

A factorial design was used to test variations of the TAT based on racial characteristics. The subjects consisted of 135 black Southern males divided into three test groups of 45 subjects each. The M-TAT, T-TAT, or an experimental version of the TAT for blacks was group administered to each test group of 45 subjects. Each of the three test groups were further divided into three age groups of 15 subjects each designated as residents, college students or high school students. Subjects' responses to the racial characteristics and needs content across tests and age groups were examined. The data revealed: (a) subjects could distinguish the racial characteristics of black and white TAT material, (b) subjects indicated that black TAT material facilitated the writing of their stories, (c) subjects viewed the black TAT characters as more like "people in general," (d) both figure and background stimuli are important to subjects, and (e) content differences on need for achievement was found between age groups.

Alcohol and opiate dependence; a review.

The literature pertaining to alcohol use among opiate addicts is reviewed. Among the issues presented are the medical hazards, history and prevalence, etiology and treatment responsiveness of excessive drinkers in the opiate-dependent population. The possible biological relationship of alcohol and narcotic use to affective disorder is discussed.

Lipoprotein pre-staining: comparison of nitroblue tetrazolium and Sudan Black B.

Nitroblue tetrazolium and Sudan Black B have been compared as pre-staining agents for human serum lipoproteins, using acrylamide gel gradients. Results from Nitroblue tetrazolium staining should be used with caution for low and very low density lipoproteins, and further work appears necessary on the reaction with alpha-lipoproteins.
