Theories regarding endocrine contributions to the onset of labor.

A review of the literature on endocrine factors influencing labor is presented. Treated separately are oxytocin, the prostaglandins, the fetus, and estrogen/progesterone. Implications for nursing practice and theory are discussed where appropriate, and the reader is encouraged to think of parturition as a complex interplay of factors.

A conceptual framework of bonding.

Nurses involved in maternal-infant child care should objectively analyze any tools that purport to measure attachment and/or bonding. Has the author adequately defined the terms? Are directions given for making concepts operational for the practicing nurse? What are the foundations for placing values on parental behaviors? Do deviant parental behaviors reflect poor attachment or bonding, or are such behaviors merely indicative of limited parental opportunities for acquaintance? The presentation of of any conceptual framework should not be considered complete without empirical testing. Such testing and peer critique of a framework are essential fro any theory of bonding to evolve. With further research into the parental-child relationship, nurses can learn to provide adequate care for facilitating the bonding process in families.

[Myocardiopathy and Takayasu's disease. Apropos of a case].

The possibility of cardiac involvement in Takayasu's disease is well known, but this involvement generally appears to be secondary to reno-vascular hypertension or to pulmonary arteritis and, exceptionally, as a result of coronary disease. In the case reported here, the inflammatory myocardial lesion localised to the left ventricle was demonstrated while the patient was still alive. It was responsible for an episode of severe heart failure which finally resolved after 2 years. The inflammatory involvement of the myocardium was associated with laboratory signs of inflammation and with inflammatory arterial lesions. Several haemodynamic investigations were performed to follow the course of the disease. The diagnosis was confirmed by myocardial biopsies and by the pulmonary arterial and renal arterial involvement. A review of the literature revealed that this condition was extremely rare and has only been proven in a few autopsy cases.
