Evaluation of skin temperature biofeedback training at two different sites for migraine.

All combinations of cooling versus warming and finger versus temporal artery were used in the present study, the aim of which was to identify an optimal biofeedback training site and to assess the specific effects of skin temperature biofeedback upon migraine. After an initial 4-week baseline phase, during which daily records of headache activity and medication were kept, 24 migraine patients were randomly assigned to one of the four experimental conditions. Training sessions for all patients were of 50-min duration and occurred once per week for 8 weeks. The headache charts were completed for another 4 weeks after treatment was terminated and again at 6-month follow-up. The results showed significant reductions in migraine activity and drug usage. However, self-regulation of skin temperature in different directions at different sites did not in fact result in significantly different magnitudes of change in migraine activity across groups. The role of nonspecific factors is discussed and a physiological model is proposed to explain how warming and cooling may produce clinical improvement in migraine.

Operant management of the behavioural sequelae of Wilson's disease: a case report.

An approach to the management of the behavioural manifestations of Wilson's Disease by operant technique is outlined. There was considerable improvement in the patient's ability to perform autonomously on this program. When the contingencies were changed the patient's behaviour deteriorated markedly, thereby suggesting that improvement in behaviour was not due to medication alone.

[The course of hydatidiform moles, followed by the radio-immunological estimation of choriogonadotrophin (author's transl)].

The evolution of 50 hydatidiform moles was followed through repeated radioimmunoassays of choriogonadotropin (hCG), either in urine or plasma. In 37 cases a spontaneous regular decrease was observed, but it generally slowed down after the first week. In fact, only 30% of the total number of moles examined cleared up spontaneously within a month and 54% within 8 weeks. In 12 cases a diagnosis of retention of trophoblastic tissue was made: three times during the first month of evolution on the basis of a stagnation of the decreasing curve. In the 9 cases without radioimmunoassay of hCG between the 10th and 40th days after evacuation, the diagnosis was not made until after two months. The specific assay of hCG with an anti beta-hCG antiserum enables the resolution of diagnostic problems raised by the cross-reaction of hypopituitary LH when using the classic antiserum and particularly the differential diagnosis between the retention of trophoblastic tissue and a beginning pregnancy immediately following a mole, or a high level of LH after castration.

Leukocyte mean corpuscular volume in the differential diagnosis of acute leukemias.

The leukocyte mean corpuscular volume was measured in 61 cases of acute leukemia. The volume of blast cells allows a clear distinction between lymphoblastic and other varieties of acute leukemia. There seems to be good correlation between patients' age, leukocyte corpuscular volume, cytological and cytochemical findings. Furthermore, myeloblastic leukemias.Leukemic cells can be characterized by their volume, which is close to that of normal cells of the same line. This observation supports the clonal theory of their origin and concurs with the classical nomenclature which separates them into lymphoblastic, myeloblastic and monoblastic types.
