We describe a method for controlled exchange of aqueous humor and sodium hyaluronate (Healon) before the eye is opened for intraocular surgery in the anterior segment. This provides Healon's tissue protecting and space maintaining effects during the complete surgical procedure.
We present a survey of our current investigations on lens and corneal tissue. Using scanning electron microscope techniques, we have studied lens fiber organization, lens capsule and subcapsular epithelium, the effect of Nd:YAG laser treatment on the lens, the endothelial effects of a relatively traumatic introduction of an intraocular lens, with and without sodium hyaluronate (Healon) pretreatment, and the epithelial reaction to foldings in Descemet's membrane (Descemet's folds).

Description of the surgical technique of artificial lens implantations extra- and intracapsularly. Only the original Medallion -lens for flexible suture fixation and the "slotted" Medallion - lens for steel suture fixation will be described with brief mention of Platina clip lens for extra-capsular surgery, the Small incision lens, the Three loop lens and the Boomerang lens.
