In an era of change in health-care delivery and, particularly, change in patient care, leadership is the cornerstone of change management. The environment of the 1990s will challenge even the most sophisticated and capable health-care executives. This paper discusses key aspects of leadership and models them to the patient-care setting. Leadership will be the differentiating factor as organizations seek competitive advantage.

Implementing a quality improvement program.

Implementing a Quality Improvement Program (QIP) is a high priority matter for most health care organizations. Implementation requires the commitment of top management, measurement tools, statistical tools, problem-solving tools, and training for all levels of employees. This article describes the need for managing costs and quality, quality improvement concepts, examples of problem-solving tools, and the role of the facilitator in the QIP process.
