Influence of sodium bicarbonate on growth and health of young calves.

Fifty-four Holstein and Jersey calves were assigned at 4 days of age within breed and sex to one of four treatments: control consisting of colostrum, milk replacer, and starter; buffered colostrum and replacer (.6% sodium bicarbonate) and starter (2% sodium bicarbonate); acidified colostrum (1% propionic), untreated replacer, and starter; and acidified, buffered colostrum (1% propionic, .6% sodium bicarbonate), buffered replacer (.6% sodium bicarbonate), and starter (2% sodium bicarbonate). The feeding regimen was colostrum once daily, day 4 to 14; milk replacer once daily, day 15 to 28; and calf starter ad libitum, day 4 to 84. Bull calves were fed for 42 days and heifers for 84 days. Calves fed acidified colostrum refused more feed and were less efficient from day 4 to 14 than calves fed buffered colostrum. Bulls were more sensitive to acidified colostrum than heifers. Starter intake, total dry matter intake, and average daily gains were similar for all calves during days 4 to 84. Rumen fluid from calves fed diets with sodium bicarbonate was higher in acetate and lower in propionate and lactate than that from calves fed diets without sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate improved intake of acidified colostrum during the first 2 or 3 days of feeding but had no other effect on gain or feed intake.

Endothelial morphology in long-term keratoconus corneal transplants.

Endothelial morphology was studied in 55 long-term keratoconus grafts. Photographs were taken with a Zeiss non-contact endothelial lens and analyzed with a Zeiss MOP-3 digital analyzer. Donor ages were known in 39 cases. Statistical analysis was carried out correlating endothelial cell count with several parameters, including recipient age and cell form as expressed by the coefficient of variation. Cell counts varied from 502 to 1708 cells/mm2. No correlation between cell counts and donor age was found. Recipient age had an unexpected significance as a predictor of endothelial cell survival in that cell counts decreased as recipient age increased despite donor age. As the grafts aged, more cell pleomorphism was found as expressed by the coefficient of variation.

Personal disruptions, social integration, subjective well-being, and predisposition toward the use of counseling services.

The importance of social integration for the subjective well-being and predisposition toward professional counseling services of persons experiencing personal disruptions is explored among 1,423 northwest Wisconsin residents. Considerable support is found for the hypothesis that greater contact with close friends diminishes the effect of personal disruptions (health problems, marital break-up, and unemployment) on individual well-being. Some evidence is found in favor of the proposition that greater contact with close friends for those with disruptions reduces the inclination to use professional counselors. And, unexpectedly, the frequency of interaction with friends for those without stressful events is not found to significantly influence the level of morale. Friendship ties and counseling services are suggested as alternative resources for persons in crisis, and the relevance of findings on social integration, personal disruptions, and morale for models of subjective well-being is discussed.

Spindle cell lipoma of the orbit.

A 42-year-old woman had an orbital mass lesion removed surgically that proved histologically to be a spindle cell lipoma. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a spindle cell lipoma arising in the orbit. This specific type of lipoma occurs chiefly in male patients and is believed to affect the shoulder and posterior neck regions almost exclusively. Spindle cell lipomas, while having unusual features histologically, are benign and should not be mistaken for liposarcomas or other spindle cell soft-tissue tumors.

Perceived health, HIV illness, and mental distress in African-American clients of AIDS counseling centers.

The development of effective coping strategies may require that adults with HIV disease have an accurate, and to the extent possible, positive perception of their own health status. This has been found to be lacking among HIV-infected people with limited education/information, including many minority adults. The objective of this study was to test several hypotheses that predict depression and perceived health in African-American adults with HIV disease. Data were obtained from 255 HIV-infected black adults (age > 18) who sought support, counseling, and maintenance services from one of three HIV care and referral centers in the Mid-South. The results emphasized that perceived health status may fulfill a psychological distress moderating or distress-aggravating function for persons with HIV/AIDS.

Candida albicans transmission by penetrating keratoplasty.

Transmission by microbial infection from donor to host during penetrating keratoplasty is of continuing concern to corneal transplant surgeons. Eye banks routinely use antibiotic and/or antiseptic solutions to pretreat donor eyes used for transplantation, but specific antifungal agents are not given. We report a case of Candida albicans endophthalmitis that occurred after using a donor eye found to have Candida positive cultures.

Stage of illness, level of HIV symptoms, sense of coherence and psychological functioning in clients of community-based AIDS counseling centers.

The psychological functioning of HIV-infected individuals in community populations has taken on new meaning and urgency for healthcare policymakers responding to the special challenges of the AIDS epidemic. The authors' objective is to test several hypotheses that predict depression and anxiety in adults infected with HIV. Data were obtained from 156 HIV-infected adults (age > or = 18) who sought support, counseling, and maintenance services from one of three HIV care and referral centers in the Mid-South. The results of the study emphasize the relative importance of perceived physical symptoms over stage of illness for psychological functioning among adults with HIV.
