Premature parturition was successfully induced with a preparation containing 2 dexamethasone esters in 709 out of 716 cows and heifers of gestational periods ranging from 3 to 8 months. A mortality rate of 38.5% was experienced among calves produced by induced cows, while only a 2.7% mortality rate occurred among 4,330 calves from normal parturitions. Approximately 50% of all treated cattle retained foetal membranes, but with apparently no ill-effect. The treatment apparently did not affect milk production, post-calving fertility, and the overall incidence of dystocias in cows and post-calving diseases. Three deaths occurred among induced cattle, but they could not be attributed to the treatment. It was concluded that the technique may prove to be of great value in dairy cattle, in seasonal milking areas.

1. The metabolism of debrisoquine sulphate in the dog has been studied and is similar to that in rat and man. 2. Two acidic urinary metabolites, shown to be present in rat, dog and man, have been isolated from rat urine. After derivatization they were characterized by n.m.r. and mass spectroscopy as methyl 2-[2-(4,6-dimethylpyrimidylamino)-methyl]-phenylacetate and 2-[2-(4,6-dimethylpyrimidylamino)-ethyl]benzoate.
The pharmacological activities of a racemic mixture of tetrahydroisoquinolyl derivatives of 3,4-dimethylbenzyl acetate, (+/-) Ro 03-4661 and the corresponding resolved isomers (+) Ro 03-4661 and (--) Ro 03-4661 have been studied in rat and rhesus monkey. The racemate and the (--) isomer showed narcotic analgesic activity by the oral route in both species. Drug metabolism studies indicated that the activity was probably due to metabolic Deacetylation to the corresponding carbinol Ro 03-4632. deacetylation did not occur in the dog, but was observed in the rat and rhesus monkey. In both these species the hydrolysis was more extensive after oral than parenteral administration. In vitro studies also showed considerable species variation in the ability of blood and tissue esterases to hydrolyse the different stereochemical isomers.

A case of lymphosarcoma involving some cranial nerves in a cat is described. Clinical diagnosis of the condition was complicated by a concurrent bilateral otitis media; however, at autopsy it was determined that the signs seen were a direct result of the involvement of 6 cranial nerves, and the anterior cervical ganglion, by the neoplasm.

The neurological deficit and plasma concentrations of levodopa have been studied in a Parkinsonian patient experiencing "on-off" phenomena. Blind evaluations of transient attacks of dysphonia revealed an association between episodes of neurological deterioration and exceptionally high plasma concentrations of levodopa shortly after ingestion. These results indicate that "on-off" phenomena can be toxic reactions to levodopa rather than deteriorations due to inadequate intake or absorption of the drug. Management of patients subject to such attacks should be aimed at minimizing fluctuations in the serum level of the drug.
