Capnocytophaga species are gram-negative rods which may cause disease in both non-immunocompromised and immunocompromised hosts. We describe a case of endocarditis due to Capnocytophaga ochracea in a non-immunocompromised patient with a decrease of blood CD4/CD8 ratio and lymphocyte proliferative response to ConA during infection. In vitro experiments showed that C. ochracea decreased lymphocyte proliferation to mitogens (ConA, PHA), cell surface CD4 antigen and IL2 receptor expression on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from normal volunteers.

The morphology of 6 bacteriophages isolated from Staphylococcus saprophyticus was studied by electron microscopy. Phages had isometric heads and non-contractile tails, thus belonging to the Siphoviridae family. They were subdivided into two morphological groups based on head diameter and tail length. Type I, represented by phages 1154A and 1405, and characterized by an unusually small capsid, may be a new species.
The computer system of the Bacteriology Laboratory at the Hôpital Cardiologique in Lyon is one of the elements in the computer management of patient data. It dovetails in with the various units for admission, patient location, ward surveillance, outpatient appointments. The main objectives are as follows: to improve quality of sample information, to reduce clerical work and accelerate information circulation, to widen the scope of epidemiological research. Computers can register samples, edit laboratory work sheets, entry lists, record results, generate reports, give a visual listing of all analyses performed before a patient leaves hospital, list pending analytical results, make available in the total system all laboratory-validated information, produce automatic billing of analyses and statistical editing. The Bacteriology Laboratory has three visual display units and two printers at its disposal. Computer laboratory management has been operational since May 1977. First results are satisfactory and suggest extension of the system to other laboratories and handling of quality control.

Using two techniques (agglutination and immunoprecipitation), the authors have observed that: -Pillet's strain CK9 and Oeding's strains 670 and 17A are very similar; -antigen 9 is also present in the three strains; the same relation is found in wild strains. Using agglutination and immunoprecipitation, there is a cross reactivity between h1 factor serum, serum 9 and strains CK9, 670 and 17A. A precipitation line involving strain CK9 and serum CK9 is described in the Pillet system. Finally, there is a strong presumption that Oeding's h1 antigen and Pillet's antigen 9 are identical.
61 adult patients (36 men, 25 women), with coronary or valvular diseases, operated with extra-corporeal circulation, by the same surgical team, have been investigated for the plasmatic levels of total complement, fractions C4, C3 activator, C3, immunoglobulins G, A and M, for the phagocytic and bactericidal activity of polymorphonuclear leucocytes. 50 healthy adults (26 men, 24 women) have been tested as controls. Results have been statistically analyzed. Two experiments have also been performed: extra-corporeal circulation machine has run alone without a patient, and the examinations of blood samples in the machine have been performed before and at the end of the running time. Just at the end of extra-corporeal circulation, a deep and significant falling of globulins (complement and its fractions, immunoglobulins) is observed, which lasts during two days; at the 8th and 15th days after the operation, a significant and important raising of these globulins is noted. It has been demonstrated that the initial falling is not correlated with the hemodilution, but is relevant to a consumption in the machine and in the tissues. Any significant variation in polymorphonuclear leucocytes activity has not been noted, but there are strong individual variations. Importance of humoral abnormalities observed is discussed, regarding to the infectious prophylaxis in cardiac surgery.
