[Biopsy of para-aortic lymphnodes in patients with malignant lymphomas (author's transl)].

In treatment of malignant lymphomas exploratory laparotomy with splenectomy, liver and lymphnodes biopsy is necessary in order to individualize appropriate management. The surgeon must make maximal effort to obtain lymphnodes for histological examination. The surgical anatomy of the retroperitoneum in space of abdominal aorta and the biopsy procedure of paraaortic lymphnodes were described. The literature was reviewed.

Ultrastructure of elastic fibers as shown by polarization optics after the topo-optical permanganate-bisulfite-toluidine blue (PBT) reaction.

Permanganate-bisulfite-toluidine blue (PBT) reaction proved to be a highly selective and sensitive method for demonstration of elastic structures in tissue sections. Permanganate oxidation liberates a great amount of aldehyde groups in young and adult elastic fibers both in bovine ligamentum nuchae which can be demonstrated with the bisulfite-toluidine blue (pH = 1.0) staining procedure. There are suggestive evidences that the aldehyde groups are liberated from the desmosine and isodesmosine cross bondings of elastin. The dichroism and the strong birefringence of the elastic fibers induced by the PBT reaction indicate a high degree of linear fibrillar molecular order of the reacting elastin molecules which are assumed to be arranged helically in the aortic elastic fibers and they are assumed to show 2 different micellar textures in ligamentum nuchae fibers as reported with other topo-optical reactions earlier by Romhanyi.

[Therapy results in hairy cell leukemia].

20 patients with hairy cell leukemia were treated between 1966 and 1978. All modalities of treatment for lymphoproliferative disorders have been used in at least some patients. Besides prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide and their combinations as well as irradiation of enlarged spleens, cell depletion was achieved by splenectomy and leukapheresis. Cytostatics had no beneficial effect. Cytostatic therapy exposed some patients to the hazards of severe infections. On the contrary splenectomy lead to the improvement of some blood parameters. Leukapheresis seemed to work nearly identically. The survival of the splenectomized patients was longer than of controls. Because of the variability of the duration of the disease no definite statement could be made concerning the survival of both groups. 12 patients died during the observation period. Splenectomy was followed by one death, 11 patients died of septicemia.

Differences in the severity of disturbance of behaviors in children receiving inpatient and outpatient psychiatric treatment.

This study was conducted to determine if there are differences in the severity of disturbance of behaviors exhibited by children receiving inpatient psychiatric treatment and those receiving outpatient psychiatric treatment based on their parents' judgments of the frequency of occurrence of those behaviors. The same behaviors were found to exist in both treatment groups, but the severity of disturbance of those behaviors in the inpatient sample was significantly greater than in the outpatient sample. The scale used in this study was found to be a valid and useful instrument for predicting inpatient and outpatient status of children. Pratice and research implications of this study are also discussed.

The relationship between alcoholic patients' milieu perception and measures of their drinking during a brief follow-up period.

Patient perceptions of alcoholism treatment programs were assessed by the Ward Atmosphere Scale and the Community Oriented Program Environment Scale. Patient perceptions were related to drinking during a brief follow-up period. The Personal Problem Orientation, Anger and Aggression, and Program Clarity subscales were found to correlate more frequently with patient drinking. Patient perception of the treatment environment, as well as the actual treatment milieu, may be important aspects of the alcoholism treatment process.

Two types of epileptic cortical after-discharges evoked by the stimulation of the hippocampus and thalamic nuclei in rats.

Rhythmic cortical phenomena were evoked by stimulation of hippocampus and/or thalamus in rats. Electrical stimulation of thalamic nuclei (nc. ventralis dorsomedialis VDM and nc. lateralis anterior--LA) by single pulses elicited rhythmic after-discharge ("spindle") as a late component of the cortical response, whereas identical stimulation of hippocampus did not trigger such an activity. Rhythmic stimulation of thalamic nuclei elicited cortical incremental responses more often than stimulation of hippocampus. Epileptic self-sustained after-discharges (AD) occurred after the endo of rhythmic stimulation in 66% of hippocampal stimulations, in 35% of VDM stimulations and in 30% of LA stimulations. AD evoked by stimulation of the hippocampus (long duration discharges of slow serrated waves) differed characteristically from AD following stimulation of the VMD (short duration spike and wave complexes). Stimulation of the LA in half of the cases led to the "hippocampal" pattern of serrated wave after-discharges, in the remaining cases spike-and-wave complexes or a combined AD pattern was recorded.

Correlation of the macrogram and the microgram of the penicillin focus in turtle (Testudo) cerebral cortex. Localization of the capillary microelectrode tip with Pontamine Sky Blue 6BX.

Localization of the tip of the recording microelectrode with Pontamine Sky Blue 6BX introduced into the tissue iontophoretically was used to study the relationship of the morphological type of the neurone to a given type of elecrographic activity during the epileptic focal discharge. Paroxysmal depolarization shifts (PDSs) and short bursts of spikes in the negative phase of the focal discharge were found to be related to cells of the pyramidal type. Conversely, ovoid cells were active only in quiescent intervals and were inhibited throughout the whole duration of the focal discharge.

Effects of cholera toxin and guanosine 5'-[betagamma-imido]triphosphate on beta-adrenergic-receptor affinity.

A comparison was made of the effects of cholera toxin and p[NH]ppG on the binding affinity of beta-adrenergic receptors in toad erythrocyte membranes. This was determined by studying the ability of isoproterenol and propranolol to compete for the receptor with (-)-[3H]dihydroalprenolol. p[NH]ppG decreased the receptor affinity for the agonist isoproterenol (i.e. a 'right' shift in the displacement-concentration curve), but was without effect on the affinity for the antagonist propranolol. Toad erythrocyte membranes after treatment with cholera toxin exhibited increased receptor affinity for isoproterenol (i.e. a 'left' shift in the displacement curve), but did not affect the affinity for propranolol. p[NH[ppG was able to exert its right shift even in cholera-toxin treated membranes. The ability of cholera toxin to alter beta-adrenergic-receptor affinity is interpreted as further evidence that the toxin affects the nucleotide-regulatory component of adenylate cyclase. The regulatory component affected may be the catecholamine-sensitive guanosine triphosphatase.

The influence of GABA on discharges of cortical epileptogenic focus.

GABA, when applied locally, acted similarly on both primary and mirror cortical focus: the negative component of the spike discharge was suppressed or inverted in polarity, whereas the late slow negative wave was strongly potentiated. Recordings from deep cortical layers suggested a different origin of these 2 surface-negative components of focal discharges.
