Coliform septicemia and pulmonary disease associated with canine parvoviral enteritis: 88 cases (1987-1988).

Parvovirus infection was confirmed by fluorescent antibody staining or viral culturing in 137 (22%) of 615 necropsy accessions from dogs at the Missouri Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory from Jan 1, 1987 through Sept 30, 1988. Septicemic colibacillosis was diagnosed in 88 (90%) of the 98 canine parvovirus-positive accessions in which liver or lung was cultured bacteriologically. Pulmonary edema or alveolitis similar to that seen in the human adult respiratory distress syndrome was observed in 63 (69%) of the 91 canine parvovirus-positive accessions in which the lungs were examined histologically.

A Mr 43,000 epidermal growth factor-related protein purified from the urine of breast cancer patients.

A tumor-associated epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like activity was detected in the urine of breast cancer patients by means of an EGF radioreceptor assay and an anchorage-independent growth assay. The clonogenic growth factor activity of pooled void volume eluate fractions from a Bio-Gel P-30 column was completely neutralized by an anti-human epidermal growth factor antiserum but not by an anti-transforming growth factor alpha antiserum. This activity was determined in the urine of 71 breast cancer patients. A statistically significant correlation was found between EGF-like clonogenic activity and axillary lymph node status, tumor size, stage of disease, and grade of differentiation of the primary tumor. The Bio-Gel P-30 void volume fraction was used to purify the EGF-related polypeptide to apparent homogeneity by subsequent binding to and elution from A431 cells followed by isoelectric focusing. A polypeptide of a pI of approximately 3.4 was identified to be related to EGF by neutralization and immunoprecipitation experiments with anti-human epidermal growth factor antisera. This polypeptide migrated as a single band of Mr 43,000 in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

Neonatal sacrococcygeal teratoma: multiimaging modality assessment.

Neonatal sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is a rare and potentially malignant tumor. We report on four cases of neonatal SCT, in which ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were used preoperatively to accurately establish the extent of the tumor and its relationship to the surrounding anatomic structures. This approach facilitates complete surgical resection and optimal outcome.

Benign soft-tissue neoplasm simulating sarcoma of spermatic cord.

A large, painless, slow-growing mass arising in the scrotum of a twenty-three-year-old man, which proved to be benign myxoma, simulated a primary sarcoma of the spermatic cord. Only 1 case of myxoma involving the spermatic cord has been reported previously. It is extremely important that multiple microscopic sections of the specimen be examined carefully so that the proper tissue diagnosis can be made. A false diagnosis of malignancy may lead to treatment that is not indicated and that has a high morbidity.

Establishment of new human prostatic cancer cell line (JCA-1).

The establishment of a new human prostatic cancer cell line is described. This cell line was derived from a poorly to moderately differentiated prostatic adenocarcinoma. It has been maintained in tissue culture for fourteen months and has been passed fifty-two times. This cell line has an ability to form colonies in soft agar suspension cultures, and also is transplantable to nude mice. Tumors grown in nude mice revealed a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma with positive PSA staining. Acid phosphatase activity was detected in freeze-thawed cells by enzymatic assay. A karyotype analysis demonstrated aneuploidy with a model chromosomal number of 69 and six marker chromosomes.

[Radical approach in lumbar intervertebral disk operations].

A study of a postmortem preparation of a surgical model of lumbar discectomy serves as basis for discussing whether radical "clearing out" of the intervertebral space is at all possible or meaningful. The degree of radicality depends upon the extent of degeneration of the disc, involving a more or less extensive resection of the anulus fibrosus. The weak point of the operative procedure is mostly the dorsomediolateral area contralateral to the site of the approach.

Extradural implantation of sacral anterior root stimulators.

A technique for extradural deafferentation of the S2 to S5 segments and extradural implantation of stimulating electrodes is described, and its application to twelve patients with spinal cord lesions is reported. Nine patients use their implants for micturition, and seven are fully continent. The advantages and disadvantages of this technique compared with the more usual intrathecal procedure are discussed.

[Effect of chronic inhaled pollutants (cigarette smoke) on trans-epithelial measured potential difference of nasal mucosa in the human].

The transepithelial potential difference of the mucosa of the nose is appreciably higher in non-smokers than in smokers with a moderate to heavy cigarette consumption. This reduced potential difference in response to chronic inhalation to noxae (cigarette smoke) is a marker for the change in the integrity of the mucosa of the nose, and may possibly be considered to be representative of the rest of the respiratory epithelium of the bronchial system.

Lectin histochemical characterization of the mouse, rat and human lymphoid tissues.

The authors performed a comparative lectin histochemical study on lymphoid organs of three species with 12 different lectins. The T and B cell regions and the accessory cells of lymphoid tissues were studied. The species differences show that the BALB/c mouse can be a valuable tool in modelling human lymphoid tissues, whereas Wistar rats exhibit great differences in lectin binding patterns as compared with human tissues. The positivity of peanut agglutinin binding of cortical and the negativity of medullar thymocytes in mice can be regarded as an indicator of cell differentiation. The focal distribution of peanut agglutinin positivity in the centrocytic region of human and rat germinal centres marks a small B cell subpopulation at the early stage of differentiation, while Bandeira simplicifolia binding is characteristic of a broader B cell lineage, but only in rats and mice. Canavalia ensiformis lectin seems to be a reliable marker of accessory cells (dendritic and interdigitating reticulum cells as well as macrophages) in all species studied.

Low body weight and weight loss in the aged.

Low body weight and rapid unintentional weight loss are highly predictive of mortality and morbidity in the elderly population. Weight loss is frequently reported in elderly patients. Acute and chronic diseases are leading causes of involuntary weight loss. Whereas physical disease probably accounts for a majority of cases of involuntary weight loss, psychiatric disorders such as dementia and depression also may result in severe nutritional deficiencies. Additional physiological, psychological, and social factors may affect food intake and body weight. Changes in body composition include loss of height and lean body mass and lower basal metabolic rate. Energy requirements decrease because of the lower basal metabolic rate and reduced physical activity. These low energy requirements make it more difficult for the elderly to obtain adequate amounts of required nutrients. Food intake regulation, taste, and olfactory sensitivity may be altered. As 50% of Americans have lost all of their teeth by age 65, chewing problems are often present. Other factors that contribute to poor nutritional status include alterations in the gastrointestinal tract, functional disabilities, lowered socioeconomic status, and social isolation. Finally, because of the increase in both physical and psychiatric disease, the elderly are major users of prescription drugs. Drug/nutrient interactions can result in anorexia and weight loss. The findings indicate that factors causing unintentional weight loss are highly interrelated and difficult to separate. Health care professionals must monitor body weight in elderly persons and carefully evaluate any cases of rapid, unintentional weight loss to prevent further deterioration of health status.

[New technics for producing inhalation aerosols--initial experiences and results with the piezoelectric inhalation device].

In the treatment of chronic obstructive airway diseases, the inhalative application of medicaments with a bronchodilatory effect is given preference throughout the world. In addition to inhalation solutions and powder capsules, so-called metered-dose aerosols have formed an established part of the treatment plan for approximately 30 years now. With the piezoelectric inhalation device, a fully portable ultrasonic atomiser that is small enough to fit within the pocket, has been developed for the first time. In this device, the piezoelectric effect is utilised to produced, pressure-free, microfine aerosols. Within it, an accurately metered volume containing the therapeutic dose is applied to an atomising element oscillating in the ultrasonic range. The particle spectrum generated with the piezo-system corresponds, in terms of size, to that of metered aerosol devices, and the mean particle diameter is approximately 2.1 microns. The atomisation process takes approximately one second.

[Does the initial hemoglobin value modify the primary tumor reaction? A study of 264 irradiated bronchial cancers].

In a retrospective investigation the remission rate was determined in roentgen picture for 264 male patients with bronchogenic carcinoma after intensive radiotherapy (target dose 56 Gy). Classification of roentgenologic remission was done in 3 groups (complete, partial, minimal/no remission). For each patient the pretherapeutic haemoglobin value was taken from casebook and clinical relevant limit concentrations for an anaemia were correlated with the classified remissions. The difference of regression frequency between complete and partial remission always can be secured statistically irrespectively of chosen limit, that is the anaemia has a provable influence on roentgenologic tumor reaction. To prove that the tumor value as a third variable is not responsible for that a covariant analysis was done. According to that the corrected mean haemoglobin values were 8.9 mmol/l for complete, 8.1 mmol/l for partial and 7.7 mmol/l for minimal/no remission. These differences of the mean values are significant in Newman-Keuls-test, the relation between initial haemoglobin value and remission type is provable independently of tumor volume. Also for bronchogenic carcinoma with that a dependence could be shown between haemoglobin concentration--and by this the oxygen supply of the tumor--and the reaction of the primary tumor after radiotherapy. From this we deduce the recommendation to treat anaemia before beginning of radiotherapy or to irradiate anaemic patients applying an effective sensitizer.

[The use of 60Co-gamma ray-sterilized calf serum in cell culture].

The use of 60Co-gamma-radiation-sterilised calf sera in cell culturing is reported in this paper. Evidence was produced to the effect that 60Co-gamma-irradiation, using a dosage of 3 kGy and a dose rate of 8 kGy/h, of fetal calf serum, neonatal calf serum, and calf serum did not substantially alter the growth-stimulating properties of those sera during 42-day tests. With almost all cell lines and sera used, for all practical purposes, they were identical with the properties of control sera. The following cell lines were used in the experimental programme: one human mammary tumor, MaTu, one human embryonic cell line--E VI, one bat lung cell line--Tb1-Lu, and one human rhabdomyosarcoma--A 204. Growth stimulation was twelve percent below the control value only with Tb1-Lu on Eagle-MEM culturing medium with 3-kGy-irradiation of neonatal calf serum. On the other hand, cell growth was stimulated by 28 percent in A 204 on RPMI 1640 culturing medium, again with 3-kGy-irradiation of neonatal calf serum. Loss of activity by up to 30 percent, depending on the serum used, must be expected from irradiation doses of 10 kGy and 20 kGy which are capable of causing drastic reduction or even complete elimination of serum-borne microorganisms (Bender et al., 1989). Sera irradiated that way would be only conditionally applicable, when it comes to highly vulnerable cell strains.

[Chemical and thermal compatibility of all-ceramic systems].

The chemical and thermal compatibility of the all-ceramic systems Vitadur-N, Hi-Ceram and In-Ceram as well as the combinations of Dicor with Vitadur-N, Dicor with NBK 1000 and Dicor with Vivodent, respectively, were investigated by means of electronmicroscopy and microprobe measurements at the interface of each compound, and thermomechanical analyses of the components were performed. The results show good contact at the interface of all combinations investigated. No evidence was found for diffusion at the interface except in the In-Ceram system, were a migration of K+ from Vitadur-N dentine into the glassy phase of In-Ceram occurs. The thermomechanical analyses showed a good thermal compatibility of all compounds investigated.

[Effect of a stay in the North Sea climate on lymphocyte subpopulations in the peripheral blood of patients with exogenous allergic bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis].

This study investigated the influence of a three-week sojourn on the island of Norderney on the lymphocyte subpopulations in the peripheral blood of patients with exogenous allergic bronchial asthma. For this purpose, we examined 25 patients at the start of their sojourn at our clinic, and again three weeks later. Patients with chronic bronchitis served as a control group. During the three-week stay, a clinical improvement in obstructive ventilation disturbances was observed. After 21 days, the patients with bronchial asthma showed a significant increase in the OKT8 suppressor cells (22.5-26.6%), and a significant decrease in helper/suppressor ratio (2.7-2.1). In patients with chronic bronchitis, no changes in the T lymphocyte subpopulations were to be found. The difference in the immunological status between the two disease categories present at the start of the study was, therefore, eradicated by a specific and unspecific therapy.
